At the outset, Fonda’s early stardom is situated in relation to contemporaneous moral and political ideologies in the United States and how she functioned as both an agent and symbol of these ideologies. Her anti-war activism in the early-1970s constituted the apex of Fonda’s radicalisation and the nadir of her popular appeal; a central question of this thesis, therefore, is how her stardom was rehabilitated for the American mainstream to the point of becoming Hollywood’s most bankable actress. As the star and producer of IPC Films, Fonda developed political projects using commercial formats, namely Coming Home (1978), The China Syndrome (1979), Nine to Five (1980), and Rollover (1981).

Though ostensibly created to compete with Cadillacʹs Series 62 convertible, the Buick Skylark served more as a flagship, what today we would call a halo product. And a shiny halo it was. Perfectly restored models have sold for $250,000. WHERE DOES THE 1954 BUICK SKYLARK FIT IN? For 1954, the Skylark was the “luxury sports car” built on the Buick Century platform. The 1953 version had been built on the Roadmaster platform. Copyright © 2014 William Horton, William Horton Photography. In fact, it wasnʹt approved or even reviewed by a committee. The Buick Skylark—from conception to productionCrelied more on executive fiat than focus groups. Prototype The Skylark project was initiated by Buick General Manager Ivan Wiles, who liked a customized 1951 roadster created by Styling Chief Ned Nickles. A prototype did the car‐show circuit starting in the summer of 1952.

Carole-Anne Tyler helped me greatly by discussing gender and queer theory with me. Josh Pearson read drafts of chapters and gave me invaluable advice. I was able to work out chapters by presenting them at the annual conference of the Science Fiction Research Association, and I am grateful to the members of the organization for being so welcoming. I owe Erika Anderson undying gratitude for meticulously aiding me in research and proofreading the entire project. iv ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Omega Men The Masculinist Discourse of Apocalyptic Manhood in Postwar American Cinema by Ezekiel Crago Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in English University of California, Riverside, June 2019 Dr. Sherryl Vint, Co-Chairperson Dr. Derek Burrill, Co-Chairperson This study investigates anxieties over the role of white masculinity in American society after World War Two articulated in speculative films of the post-apocalypse.
