Manifest Destiny and the Environmental Impacts of Westward Expansion

By the 1840s this idea of the United States extending its boundaries was encompassed by the phrase Manifest Destiny. Americans not only considered Westward expansion a desirable objective but an endowment from God through which they could take their democratic republicanism across North America. The purpose of this article is to explore American interpretations of Manifest Destiny in the 1840s and 1850s and its environmental impacts on the Western territories, specifically the role which democratic society, Christianity, and capitalism played in transforming the land, nature, and relationships with Native peoples. Bertonneau Published online: 13 October 2010 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Popular culture courses first appeared in the college and university curriculum in social science and humanities departments in the late 1950s in response to the Frankfurt School critique of the postwar bourgeois order. The Frankfurt School critics, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, Hannah Arendt, Max Horkheimer, and Theodor W. Adorno, were in turn responding to Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin. As a discipline, “popular culture studies” (shortened in recent years to “culture studies”) began as a disestablishmentarian enterprise pursued by activist intellectuals of left-liberal disposition. The names of Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams are important as successors to the Frankfurt School figures and as contemporary cue-givers of the discipline. The scholar-radicals typically construed nineteenth-century civic custom—and even more so, twentieth-century bourgeois culture—as ideology, using the term in its Marxist sense as the expression of a false and freedom-limiting conscious- ness that impedes progress. In English departments and other departments where the study of literature was in order, interest in genre fiction was a going concern, with dedicated courses by the mid-1970s at the latest. So it was that, when I resumed matriculation toward my baccalaureate in the summer of 1983 at UCLA, I enrolled in an English department offering taught by the then young Raymond Paredes (now a dean) dedicated to the American Popular Novel Since World War Two, or some similar rubric. -

Ethics, Gesture and the Western
PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY ETHICS, GESTURE AND THE WESTERN MICHAEL MINDEN JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Hollywood Western films constitute one of the truly unmistakeable genres in the era of cinema. This reality of genre, and the expectations and effects that it enables in real people, demand to be taken seriously when one thinks about how cultures of performance and fiction relate to the challenge to think creatively about ethics. However, the commercial and formulaic nature of the products of Hollywood seem to represent a kind of medial discourse quite antithetical to serious ethical reflection. Giorgio Agamben is in my view exemplary in the creativity of his thinking about ethics. As part of this engagement he is deeply interested in what he calls the ethics of gesture in performance and film. I would like, in what follows, to think about the Western, despite its origins in the sphere of commodities, within an Agambenian framework. At the same time my intention is to exploit the genre’s accessibility with a view to probing and clarifying Agamben’s sometimes tangled elucubrations. Drawing on David Foster Wallace’s reflections on genre structures in his novel Infinite Jest, my conclusion will be that alongside an ethics of gesture, we should also be thinking about an ethics of genre when we reflect upon a possible ethical life today. The Hollywood Western: An Unlikely Place for an Ethics of Gesture? Agamben takes the position that western society of the twentieth century ‘lost its gestures’ in the sense that pathological forms of the loss of bodily control, ‘ataxia, tics, and dystonia’, became the norm, and thus invisible and forgotten (2000, 51). -

That image, possibly the most evocative and most repeated in the Western, signifies both continuing adventure and ever westward motion as well as a restless lack of final resolution. This thesis examines the ambiguous endings and the conditions leading up to them in two film Westerns of the 1950s, George Steven’s Shane (1953) and John Ford’s The Searchers (1956). -

Racial Ambiguity in the Borderlands: New Mexico’s African American Soldiers, 1860-1922 By Jacqulyne Anton Abstract: In the nineteenth century United States, African Americans faced severe forms of racism that manifested through institutions of slavery, segregation and discrimination. Antebellum and Civil War historians focus on African American resistance to white supremacy and oppression through various forms of resistance, some of which include violent revolts and the search for freedom in the North. With that being said, however, many historians seem to ignore the role of the US-Mexico borderlands in African Americans’ contestation of the racist laws of the American North and South. This article examines African Americans' experiences in the US-Mexico borderlands of New Mexico during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to illustrate how they used the borderlands as a tactic to escape and negotiate the racism, segregation, and discrimination they encountered in the North and South.
