It anempts to show how desire, and the expectation of its fulfilment, have the effect of propelling the narrative and implicating the reader in the text. It is also the aim of the paper to argue that, despite aU Ilfywhacker's gestures to the contrary. and its expectation of fulfilment, at no level is this desire realized in the noVel. It should be stated that this is not an evaluative judgement. The ftrst level at which desire is manifest in I flywhacker is in the realist aspects of the text The discussion of this draws upon Dcrrida's notion of Iogocentrism which is defmed 2 by Raman Selden as "the desire for a centre" • Selden explains: The notion of 'structure' ... has always presupposed a 'centre' of meaning of some sort. This 'centre' governs the structure but is itself not subject to structural analysis (to fmd the structure of the ct~ntre would be to fmd another centre). People desire a centre because it guarantees being as presence ... Western thought has developed innumerable terms which operate as centering principles: being, essence, substance, truth, fonn, beginning, end, purpose, consciousness, man, God and so on. 3 The logocentrism of the realist aspects of the text is evident in a number of elements which include the organization and structure of the novel. its use of traditional genres such as the picaresque, and in the theme of characters desiring stability and order in their lives. The metaflctional elements. with their self-reflexivity and emphasis on the plural nature of 'reality' also enforce the notion of desire in the text. These aspects subvert the logocentric binary oppositions in the novel. Derrida's theory of the supplement is useful here in conveying both the subversion and the subsequent desire. David Buchbinder provides a succinct explanation of the concept of the supplement: This may be defmed as a text or element which is added to or is considered secondary to another, more complete textual Slructure or system. However .• .if the structure can be added to, it cannot be complete, and if the supplement can be added, it cannot be merely secondary. Thus [in theJ opposition nature/culture, we can see that we commonly think of nature as primary and complete, while culture is secondary, because artificial, and, for the same reason destined to incompleteness: culture can be considered a supplement to nature. However, by the logic which Denida articulates his theory of the supplement, nature, despite our post-Romantic attatchment to the concept, cannot be complete ... otherwise culture would necessarily never have been invented. If culture is not supplementary to nature we must look for a third term which includes both "11ature" and" culture" .4 This theory highlights how the metafictional subversion of binary oppositions in 1/lywhacker results in the 'oppositions' existing in a pennanent relation of tension, being defffi.ed by what they are not, what they lack. As Eagleton comments in his discussion of Lacanian theory "All desire springs from a lack". s Desire is manifest in both the realist and metafictional aspects of the text. If Derrida's theory of the supplement is applied to the relation between the logocentric (realist) elements and the metafictional elements then desire can be seen to be operating on another level. This paper will argue that, as in Derrida's theory, the metafictional and realist aspects of lllywhacker exist in an interdependent relation of tension in which neither element is ever able to assert complete dominance over the other. Desire is also manifest in lllywhacker at lbe level of language itself. As Eagleton writes in his discussion of Lacan's theory of language: All desire springs from a lack. Human language works by such a lack: the absence of the real objects which signs designate, the fact lllat words have meaning only by virtue of the absence and exclusion of others. To enter language, Uten, is to become a prey to desire: language, Lacan remarks, is 'what hollows being into desire'.6 2 The paradoxical nature of language and the notions of deferral and difference which are essential to desire are encapsulated in Derrida's notion of dif/irance. As Buchbinder explains: ... if signs - words -have meaning only through difference, 'essential' or 'absolute' meaning does not exist Rather, what we have is the trace of those absent meanings whose differential relationship give meaning to the particular sign before us . ... the more a text reaches to encase meaning within its structure of signs, the more elusive that meaning becomes. This is the second meaning of difflrance, which in French can mean 'deferral'. Derrida argues that meaning is always to be attained, but never is attained. 7 The fmallevel at which desire operates in ll/ywhacker is in readers of the text. The paper lak~~ up the position that meaning is not given to readers but constructed by them. Psychoanalytic theory suggests that readers respond to those aspects of the text which fulfil their desire and represses those aspects which do not. Readers are also implicated in the text by such factors as the generic and structural aspects which generate an expectancy of closure and fulfilment. A similar gesture toward fulfilment is offered by Herben in his perception of the relationship between narrator and reader as being that of a salesman and his customer. A particular focus in Part Three will be the desire which springs from the split between the signifier and the signified. This draws upon the Lacanian theory that the signifier points towards, but can never arrive at, the signified (the meaning it signifies). The impossibility of hannony between the signifier and the signified, the lack implicit in their relation of tension, a "potentially endless movement from one signifier to another is what Lac an means by desire" .s This analysis approximately follows the structure of the novel, with its division into three sections, in order to more effectively trace the sense of development and progression which the novel generates. 3 Part Two: Book One An analysis of lllywhacker reveals the existence in the text of two competing views of reaJity. The metafictional elements of the novel have the effect of emphasizing the plural nature of reality and of undennining the text's own authority, whilst existing alongside, and competing against, a logocentric emphasis on order and authority. The relation of tension in which these elements exist gives rise to a sense of desire which pervades all aspects of Illywhacker. The title itself embodies Utis tension in that it serves both to assert the authority of the text by virtue of being an established convention of literature (like the dedication which follOws it) and to undermine this authority by its implied function ru:; a caveat emptor. This oscillation between the imposing and undcnnining of authority is neatly reflected in Carey's use of definitions from A Dictionary ofAustralian Colloquialisms which attempt to impose a defmitive meaning on the book's title.

    Books and Covers: Reflections on Some Recent Australian Novels ELIZABETH WEBBY For the 2002 Miles Franklin Award, given to the best Australian novel of the year, my fellow judges and I ended up with a short list of five novels. Three happened to come from the same publishing house – Pan Macmillan Australia – and we could not help remarking that much more time and money had been spent on the production of two of the titles than on the third. These two, by leading writers Tim Winton and Richard Flanagan, were hardbacks with full colour dust jackets and superior paper stock. Flanagan’s Gould’s Book of Fish (2001) also featured colour illustrations of the fish painted by Tasmanian convict artist W. B. Gould, the initial inspiration for the novel, at the beginning of each chapter, as well as changes in type colour to reflect the notion that Gould was writing his manuscript in whatever he could find to use as ink. The third book, Joan London’s Gilgamesh (2001), was a first novel, though by an author who had already published two prize- winning collections of short stories. It, however, was published in paperback, with a monochrome and far from eye-catching photographic cover that revealed little about the work’s content. One of the other judges – the former leading Australian publisher Hilary McPhee – was later quoted in a newspaper article on the Award, reflecting on what she described as the “under publishing” of many recent Australian novels. This in turn drew a response from the publisher of another of the short- listed novels, horrified that our reading of the novels submitted for the Miles Franklin Award might have been influenced in any way by a book’s production values.

    Ghosts of Ned Kelly: Peter Carey’s True History and the myths that haunt us Marija Pericic Master of Arts School of Communication and Cultural Studies Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne November 2011 Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (by Thesis Only). Abstract Ned Kelly has been an emblem of Australian national identity for over 130 years. This thesis examines Peter Carey’s reimagination of the Kelly myth in True History of the Kelly Gang (2000). It considers our continued investment in Ned Kelly and what our interpretations of him reveal about Australian identity. The paper explores how Carey’s departure from the traditional Kelly reveals the underlying anxieties about Australianness and masculinity that existed at the time of the novel’s publication, a time during which Australia was reassessing its colonial history. The first chapter of the paper examines True History’s complication of cultural memory. It argues that by problematising Kelly’s Irish cultural memory, our own cultural memory of Kelly is similarly challenged. The second chapter examines Carey’s construction of Kelly’s Irishness more deeply. It argues that Carey’s Kelly is not the emblem of politicised Irishness based on resistance to imperial Britain common to Kelly narratives. Instead, he is less politically aware and also claims a transnational identity. The third chapter explores how Carey’s Kelly diverges from key aspects of the Australian heroic ideal he is used to represent: hetero-masculinity, mateship and heroic failure. Carey’s most striking divergence comes from his unsettling of gender and sexual codes.

Archetypes are the living systems, structure and dynamics of social subjects and act as the guiding force while taking important decisions. Identity formation, reality principle, formation of binaries, justification for accepted realities, mechanism of truth, damnation and salvation- all are the schemata for the larger outlook of archetypes. Peter Carey in his novel ‘Oscar and Lucinda’ presents the work of archetypes in the action of its characters. The metanarrative of the novel is ruled by various archetypal symbols, beliefs and inheritance of binaries. The paper analyses the archetypes of persona, shadow principle and Anima and Animus to foreground the psyche of its characters. Concept of Archetypes was first introduced by the very famous Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. He believed archetypes are models of people, their mentality, behaviours and their personalities. According to him these archetypes plays a very significant role as inborn tendencies in order to influence the behaviour of humans. He suggested that the psyche of humans is consisting of three major components- ego, the personal unconsciousness and the collective unconsciousness.

Oscar Hopkins is a contradictory man, both pious and corrupt. He was raised by a strict, religious father, but he abandons his father's religion in favor of Anglicanism. He spends the rest of his life wondering if his decision has damned his soul to hell, as his father believes. Oscar further endangers his soul when he takes up gambling while in divinity school. Oscar justifies his vice by philosophizing that believing in God is a gamble anyway. How could God condemn a man for having a bit of fun at the racetrack?     Peter Carey’s Archive and the Australian Literary Field KEYVAN ALLAHYARI University of Melbourne Peter Carey’s archives are a missing element, albeit a remarkably important one, in the critical literature about the productive mechanisms of his celebrity. This paper explores the archiving of Carey’s materials in the State Library of Victoria, a process commenced by the Library’s purchase of the documents relating to Carey’s True History of the Kelly Gang (2000). This collection, catalogued as ‘The Papers and Drafts of Peter Carey’ marks the convergence of canonicity, the literary market, and the materiality of the cultural artefact. This archive adds a new facet to Carey’s image as an Australian author in the public domain, creating a sense of continuity of his relevance to the canon of Australian literature. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological paradigm, I demonstrate how the constitution of the archive is the result of the collective recognition of the economic and cultural capital of Carey’s manuscripts and paraphernalia. Through a case study of an agent in constructing the archive, I investigate the stakes invested in the ongoing dominant position of Carey in the Australian literary field into the twenty-first century. This section also examines the ways that agents augment their volume of literary and economic capital through engaging with, what I call, Carey’s archival capital.     How the Booker Prize Won the Prize 206 DOI: 10.2478/abcsj-2019-0023 American, British and Canadian Studies, Volume 33, December 2019 How the Booker Prize Won the Prize MERRITT MOSELEY University of North Carolina at Asheville, USA Abstract This article shows that the Booker Prize for fiction, which is neither the oldest nor the richest award given for novels in English, is nevertheless widely conceded to be the pre-eminent recognition. Sometimes it is called the "most significant"; sometimes the "most famous"; ultimately these two qualities are inseparable. I canvass some of the explanations for the Booker's position as top prize and argue that the most important reasons are Publicity, Flexibility, and Product Placement. The Booker has managed its public image skillfully; among the devices that assure its continued celebrity is the acceptance, almost the courting, of scandal. Flexibility is partly a function of the practice of naming five new judges each year, but the Booker has also been responsive to challenges, including the recognition that it paid too little attention to female authors. The decision to admit American books into the competition was a sign of flexibility, as it was a guarantee of scandal. And the Booker has followed a path of "product placement" that positions it accurately between demands for high art and for "readability," as examination of several periods in its history demonstrate.
