Sandra Oh Sandra Oh Is a Major Reason Why
30 INTERVIEW EDGE n Thursday nights in America, life simply stops for somewhere between 10 inte rview Oand 20 million television viewers as they settle in for the newest episode of Grey’s Anatomy . Sandra Oh Sandra Oh is a major reason why. As Dr. Cristina Yang, she plays opposite the series’ title character, Dr. Meredith Grey, who is portrayed by Ellen Pompeo. They lead an ensemble cast that has become a second family to fans since the show first aired seven seasons ago. As J.M. Stewart discovered in this interview, Oh’s knack for creating signature characters (think Arli$$ and Sideways ) comes from an astonishingly honest place. Sandra’s greatest talent, however, may be the ability to keep her head and value her craft in a world where performers are measured by SAG Awards and Emmy Nominations. Of which she has plenty, by the way. EDGE: How was it conveyed to you that Grey’s Anatomy was a different kind of medical drama? s e g a m I It was never said or expressed SO: y t t e formally. The writers and [series G / p u creator] Shonda Rhimes found a way o r G n of telling this story that just worked. It o i s i v is basically a classic storyline. There e l e T are five acts, each person has a C B A y medical issue, and a lot of the time e n s i these medical issues reflect what is D / o c i going on with the characters. -

Other feature credits include “Side Effects,” “The Ringer,” and the soon to be released “Knocked Up.” In 1999 Heigl was cast as the haughty yet vulnerable Isabel Evans in the TV series "Roswell." Her other TV credits include the ABC telefilm "Romy and Michele: Behind the Velvet Rope," a prequel to the hit feature film "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion." Heigl has often used her celebrity to promote the importance of organ donation, a cause she feels very strongly about. # # # DALE MIDKIFF (Clark Davis) – Dale Midkiff started acting off-Broadway before landing a starring role in the film "Streetwalkin'." Among his credits are guest-starring roles on “Without A Trace,” “CSI,” the starring roles of Elvis Presley in the made-for-TV biopic "Elvis and Me" and “A Cry for Help: The Tracey Thurman Story.” His other credits include "Torn Apart," "Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story," "Another Woman's Husband" and the Hallmark Channel Original movies “Back to You & Me,” “Love’s Enduring Promise” and “Love Comes Softly,” for which he received the Grace Award for TV at the 12th Annual MovieGuide Awards. -

The BBB Featuring Bernie Dresel – Live And Energized 11.1‐Channel Auro‐3D® “Live” Recording Event (Working Title) Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2016 Arrive By 7:00 PM, Sound Check 8:00 PM NO Admission Fee Or Cover Charge Joe’s Great American Bar & Grill, Burbank, California Bernie Dresel’ s jazz orchestra, The BBB, is without question one of Los Angeles’ most exciting large jazz ensembles, if not on the planet. The BBB provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz...a combination of intense swing and fiery soloing, as well as tight ensemble playing. The BBB is comprised of sixteen seasoned pros on the LA studio scene. Populated by LA’s finest players, The BBB takes the big band tradition into the new millennium with a contemporary, highly original sound featuring the witty, intricate, and hard‐ swinging compositions of established and up‐and‐coming composers and arrangers. And like those other famous road bands such as Buddy Rich’s, Count Basie’s, Woody Herman’s, Stan Kenton’s, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis’, the music and delivery of The BBB’s music is nothing less than astonishing when experienced live. The sound has a contemporary, dynamic and hard swinging energy with a focused edge to it that is like no other jazz orchestra, though reminiscent of Buddy Rich’s ensembles. The band make‐up is unique in that there is no piano but jazz/rockin’ guitar instead, in addition to four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and upright acoustic bass and drums. When people hear Bernie’s BBB, the first thing that hits them is its energy and intensity. -

Diagnosing Drama: Grey's Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics Of
Diagnosing Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation AMY LONG N FEBRUARY 5, 2006 NEARLY THIRTY-EIGHT MILLION VIEWERS CHOSE TO forego post-Super Bowl celebrations in favor of tuning in to a Omuch-hyped episode of ABC’s hit medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. The episode thus constitutes ‘‘the best scripted-series perfor- mance since the series finale of Friends’’ in 2004 and ‘‘the best per- formance of an ABC show since an episode of Home Improvement in 1994’’ (‘‘Grey’s Scores Big’’). Grey’s Anatomy and its multiracial ensem- ble stand in marked contrast to the all-white casts of both aforemen- tioned shows, a fact that has not been lost on media observers. When civil rights groups issued their annual ‘‘diversity report cards’’ for 2006, ABC garnered the highest overall grade of the four major net- works (an A-), thanks in part to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty (‘‘Grey’s Leads Charge’’). Its diverse cast and the production practices through which it was assembled have been the major focus of the media attention conferred upon Grey’s, second only to stories con- cerning the colossal audiences it routinely snags.1 The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes (currently the only African American woman ‘‘showrunner’’ in network television), gives the credit for her show’s diversity to her ‘‘race-blind’’ casting methods. In her Time Magazine profile of the writer and producer, Jeanne McDowell notes that ‘‘[Rhimes’] script for the pilot had no physical descriptions [of its characters] other than gender,’’ a statement repeated in almost all of the popular press coverage the show receives.2 As Rhimes herself affirmed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘‘We really read every color actor for every single part. -

A Textual Analysis of the Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21St Century Television
A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE CLOSER AND SAVING GRACE: FEMINIST AND GENRE THEORY IN 21ST CENTURY TELEVISION Lelia M. Stone, B.A., M.P.A. A Textual Analysis of The Closer and Saving Grace: Feminist and Genre Theory in 21st Century Television. Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), December 2013, 89 pp., references 82 titles. Television is a universally popular medium that offers a myriad of choices to viewers around the world. American programs both reflect and influence the culture of the times. Two dramatic series, The Closer and Saving Grace, were presented on the same cable network and shared genre and design. Both featured female police detectives and demonstrated an acute awareness of postmodern feminism. The Closer was very successful, yet Saving Grace, was cancelled midway through the third season. A close study of plot lines and character development in the shows will elucidate their fundamental differences that serve to explain their widely disparate reception by the viewing public. That pride is translated into generous financial support that benefits the university’s students and our Sability to reach off campus to serve the region. As Chancellor, I am committed to harnessing and growing an already strong spirit of generosity that surrounds UNCP. When I took office in July 2015, our advancement team had just marked the end of a fiscal year that saw more than $2 million in charitable giving, an increase of more than 18 percent over the previous year. There were many bright spots during the year, including growth in endowed scholarships, athletic and corporate giving, and alumni participation.
