That pride is translated into generous financial support that benefits the university’s students and our Sability to reach off campus to serve the region. As Chancellor, I am committed to harnessing and growing an already strong spirit of generosity that surrounds UNCP. When I took office in July 2015, our advancement team had just marked the end of a fiscal year that saw more than $2 million in charitable giving, an increase of more than 18 percent over the previous year. There were many bright spots during the year, including growth in endowed scholarships, athletic and corporate giving, and alumni participation. I believe a main driver of increased private support is recognition of the university’s important – and transformative – role in our region, which faces serious challenges but is blessed with tremendous opportunity. According to a recent economic impact study, UNCP, along with our students, visitors and alumni, adds $256.3 million in income across our nine-county service area. This is equivalent to creating 5,171 new jobs. But more important than the university’s spending are our educational programs and outreach initiatives designed to spur economic growth. In the fall, we launched a fully online Master of Business Administration option, making our affordable and high-quality program more flexible and popular than ever. And we worked with legislators to add $23 million for a new UNCP School of Business to the Connect NC Bond package. We also celebrated the opening of the UNCP Entrepreneurship Incubator, which will provide workspace and expert support to help entrepreneurs throughout our region turn their ideas into viable businesses. As UNC Pembroke expands its outreach, we’re also growing the number of programs and services available to our students. We launched an exciting partnership with East Carolina University that paves the way for our own Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. We broke ground on a state-of-the-art Student Health Services building – a testament to the foundation of health and wellness in the lives of our students. And we received word from the N.C. Department of Transportation that a much-needed pedestrian safety project near campus is moving forward. When it comes to supporting students, UNC Pembroke continues to win praise for our dedication to one group in particular: veterans. In the past year, the university received high marks from three national veterans publications. We consider these accolades badges of honor. The ongoing successes at UNCP would not be possible without your support, which makes the difference between mediocrity and excellence. Your gift is based on a belief in the power of education. You may never meet the students who benefit from your generosity. But as someone who looks in the eyes of our graduates as I award their degrees, I can personally attest that you are making a difference. Whether you are a first-time donor or a longtime supporter of the university, I want to thank you for your contribution and ask for your continued support. Together, we are changing lives through education. Robin Gary Cummings MESSAGE FROM CHANCELLOR ROBIN GARY CUMMINGS MESSAGE FROM CHANCELLOR ROBIN GARY Chancellor 4 | UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PEMBROKE DR. ROBIN GARY CUMMINGS | Chancellor UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PEMBROKE | 5 WENDY LOWERY | Vice Chancellor for Advancement 6 | UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PEMBROKE he work of an advancement operation at all universities has the same conceptual purpose, regardless of the size of the institution, the number of alumni, or the size of its endowment. We’re all working to achieve the same concept – promoting a positive image of Tan institution we all love, provide resources for our faculty, staff, and students that otherwise are not available, and fi nd ways for our alumni to remain connected to the institution that made one of the largest impacts on their lives. MESSAGE FROM VICE CHANCELLOR WENDY LOWERY Institutions go about achieving this in a variety of ways, as each institution is unique. One of the things about our university, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, is that fi nding what makes us unique isn’t a challenge. We are an institution founded by men who knew that education was the pathway to success. We provide a quality university experience for students who are the fi rst in their families to set foot on a college campus. We are the only university in the country founded by American Indians for American Indians. There is rarely a week that goes by that I don’t run in to someone who notices my lapel pin and instantly makes a connection to UNC Pembroke. Our work in the Offi ce of Advancement is not easy but it is one of the most fulfi lling careers you can fi nd. We are able to connect alumni, friends, corporations, and organizations with the mission of our institution and fi nd a way to make their investment worthwhile, meaningful, and impactful. One of the things that I hope you, our reader, realizes throughout this publication is that your support of UNC Pembroke in whatever shape it comes in, is important. In our work, everything matters. Every gift matters, every person who attends an event on our campus in support of students matters. Every gift makes an impact. Your service on boards, committees, and advisory groups on our campus – matters. The community that shows up in large crowds to support our student athletes matters. I hope that each of you know how much you mean to UNC Pembroke. The purpose of this document is to recognize donors at every level of support. Those who give $5 or those who give $5,000 matter. One of the largest misperceptions of giving back to your alma mater is the thought that it has to come in a large way – that is not the case. Gifts of all sizes make an impact at UNCP – another way that we are unique. Our students are greatly affected by every single dollar given and it can determine their ability to succeed as a student. Every single name in this publication made a difference in the lives of so many people. I hope that this list will only continue to grow and the names we recognize for gifts in 2014-2015 will reappear in next year’s publication. UNC Pembroke belongs to you; the successes of our institution are your success stories. Everything matters.
