Do not let “thugs” rewrite the history of our city, state, country, and the Judeo-Christian Western world. Please do not let a small crowd 1 of angry people stamp out history in favor of re-writing it so our children, grand children, and future generations do not know the heroes that contributed to the founding of our city, state, country and the Western world. Pope Francis would never have canonized St. Junipero Serra if he was not a heroic defender and lover of the people to whom he devoted his life. He left a comfortable life in Spain to bring his love of Christ to the Native people in this land. His motivation was love. The native people mourned his death. Good evening, According to the City website the purpose of Historical Preservation Committee is to make “recommendations concerning the designation of historic districts, landmarks, sites, natural configuration, buildings, structures and points of interest significant to the heritage and development of the City.” Given this as the purpose of this committee I ask, what is more significant than a monument to the founder of a Mission, in which our City was named after? Although this is not the original statue, a statue of Father Junipero Serra has stood here since the 1930s thanks to funding by the WPA. It is a beautiful piece of art that ties in with our charming downtown architecture. Father Serra is a Catholic Saint who built a beautiful Mission and cared for the Native people of the area. Far from being a murder as some have slandered him to be, Father Serra took great care of the Native people who came into the Mission. The Mission brought agriculture to the region, growing wheat, apples and corn. Livestock was raised here including horses and cattle. This food supplied the Native peoples with important nutrition in times of famine and drought in the local area. Father Serra was a humble man often working alongside the Mission residents sweeping the halls and doing manual labor. Father Serra was a reformer. There was not enslavement of the local Native peoples here like there were in the West Indies and other parts of the Spanish Empire. There were no great wars to exterminate the Natives as the English did on the East Coast. I have engaged in debates with others who claim Serra is a monster, yet no one has been able to give one specific example of anything close to these charges that Father Serra ever committed. We need to keep this statue, where it is, on public ground to acknowledge his role in the History of our City, our State and Nation. If we fail to do this to appease a small vocal group of outsiders then what will be next? By their same logic the name of our City is offensive and we should change our street names. It doesn’t stop with the removal and imprisonment of this statue at the Mission it begins there. Instead we should increase our monuments to the past. We should commemorate those who built our City not tear them down. We should acknowledge the local Native people who were and still are here to this day. We should acknowledge the Mexican period, the early Chinese population who lived here along with the early City leaders and the Agricultural industry. We need to build up or knowledge of History, not tear it down. Please do not hide behind the paid for Historic Assessment Report to avoid your responsibility to preserve our city’s history. Please keep this statue a designated historical landmark as those who came before you were wise enough to understand. If this committee chooses to re‐designate the Father Serra statue, then it is abandoning its mission. It will have become nothing more than an Orwellian ministry from 1984 and is not worthy of the name “Historical Preservation Committee.” Thank you for your time.     Jewish Liturgical Music for Treble Choirs Prepared by Miriam Altman, July, 2014 A couple notes on current Jewish liturgical music • Like the Christian liturgy, Jewish liturgical music often contains many, many settings of identical texts, varying in style over the years. Just like one can hear dozens of settings of “Gloria,” or “Kyrie eleison,” you will find a comparable amount of “Ose Shalom”s and “Mi Chamochah”s. In the past couple decades, the school music publishers have become aware of this and will sometimes have a prolific composer (e.g. John Leavitt) write a song using Jewish liturgical texts. These pieces are not performed in synagogues, nor would most Jews be familiar with them. (The same goes for almost anything published for Chanukah.) Songs in the list below are ones that would be recognizable to most American Jews, particularly in Reform and, to a lesser extent, Conservative congregations. Orthodox Jews probably would not be, keeping to much older or internally-known melodies. • Cantors and song leaders will improvise and arrange harmonies from melodic lead sheets, both for themselves (during congregational singing) and for small group or choral performances. You should feel absolutely welcome to do the same. “Traditional” arrangements, published in octavo form, are sometimes available, but they are utilized far less commonly than the practice of learning harmonies/arrangements by ear. This is not unlike the Black gospel choral tradition (and other folk traditions, of course). Use YouTube, iTunes, or connect with a cantor at a local synagogue for ideas. Professional Jewish cantors, by the way, are ordained clergy and complete years of schooling to receive their certification.

    Diagnosing Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation AMY LONG N FEBRUARY 5, 2006 NEARLY THIRTY-EIGHT MILLION VIEWERS CHOSE TO forego post-Super Bowl celebrations in favor of tuning in to a Omuch-hyped episode of ABC’s hit medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. The episode thus constitutes ‘‘the best scripted-series perfor- mance since the series finale of Friends’’ in 2004 and ‘‘the best per- formance of an ABC show since an episode of Home Improvement in 1994’’ (‘‘Grey’s Scores Big’’). Grey’s Anatomy and its multiracial ensem- ble stand in marked contrast to the all-white casts of both aforemen- tioned shows, a fact that has not been lost on media observers. When civil rights groups issued their annual ‘‘diversity report cards’’ for 2006, ABC garnered the highest overall grade of the four major net- works (an A-), thanks in part to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty (‘‘Grey’s Leads Charge’’). Its diverse cast and the production practices through which it was assembled have been the major focus of the media attention conferred upon Grey’s, second only to stories con- cerning the colossal audiences it routinely snags.1 The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes (currently the only African American woman ‘‘showrunner’’ in network television), gives the credit for her show’s diversity to her ‘‘race-blind’’ casting methods. In her Time Magazine profile of the writer and producer, Jeanne McDowell notes that ‘‘[Rhimes’] script for the pilot had no physical descriptions [of its characters] other than gender,’’ a statement repeated in almost all of the popular press coverage the show receives.2 As Rhimes herself affirmed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘‘We really read every color actor for every single part.

    Lahiton [email protected] 1 Lahiton magazine was founded in 1969 by two partners, Uri Aloni and David Paz, and was funded by an investment from Avraham Alon, a Ramlah nightclub owner and promoter. Uri Aloni was a pop culture writer and rabid music fan while David Paz, another popular music enthusiast, was an editor who knew his way around the technical side of print production. The name “Lahiton,” reportedly invented by entertainers Rivka Michaeli and Ehud Manor, combines the Hebrew words for hit, “lahit” and newspaper, “iton.” Lahiton [email protected] 2 Uri Aloni cites the British fan magazines Melody Maker and New Music Express as influences; (Eshed 2008) while living in London and writing for the pop music columns of Yediot Ahronot and La-Isha, he would lift editorial content and photos from the latest British pop magazines, write articles, then find an Israel-bound traveler at the London airport to transport the articles into the hands of his editors. In Lahiton’s early days, Aloni and Paz continued this practice (Edut 2014). Eventually, however Lahiton’s flavor became uniquely secular Israeli. Although in 1965 the Beatles were famously denied permission to perform in Israel (Singer 2015), by the time Lahiton got started in 1969 there was no stemming the tide; the international pop music scene had permeated Israel’s insular and conservative culture. At the time there were no other Hebrew publications that covered what was going on both at home and in America and Europe. Lahiton began as a bimonthly publication, but within the first year, when press runs of 5000 copies sold out on a regular basis, Paz and Aloni turned it into a weekly.

POWER OF MUSIC V The past month in Jewish history and in our calendar has been momentous. We experienced Israel’s 70th anniversary, celebrated in several excellent events in our community, the 51st anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, and the relocation of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. In the midst of all this euphoria, what might have escaped your attention is Israel’s winning the prestigious Eurovision song contest on May 12th 2018 in Lisbon, Portugal. That night in our Jewish calendar - the 28th of Iyar, commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six Day War of 1967. This is the fourth time Israel has won Eurovision, one of the world’s most famous international song contests. The winning song “Toy”, a pop anthem about female independence, was performed by 25 year old Netta Barzilai, accompanied by her signature “chicken dance.” Netta had placed third by the official judges, but won thanks to tele-voters from around the world catapulting her to victory. Hours before the victory, Israeli superstar film actress Gal Gadot had urged her twenty million Instagram followers to vote for Israel’s entry. Including words like “I’m not your toy you stupid boy...,” it was influenced by the #MeToo movement. The Eurovision contest has often been embroiled in political and religious controversies, although politically tinged songs are unofficially disallowed.
