RIBES A b s t r a c t : A new species, Macrolophus pericarli, from the Canary Islands is described and figured. It is the smallest of the West Palaearctic species of this genus and its micropterous fonn is predominant. The host plant is the endemic Cisfus symphytifolius LAM. on which it lives associated with another Canarian endemic Dicyphini - species, Cyrtopeltis canariensis LBG. I. K e y w o r d s : Heteroptera, Miridae, Macrolophus, new species, Canary Islands Introduction The tribe Dicyphini is so far represented in the Canary Islands by 4 genera (Cyrtopeltis, Dicyphus, Macrolophus, Singhalesia) and 9 species. Macrolophus melanotoma (A. COSTA 1853) (= caliginosus WAGNER 1950) is the only species reported of this genus and is known to occur on al1 islands except the arid eastemmost ones, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The first specimens of this inconspicuous small new species collected several years ago by one of the authors (EH) were micropterous and could not be placed in any of the Dicyphini genera. Investigations on more material collected later on the host plant and the occurrence of two macropterous specimens have shown now that it is best to place them in the genus Macrolophus. Macropterous S are from Tenerife, Aguamansa - Caldera, 14 XI 1986 J.P. Duffels in Zoologisch Museum Amsterxam (13)and coll. Heiss (0). Holotype: Micropterous p from Tenerife, Sta. Úrsula 900m, 21-27 XI 1992 Heiss, deposited in the collection of E.Heiss as a pennanent loan of the Tiroler Landesmuseum Innsbruck. Paratypes in the collections of the authors, B. On tomato, predatory insects like plant bugs or mirids provide BC services against several insect pests. Native predators are adapted to local conditions of climate and ecology and therefore may be well suited to provide BC services. Dicyphus cerastii is a predatory mirid that is present in the Mediterranean region and occurs in tomato greenhouses in Portugal. However, little is known about its contribution to BC in this crop. In this study, we evaluated how prey consumption is affected by increasing prey abundance on four different prey, in laboratory conditions. We found that the predator can increase its predation rate until a maximum is reached and that prey characteristics like size and mobility can affect predation.

We evaluated the influence of fruit ripeness and presence of prey and water, on fruit damage caused by nymphs and adults of two species (Dicyphus cerastii and Nesidiocoris tenuis) in 24h. For both species combined, fruit ripeness was the most important factor and unripe fruit suf- fered more damage. The presence of prey only reduced damage on unripe fruits. Factor importance on fruit damage varied between species. For D. cerastii fruit ripeness was the most important factor whereas for N. tenuis it was mirid age. The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), originates from South America, and remains one of the main tomato pests in this continent. Since its introduction to Europe in 2006, Mediterranean countries have also been exposed to this pest. Because of the endophytic habits of the larvae and ability of adults to reproduce parthenogenetically, chemicals and sexual pheromone- based control methods generate poor results. Recently, the use of biocontrol agents, such as Macrolophus pygmaeus Rambur (Heteroptera: Miridae), has been investigated as an alternative means of control, the results of which are presented in this review. Macrolophus pygmaeus is a mirid bug that is widely used to control different phytophagous insects in integrated pest management strategies through Europe. Several studies have confirmed the high predation potential of M. pygmaeus on T. absoluta under laboratory and semi-field conditions. This predator spontaneously colonizes tomato greenhouses in the southern Mediterranean countries. The use of banker plants (i.e., plants that provide a habitat to the predator) improves the colonization ability of this natural enemy. Hence, if the local population size is low, an augmentative strategy could be adopted.

Abstract Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur, 1839) is recorded for the first time in New Zealand. Viable adult M. pygmaeus were collected in the field in Auckland, in 2007, indicating that the species had already established itself in this country. The biology of M. pygmaeus is briefly discussed in the light of its potential economic benefits to growers of vegetable crops affected by whitefly (Aleyrodidae). The adults and nymphs are described and illustrated. An updated key to the genera and species of Bryocorinae in New Zealand is provided. Key words: established; economic importance; description; diagnosis; biology; key to genera and species Introduction The mirid species Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur, 1839) was first collected in Auckland Botanic Gardens in February 2007. Further specimens were collected in August and September 2007 from the same site, indicat- ing that a breeding population is present. Based on the length of time that M. pygmaeus is known to have been present and the abundance of suitable prey (whitefly), it is likely that the species will establish well in other parts of New Zealand with climates similar to Auckland’s.

Status of subfamily Bryocorinae (Heteroptera: Miridae) in Sri Lanka was reviewed in this paper because it is the most agriculturally important and morphologically diverse subfamily of Miridae. Twenty Bryocorinae species belongs to 12 genera in three tribes have already been recorded from Sri Lanka in the past. In a study that started in 1998, Sri Lankan Bryocorines have been collected to establish a reference collection and to prepare identification keys. As a result,fifteen species belonging to 9 genera have been re-described including one unidentified species and one new record, Nesidiocoris tenius Reuter. Felisacus ul a brat us Motschulsky is identified under subtribe Monaloniina, which was previously treated under subtribe Dicyphina. An identification key for the subfamily Bryocorinae was prepared up to the generic level. INTRODUCTION Miridae is the largest family of the suborder Heteroptera. Mirids are very delicate in nature and are predominantly plant feeders and few are predacious on other insects. Usually they do not posses ocelli. More often their colouration blends well with the foliage, flowers or bark on which they rest or feed. Most distinct characters are the presence of cuneus on the posterior part of the corium and one or two closed cells on the membrane. Carvalho (1955) compiled the first catalogue of Miridae. Of the mirids described in Sri Lanka, more than 87% have been described before 1914 by foreign authors (Wijesekara and Henry, 1999).

Many plant feeders in the Miridae family, like Lygus Hahn and Adelphocoris Reuter, could do direct damage to their host plants by feeding on the plants' sap (Brimah et al., 1982). Nymphs of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), larvae of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and carnation plants introduced into a 50 × 50 × 50 cm methacrylate box, together with adults mirids, in a climate-controlled chamber (25 ± 1 °C, 60 ± 5% HR, 16:8 h L:D photoperiod) were used to analyse feeding behaviour. In particular, data on realised fecundity, sex ratio and adult longevity were analysed. Realised fecundity differed significantly with respect to prey availability (F1, 267 = 44504.92; p ≤ 0.001).
