This past Wednesday at 12:24AM, summer officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere and with it, we marked the longest day of the year. From this point onward, thru December, the days will slowly grow shorter as the sun begins to rise a bit later and set a bit earlier. According to the US Naval Observatory, the days get about a minute shorter on both ends. From a Church standpoint, the Summer and Winter Solstice correspond quite well to the Birth of John the Baptist and the Birth of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us there was about a six month difference in age between the two cousins. So with Christmas being exactly six months from now, one can easily guess whose birthday we celebrate this weekend. That’s right, the birth of John the Baptist! And His words/life are worth recalling. We remember his most famous words: “I must decrease, He must increase.” Well, with the decrease of worldly light from the sun beginning this week...the true light from the Son will begin to shine, more and more. May that in fact happen for each one of us as we journey through this summertime! May the Son shine more and more within us, casting out the darkness of the enemy. Of course, with summer, the sun might be going down earlier, but the temperatures are up. And with that I need to share with you some info about our Church Air Conditioning. On Friday, June 9, our air conditioning man was out for his semi-annual visit to inspect the AC units for the start of summer. He shared with me the following info: One of the four units that provides for the Church is out of commission and cannot be easily repaired. The remaining three units have issues and are in need of some decisions. The units themselves are 21 years old and with regular maintenance have provided well for us over the years. But they are not getting any younger and like an older body, the aches and vulnerability increase. In addition, we have 2 air handlers which bow air into the Church from the choir loft. Those units are 50 years old and again while they have served us well, they too are in need of some care. And so, with this information, some decisions are at hand and need to be made. Thanks be to God, as I hope you have noticed, the three units are cooling the Church fairly well. They get us to 70 degrees but they do so by running a lot and are obviously not working as they ought. I pray they keep running especially through summer, but we don’t know...so we need to start planning. I have spoken together with our AC man, Mike Miller, head of our facilities committee, Marie Elliott and our finance council and currently options are being laid out. Whatever we do, I want it to be done wisely with the future in mind. To that end, options and estimates are being investigated and I will keep you posted. I know parishes that do special collection for air conditioning and as you might imagine it’s always a lucrative collection. That may or may not be the route we go...at this point, we’re still collecting info and I will keep you posted. My main concern at this point is that what we have continues to work. May I ask you to pray to the patron saint of AC? Whose that, you might ask? Well, I’m not sure. There is some who think that it’s Santa Claus. Others suggest that Willis Carrier, the inventor of AC must be a saint. I think I’m gonna stick with Patrick!! He kicked the snakes out of Ireland, I’m sure he can keep our AC running through summer.
