LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL / HISTORICAL SKETCH In 1963, Allan Bell founded America’s Best Attractions (ABA), a state and union licensed theatrical and music agency headquartered in North Kansas City, Missouri. A trained lawyer, Bell served as owner, operator and bookkeeper of ABA, personally booking gigs and managing artists through his agency. ABA handled a variety of local, regional and national talents: singers, bands, musicians, orchestras, dancers, burlesque performers, magicians, puppeteers, comedians, speakers, circus and animal acts. Allan Bell Charters, the travel affiliate of ABA handling group, business and organization charters to destinations worldwide, was established in 1970. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Allan Bell Collection was purchased by LaBudde Special Collections from Nancy Rooks in September 2008. The collection originally was acquired from Allan Bell by Ron Rooks, Nancy’s late husband and owner of Music Exchange record store in Kansas City, Missouri. Material chronicles from 1961 to 1976 Bell’s theatrical and music agency America’s Best Attractions (ABA) situated in North Kansas City, with the majority of material concentrated between 1965 and 1973. Divided into five series (correspondence, artist packages, contracts, photographs and miscellaneous material), the original collection is arranged to preserve the large-scale organization it was received in, with related material being consolidated and re-arranged into smaller sub-groups. Business correspondence and artist packages related to booking and promoting talent form the bulk of the collection and are contained in nine boxes. Material includes letters, press kits, biographies, flyers, posters, mailers, newsletters, newspaper and magazine clippings, contracts, postcards, guides and programs. The collection also holds close to 500 artist publicity images, including those of Kansas City musicians and bands. Addendum 1 comprises related material acquired in February 2009 from James Trotter, a record collector from Kansas City. Included are photocopies of correspondence, contracts, photos, receipts and miscellaneous material mostly relating to Lee Harris and the Teardrops as well as Tommy Gadson and the Fabulous Derbies. Addendum 2 comprises related material acquired in Spring/Summer 2016 from Dante Carfagna, a record collector in the Midwest. Included are additional correspondence, financial documents, contracts, publications, artist promotional material, photographs, and other miscellaneous items. P.O. Box 250 Ellerslie, Georgia 31807 Principal Investigator, Daniel T. Elliott _________________________________ April 2002 Abstract Archaeological data recovery at the Hannah’s Quarter site (9Jf195) in rural Jefferson County, Georgia was conducted by Southern Research Historic Preservation Consultants in 2001. This project was performed for the Georgia Department of Transportation through a contract with Earth Tech in Raleigh, NC as Section 106 compliance in advance of the Fall Line Freeway construction. The archaeological study uncovered a small residential compound from the late eighteenth through early nineteenth centuries. Three dwelling loci and one possible outbuilding locus were delineated. The occupation at this site was evidenced by a series of cultural features, including pits, posts, and cellars and extremely sparse material culture evidence. The settlement began as part of the Queensborough Township, which was populated by Scots-Irish Presbyterians from northern Ireland from about 1768 to 1772. William Hannah was identified as a strong candidate for being the original owner of the property at 9Jf195.

  • Stu Davis: Canada's Cowboy Troubadour
Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. Craft Peter Gabriel’s Real World. Today she has a studio of her own in southeast London, where she composes themes and scores for TV productions, computer games and films. She is particularly known for her work on documentaries and real-life stories. Her mainstream television work and pieces for commercials, promos and production libraries are done under the umbrella of her Soundology company, while features, dramas and ‘unique creative projects’ are credited to her own name. You’ve said you became fascinated by TV music as a child. What drew you to that and did you make a connection with technology in thinking about music in relation to pictures? When I was a child there were only four TV channels — no iPlayer or streaming. This meant watching TV was a big event in my house and my senses were heightened to the catchiness and distinctiveness of themes such as Knight Rider (composers: Glenn A Larson/Stu Phillips), Grange Hill (library track Chicken Man by Alan Hawkshaw), Doctor Who (Ron Grainer, electronically realised by Delia Derbyshire), Blake’s 7 (Dudley Simpson) and Tales of the Unexpected (Grainer).
