Pool is a classification of a cue sport played on a felt covered table with six pockets along the rails (frame), into which balls are deposited by hitting them with a Cue that are tapered sticks, typically about 57– 59 inches long and usually between 16 and 21 ounce, good aim and precision. Each specific pool game has its own name; some of the bet- ter-known include eight-ball, and its variant blackball, nine-ball, ten- ball, seven-ball, , one-pocket, and . The 3 table pool room at NMSRC is always a busy place. The sound of “the break” can be heard during all open hours. Pool players meet staff at the door when we open and escort us out at closing time. After discussing the game with the NMSRC members pool players reasons for playing the game varies from” it’s fun”,” love of the game” and “just hanging out with the guys”. At least three members were “ Boys” in their youth. This job at the local pool hall consisted of racking up the balls, placing the balls in the triangle frame, before each game for players at each table. This was to ensure a fair start for each player. Players also stated that as youths the game kept them off the streets and out of trouble. Some stated that playing now keeps them out of trouble at home! Most guys have played for many years. Many are very good. Even competitively good. You might even say a few have made very good wages with the stick and chalk. A really good pool player is often re- ferred to as a “pool shark.”

When talking to members the name “Fred’s Pool Hall” of Carlsbad often comes up. Many players mention it when asked “when did you start playing?” Answers range from “tall enough to see over the ta- ble” to “about 3 years ago”. Friendships have been made in the Pool Room. Respect is earned in the Pool Room. And stories are probably a little embellished, from time to time, but the camaraderie among the players is strong and last- ing. And who knew it was also good for you? 7
