ESKENAZI CELEBRATES CHINESE CERAMICS OF THE SONG DYNASTY (960 to 1279 AD) Principal wares of the Song period from a private collection 8 to 29 May 2015, London Eskenazi will present an exhibition of 30 important ceramics of the Song Dynasty from 8 to 29 May 2015 in London. The ceramics are from a highly distinguished private collection and represent almost all the principal wares of the period, widely recognised as a highpoint for ceramic art. The Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) was a golden age in China. Great prosperity led to huge social and economic changes, and intellectual and technological advances that shaped Chinese culture and politics for centuries to follow. It was during this time that China introduced the first printed banknotes and the use of gunpowder. The ceramics of the period reached a peak with advances in design, decoration, glaze and firing techniques. Song ceramics were revered and copied as early as the 15th century within China and have continued to influence design worldwide into the 21st century, not least the Studio and Art Pottery movements in the West, of the 19th and 20th centuries. Ostensibly simple tea-bowls with plain forms and glazes have been treasured in Japan for hundreds of years as Important Cultural Art Objects. The exhibition in May will offer a fascinating insight into the history of the enduring international popularity of these Chinese wares, with examples previously owned by many of the most celebrated western collectors of the 20th century, including Lord Cunliffe, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Clark, Johannes Hellner and Alfred Schoenlicht. -

Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in partnership with the Mehrangarh Museum Trust of Jodhpur, the exhibition features 250 objects from the 16th to the mid-20th century including intricate paintings, decorative arts, elaborate tents, canopies, textiles, jewelry, and weapons, presented with photos and videos that evoke the impressive setting of the Mehrangarh Museum. Peacock in the Desert presents a vision of a cosmopolitan court culture that relies on art as an essential aspect of its rule. Established in the 15th century, the city of Jodhpur was ruled by the Rathores for over seven centuries. The objects on view, many of which have not been seen beyond palace walls or traveled to the United States, tell the story of this vast desert kingdom. The exhibition traces the kingdom’s cultural landscape as it was continuously reshaped by cross-cultural encounters, notably by two successive empires who ruled India: the Mughals and the British. Other places of interest are the Taragarh Fort which lies 3 km beyond the Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra mosque and the Museum - once a palace built by Mughal Emperor Akbar, this imposing building now houses the government museum. Continue on drive to Pushkar. 11 km from Ajmer on the edge of the desert is the tiny tranquil town of Pushkar along the bank of the picturesque Pushkar Lake - an important pilgrimage spot for the Hindus. No pilgrimage is considered complete without a dip in the holy Pushkar Lake. Pushkar has as many as 400 temples and 52 ghats and the only temple in the country that is dedicated to Brahama. While Pushkar is a heaven for the religiously inclined, it is also the venue of one of the country's most colourful cattle fairs - the Pushkar Fair. On arrival, check-in and overnight at hotel.
