24 TIMBER/WEST — August, 2001 2001 PACIFIC LOGGING CONGRESS • IN THE WOODS • CHILDREN’S EDUCATION DAY • Tykes, Teachers and Trees

Pacific Logging Congress (PLC) has made it a priority to edu- cate students and teachers about harvesting and forestry. It has and continues to produce videos and brochures and set up exhibit booths at teacher conferences around the West. Videos The PLC is probably best known for its IT TAKES A TREE program, consisting of a full color, 32-page brochure about forestry and logging and an accompanying 17-minute video. The program is available in two versions for both the United States and British Columbia. PLC has supplied its brochures and videos to over 15,000 sci- ence teachers throughout the years. And the IT TAKES A TREE program has continued to grow in popularity. In fact, teachers have approached the PLC for more materials that will work with their curriculums. In answer to the teacher’s requests, PLC is focusing on an interpretive CD-ROM series. Educators and forestry professionals are writing scripts and carefully editing all material to assure interesting, accurate, cur- rent unbiased information. The CD-ROMs are also being customized in content and title for each jurisdic- tion in the U.S. and Canada.

"We are receiving a great response from the Portland area schools this year," says Executive Director, Rikki Wellman. "We hope to have 4,000 stu- dents. From what I hear though, the response has been so overwhelming we may have to turn students away, which is something we do not want to do. We’re trying now to figure out how to accommodate all the schools who want to attend." Judging by today’s political environment, there’s a large communication gap between the urban and rural communities. Continuing to educate kids and teachers about harvesting and forest stewardship plays a big piece in lessening that gap. The PLC
