Mostdirectors at this weekend'sCollegiate Jazz Festivalwill be wearingsuits. One will sport a clerical collar. 7:30 Universityof NotreDame That "one" is Father GeorgeWiskirchen, director of the Notre Dame jazz bands since their inception in 1972. He will take the stage with the NotreDame Jazz Ensemblethis weekend. 8:15 OberlinCombo Wiskirchenwas born in 1928 in Quincy,Ill., a small town on the MississippiRiver. He began playing trumpet in eighth grade. 9:00 NortheasternIllinois University "I got bit by the music bug," Wiskirchensaid, "and that's what I alwayswanted to be - a music teacher." "I did a lot of listening [to jazz] and a little playingin high school, but not much," he said. 9:45 Universityof NotreDame Combo Wiskirchenentered MoreauSeminary in 1946 and majoredin philosophy. While at NotreDame, he took as manymusic electivesas possible. 10:30 Universityof NorthFlorida After his ordination as a HolyCross priest in 1955, Wiskirchenbecame a teacher at Notre Dame High Schoolin Niles,Ill. He took a degree in music from NorthwesternUniversity in Evanston,Ill. 11:15Judges' Jam "WhenI began teaching in 1955, there were few jazz bands, and the kids [at Notre Dame HighSchool] wantedto start one, so we did," Wiskirchensaid. Wiskirchen'sNotre Dame HighSchool band competed in a high school festivalin Chicagoin 1960. The 1:30 LousianaState University prize was to appear at the CollegiateJazz Festival(CJF) at the Universityof Notre Dame.Wiskirchen's band won, and that was the first time he had a band on the stage at CJE 2:15 Universityof Alabama In 1972, Wiskirchencame to the Universityto teach in the band program. "The first thing I did was put together a big band," he said. 3:00 CentralMichigan University The NotreDame jazz band didn't competeat CJFin its first year of existence, but Wiskirchenhad them up on the stage in 1974. He's had a band on the stage everyyear since then. 3:45 CentreDimensions, His past students stay in touch. Flippingthrough an album full of pictures of jazz bands from everyyear, Wiskirchencan name all of the students in the pictures. He knowswhat most of them are doing now. PennState University Whilemost students in the NotreDame jazz program are not music majors and do not pursue a career in the musicfield, Wiskirchen has seen manystudents follow music careers, on the jazzCircuit, as educators, or as composers. This year, the NotreDame Jazz Ensembleperformed a piece written by a previousmember. 7:30 CentralMichigan University Jazz Jim Pankow, founder of the group ,was a student ofWiskirchen'sat NotreDame High School, and credits Wiskirchenwith introducinghim to jazz and encouraginghim in music, according to a recent inter Percussion& SteelDrum Ensemble viewwith the ChicagoTribune. Wiskirchenhas published three books for jazz musicians and has written many articles for Downbeat 8:15 WesternMichigan University Quintet magazineand other journals dedicated to music and education. "There's been so much that's been so memorableover the years," Wiskirchensaid, when asked what his 9:00 OberlinJazz Ensemble most memorablemoments have been. Wiskirchen'sone regret is that there isn't enough time to accomplisheverything he wants to because jazz 9:45 Universityof MichiganCombo band is an extracurricular at NotreDame and only meets once a week. "Mymotto is 'Ars longa, vita brevis,'" Wiskirchensaid. The phrase is Latinfor "Artis long, life is brief." 10:30Western Michigan Jazz Orchestra "There just isn't enough time to explore, to do all the stuff I want to do," he said. "There's never enough time to get done what you want to get done." "Andthat's about the size of that," Wiskirchenobserved.
