First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers Into the Library
School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Department of Information Studies Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers into the Library Clare Snowball This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University of Technology March 2011 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: _____________________________ Date: _________________________________ Page i Abstract This thesis investigates the inclusion of graphic novels in library collections and whether the format encourages teenagers to use libraries and read in their free time. Graphic novels are bound paperback or hardcover works in comic-book form and cover the full range of fiction genres, manga (Japanese comics), and also nonfiction. Teenagers are believed to read less in their free time than their younger counterparts. The importance of recreational reading necessitates methods to encourage teenagers to enjoy reading and undertake the pastime. Graphic novels have been discussed as a popular format among teenagers. As with reading, library use among teenagers declines as they age from childhood. The combination of graphic novel collections in school and public libraries may be a solution to both these dilemmas. Teenagers’ views were explored through focus groups to determine their attitudes toward reading, libraries and their use of libraries; their opinions on reading for school, including reading for English classes and gathering information for school assignments; and their liking for different reading materials, including graphic novels.

  • Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See About the book… A language kept a secret for a thousand years forms the backdrop for the remarkable novel of two Chinese women whose friendship and love sustains them through their lives. This unforgettable novel takes place in nineteenth-century China when girls had their feet bound and lived in almost total seclusion. Some girls were paired as “old-sames” in emotional matches that lasted all of their lives. The women in one remote county developed their own secret code for communication: nu shu (“women’s writing”). They painted letters on fans, embroidered messages on handkerchiefs, and composed stories in hopes of sharing their dreams and accomplishments. An old woman reflects on her relationship with her “old-same”, their arranged marriages, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood—until a terrible misunderstanding written on their secret fan threatens to tear them apart. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan delves into one of the most mysterious and treasured relationships of all time—female friendship. About the author… Lisa See was born February 18, 1955 in Paris, France. She is the author of Flower Net (an Edgar Award nominee), The Interior, and Dragon Bones, as well as the critically acclaimed memoir On Gold Mountain. The Organization of Chinese American Women named her the 2001 National Woman of the Year. She lives in Los Angeles. Discussion Questions: 1. In your opinion, is Lily, who is the narrator, the heroine or the villain? What are her flaws and her strengths? 2. Do you think the concept of “old-sames” exists today? Do you have and “old-same,” or are you part of a sworn sisterhood? In what ways are those relationships similar or different from the ones in nineteenth-century China? 3.
