T ANNUAL REPORT 1971 -2 I have pleasure in presenting the Fortieth Annual Report of Adelaide Turf Cricket Association Incorporated. It is a record of a season in which our Association continued to expand, while the standard of cricket played under its control produced interesting games despite the unusually wet season. The Tuif Association had in excess of 100 teams and, it is with nostalgia that I look back over the years that I have been your secretary. The first report of this style was undertaken in 1961, and a point stressed then was, 'a closer liaison between the S.A.C.A. and A.T.C.A. regarding the promotion of cricket'. The A.T.C.A. for the past two years has had a delegate (without voting power) on the S.A.C.A. cricket committee, and I feel sure this has helped both Associations to appreciate the efforts of each other in the promotion of the game. The A.T.C.A. members were very disappointed that the S.A.C.A. ground and finance committee saw fit to refuse the S.A.C.A. cricket committee's recommendation that the A.T.C.A. be given full delegate rights. Members must remember that the Adelaide Turf, as the largest Turf Association in S.A., must cooperate with the S.A.C.A., in fact all associations, for the concrete benefit of all cricket. The association continued the Inter -Association game with the Victorian Sub -District C.A., participated in the Gillette Cup Competition, and also played a one -day game against the New Zealand Waikato Touring Side. All these Inter- Association games must help to increase the interest and standard of our cricket. A full report of the games is included in this report. The Association commenced a Junior Colts Saturday Morning Competition, and this competition should be even stronger this coming season, after a few minor problems that can be remedied in the coming season. This grade should be an opportunity for juniors to play good competitive cricket, as they unfortun- ately are not playing at school. The Cricket Union of S.A. invited the A.T.C.A. to compete in the Under 13 Inter- Association competition for the Geo. Dickinson Shield, and I have pleasure in advising that the lads won this shield. Full details are included in this report. The finals are usually the important part for any team, and it is not the usual practise to itemize any particular grade or individual. But I feel sure all members of this Association congratulate Bob Marrett, of Payneham Al, for the outstanding bowling performance in their final; a hat trick in his first over, then finished with the whole ten . Truly a remarkable performance. Congratulations Bob. The Adelaide Turf is indebted to all business houses who helped in spon- soring, and subsidised our official programme, and we thank the Commonwealth Banking Organization, Rowe and Jarman Sports Store, South British Insurance Co, Beaurepaire Tyre Service, S.A. Brewing Co and Fullers Directory for their assistance.

General Administration As most members are aware the association will again this season have in excess of 100 teams, and while officials are pleased with this continued growth and the enthusiasm to play turf cricket, it must be fully realised that this urge to play turf cricket has caused many problems in administration. Remembering the association is run on a honorary basis and bearing in mind these added problems, the Executive Committee submitted a reconstructive administrative pattern. This system was accepted by the Management Commit- tee after a few minor alterations, resulting in a system where your Executive Committee will have the full responsibility of promoting and managing the Asso- ciation. This will necessitate the full cooperation and support of all clubs.

3 Management Committee meetings were held regularly during the season, and the following dubs were absent on:

1971 SEPT 13, A.G.M. Adelaide, Edwardstown, P.O.S., Myer, Grenfell Mail. OCT 4, Elders -GM, S.P.O.C., Tubemakers. NOV 1, Elizabeth D.st, K.O.C.A., Myer, P.O.S. DEC 6, Elders -GM, Flinders Uni., Myer, Old Ignatians, Woodville North. 1972 FEB 7, Flinders Uni., Para Hills, S.H.O.C., W.R.E.I. FEB 28 Flinders Uni., Myer, Para Hills, P.O.S. MARCH 27 Bank of Adelaide, Commonwealth Bank, East Torrens, F1:nders Uni., Glenelg, Myer, Old Ignatians, Old Scotch, P.O.S., Prospect, S.H.O.C.

I would like to thank all the hard working officials of the Association for their continued assistance and service during the season. The Association is indebted to: the President, Mr A. T. Marlow; the Chairman, Mr D. T. Bartlett; the Treasurer, Mr J. W. Hull; the Assistant Secretary, Mr G. T. Goulter; Acting Treasurer, Mr C. W. Britton; the Hon. Auditors, Messrs Thomas, Sara, Macklin and Co.; The Publicity Officer, Mr S. W. Wellington; members of the Executive Committee, Mr K. J. Duke, Mr M. J. Doley, Mr N. W. Jones, Mr D. O. Richard- son, Mr L. B. Taylor, Mr J. M. Paech, Mr R. A. Vianello, who all played an important part in management of the Association.

Sub -Committees

The Turf Association have been fortunate over the seasons, to have so many competent members prepared to assist on various sub -committees. The Association is indebted to the following members who have played their part in our complex administration. Oval: Messrs Eric Baker, Norm Jones, Bob Ewens, Keith Duke; Permit: Messrs Chas Britton, Malcolm Doley, Rob Cole, Ken Berndt; Selection: Messrs Don Hackett, Jack Hull, John Younger; Umpires: Messrs John Carne, Gerry Coulter, Horrie Ryan, Gordon Ruston; Finance: Messrs Jack Hull, Bill Ewing, Don Young, Don Hackett. The Association Executive Committee is naturally the most important com- mittee, and surely next season will be expected to have a more important role to perform. The Executive met on ten occasions during the season and attendances were as follows: Messrs D. T. Bartlett 9, G. L. Hayman 10, J. W. Hull 8, J. M. Paech 9, L. B. Taylor 8, N. W. Jones 9, C. W. Britton 9, G. T. Goulter 10, M. J. Doley 8, K. J. Duke 6, R. A. Vianello 8, D, O. Richardson 8. Members should appreciate the assistance given to the Association by all these officials, so that players can enjoy pleasant and competitive cricket. As I have mentioned, the Association will be managed by the newly accepted administration pattern, but probably very few realise the number of hours the Administration Sub -Committee gave in the past two years formulating and revising the Constitution and Rules. The Association owes a debt of gratitude to this sub -committee: Messrs Don Bartlett, Jack Hull, Jeff Pywell and Michael Paech. The Association has many varied forms for clubs to fill in and few realise the importance of these to the Administration. Punctuality and clarity eases the burden of officials, and probably the clubs' treasurers' accounts. So during the coming seasons we look for 100 per cent effort and support from clubs.

4 New Admissions The Adelaide Turf admitted ten new teams to the competition in season 1971 -72, and we congratulate clubs on their efforts in promotion of turf cricket. New clubs admitted were Walkerville (Grade A7), Para Hills (A8), while Elizabeth District (A8), S.H.O.C. (A8), Savings Bank of S.A. (A8), Flinders Uni (A8), Payneham (A9), Royal Park (A9), Kilburn (A9) and Grenfell Mail (A9) fielded extra sides. The report shows their success, and we look for further progress and cooperation in the new season.

Umpires Association The Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires' Association continues to play an important part in our progress. The past season, under Mr Gordon Ruxton as coach, showed that umpires in general did strive to raise the standard of umpiring, and we all look rather optimistically for continued improvement. The Association is indebted to Gordon Ruxton for his effort as coach, and trust that the general improvement in umpiring will compensate for the time and effort given during the season. The committee and Messrs John Carne, President, Morrie Ryan, Chairman, Hedley Norsworthy, Hon. Secretary, Alan Cannell, Minte Secretary, continued their good work, and it is very important that the both Associations work closely together for the general improvement of cricket. The A.T.C.U.A. Shield donated for competition in Grade A8 was won by Para Hills (Gold Section) and Adelaide (Green Section), and Premiership certificates were presented to the clubs by the Umpire's Association President, Mr John Carne. The umpires held a social at the completion of the season, and from the response by members this will be repeated in the coming season. Mr Max O'Connell kindly consented to be guest speaker for this evening, and we thank Max for his support and assistance. It is with regret and sadness I report the death of one of the umpires, Mr Jack Wordley. The late Jack Wordley, an Honorary Life Member of A.T.C.U.A., was one of our earlier umpires, and we extend our sympathy to his family in their sad loss.

Inter -Association Games The A.T.C.A. were guests of the Victorian Sub -District Cricket Association during the Christmas period, and played a match at Brighton Oval. As the scores indicate, the V.S.D.C.A. were a far better s'de and we extend our congrat- ulations to John Harmer and his team. The host club, Brighton Cricket Club, provided excellent oval facilities and amenities for this game and our special thanks to all concerned in making the visit so pleasant. The V.S.D.C.A. won the toss and batted on a perfect , and at the end of the first day, compulsory closure, declared at seven wickets for 322, with W. King making a very sound 107. Bob Marrett's effort of 5/118 off 33 overs was A.T.C.A.'s most outstanding of the game. The A.T.C.A. team was quietly confident that they could make the runs, but an early collapse and the game was over. Full marks to John Salvado for his 4/36 from 16 overs. The A.T.C.A. 0 /105 in the second innings, should have been in the first effort, but not to be, and full congratulations to V.S.D.C.A. The turf side had quite a number of young players and it is hoped that they will all gain experience from this game. I would like to thank John Younger, captain, Gerry Goulter, scorer, and Mike Paech for their help on the trip.

5 A trophy donated by the Turf Association was presented to Billy King for his performance as the best for V.S.D.C.A. Full match details of game are included in this report.

Gillette Cup Competition The S.A. Cricket Association in conjunction with Gillette Australia Pty Ltd, invited the A.T.C.A. to compete in this competition, and the Turf Association played East Torrens in a semi -final, at Woodville Oval. East Torrens easily defeated the A.T.C.A. side and a full report of the match is included in this report. The Association congratulate East Torrens, and thank Woodville Cricket Club for a very good wicket. The Association is indebted to S.A.C.A. and the Gillette company for the opportunity to play in this competition and look to the coming season with the hope of perhaps a successful game.

Waikato Touring Team

The A.T.C.A. played a one -day game against the touring Waikato team and won an interesting game. Results are included in this report. The Waikato, New Zealand, Tourists played a series of matches in South Australia, and we thank the organizers Messrs 7 om Harry and Bob Waters for the opportunity to play this New Zealand team. To make any game of this nature a success, the Association needs the support of clubs, members and above all the ladies. I would Eke to thank all who helped to make this game a success. I must extend a special thanks to the committee of S.P.O.C. Cricket Club for their generous use of oval and facilities, that made this game such a success. As the manager of the games, I would like to think that the Association, one day, will have all members keen to represent their Association.

Publicity

The Adelaide Turf over the past years has worked for the establishment of a solid publicity coverage of our Association affairs and results. To the many people over these past fourteen seasons who have contributed to this important aspect of our Association, we as a whole, owe a debt of gratitude.

Gratitude The past two seasons the Association has been fortunate to have Steve Wel- lington to carry on this very important position, and his liaison of press and radio coverage, carried out very efficiently and successfully, is very much appre- ciated. Many thanks Steve, and trust you have gained some consolation and enjoy- ment in the success you have achieved. The Sunday Mail again gave the Association splendid coverage of results of all grades, and naturally is appreciated by the large following of 120 teams. Our thanks to Mr David Capell, Sporting Editor, and staff of the Sunday Mail. The sponsored session on Radio 5AD is still proving a very popular session with all clubs. This session is made possible by the courtesy of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation who sponsor this Saturday even.ng session. The Executive and A.T.C.A. members thank them for their continued support. To Messrs Murray Tippett and Tony Pilkington of Radio 5AD our thanks for the cooperation and help.

6 The Association is also indebted to Mr Jim Miers for his work, in respect to the sponsoring. The News and Advertiser through their sporting editors, Messrs Geoff Roach and Mery Agars, and staff gave the many supporters adequate information on the affairs of the Association. Mr Malcolm McDonald of A.B.C. we also thank for the interest and coverage of our Association affairs. A few calculations will establish the work that has been achieved by the publicity officer, and on behalf of all Association members, I thank Steve Wellington for his part in our progress. All who played some part in our drive to be recognized as an important cog in the promotion and improvement of cricket: to clubs, editors, sporting writers, announcers and all individuals of A.T.C.A., our sincere thanks.

Social Affairs The social side of the Association is fast becoming an established section of Association affairs, and the evenings held during the season are very encour- aging to the Executive. The Association dinner again was held at the Tonsley Hotel, and a record number of both past and present members had a very enjoyable evening. The Adelaide Turf was again fortunate to have Sir Donald Bradman as our special guest, and during the evening he presented Mr Harold Walker, of Myer Cricket Club, with his Player Life Member certificate. We thank Sir Donald for his interest in this association. Mr Terry Jenner was our guest speaker, and we thank Terry for his interest- ing talk. The annual Presentation Social was again held at the Sturt Club, and a crowd in excess of 200 attended, and all shields and trophies were presented. This social is becoming a problem, as our numbers outgrow the capacity of various venues, A good problem though? Messrs Les Favell, special guest Mery Powell, John Carne, Life Members, Keith Duke (Vice -Chairman) and Jeff Pywell (donor A9 Shield) all played an important part in the success of the presentations, and we thank them for their interest. The following list of Premiers and Trophy winners, and the various donors, indicate the growth and interest in Adelaide Turf. To the successful clubs, captains and committees we as an Association extend our congratulations, and also thank the donors for their interest. A Junior Colts Social was held at the Amateur Football House, and with over 100 lads plus parents and managers attending, resulted in a successful evening. Special guests Messrs Barry Jarman and John Causby spoke and pre- sented trophies, and we are grateful and appreciative of their interest. The `Harold Camp' Shield was presented to Grange Navy team, premiers, by the A.T.C.A. chairman, Mr Don Bartlett, who also spoke of the great work that the late Mr Harold Camp had achieved for Junior Cricket. The Grange Cricket Club donated the shield in recognition of Harold's effort for the Grange Cricket Club and the Juniors in the district. The Junior Colt grade should continue to expand as clubs find the benefit of this grade. To help eliminate the age gap between the junior and our normal grades, the Association proposes to start a Senior Colts grade for lads under the age of 16 on 1st October.

Trophies The following trophies were presented: Harold Camp Shield: Grange (Navy), K. Matthews, Captain; Batting: (W. Ewing Trophy) B. Freeman, Sturt; Bowling: (E. Powell Trophy) P. Myers,

7 Grange (Blue). Special Trophies: (A. Marlow Trophy) A. White, Grange (Navy); (N. Keen Trophy) B. Harrison, Woodville; (E. Norman Trophy) R. Manuel, Woodville. The Association congratulates all trophy winners and thanks the donors for their support. The list of trophy donors is a true indication of interest shown by some of the past and present stalwarts of Adelaide Turf. The Execu- tive Committee will be pleased to receive offers of trophies for the Colt Grades. If we are to really foster Turf cricket then surely we have a duty to the young up- and -coming cricketers. If we fail in the effort to help, encouurage and teach them, then surely we fail in our duty to the game.

The report shows the A2 bowling aggregate as the 'Dick Hodge Trophy', and perhaps an explanation for the new clubs may help all to appreciate this trophy.

8 Dick Hode, a 50 plus year old `youngster' played A2 cricket for Elders -GM, and in his seven seasons recorded the amazing figures of 603 wickets at an average of 9.8. Dick still holds the Association record of 107 wickets at 9.2 average.

Membership Following the creation of player life membership, and the granting of certifi- cates to recognise 15 years playing membership of the Association, we find that a total of 75 have qualified this honor. It has always been the earnest desire of the Executive to foster the contact between members and the officers of the Association, and with the steady increase of player life and full members, this desire has been fulfilled, as a check through the memberships and the various sub -committees indicate. Messrs J. M. Paech, S.P.O.C.; N. W. Keen, Colonel Light Gardens; M. J. Doley, A. M. Olsson, P.A.O.C.; R. J. Tiver, K. G. Hammond, J. E. Foote, Railway; have all qualified for player life membership and will be presented with certificates in the coming season.

Obituary It is with profound regret that we record the death of Mr George Manuel. The late George Manuel, an honorary member, donor of Grade A2 Shield, was a popular and interested member of our Association, and prior to his death was honored by Her Majesty in the New Year Honours. We extend to his family our deepest sorrow in their sad loss.

Conclusion The Association continues to become more popular each season, with appli- cations from established hard wicket, and also newly formed clubs, all with the ambition to play Turf Cricket. This coming season we have applications from 16 new teams. This upsurge of interest in Turf cricket, plus the provision of Colt grades, will give officials many more problems, but the new administration pattern will be an advantage to control and solve the problems quicker and more efficiently. The main project this season must surely be to consolidate and promote the Junior Grades. The Executive Committee will give favorable consideration to any affiliated club who should wish to sponsor a primary school team in the Junior Colt grade. Enthusiasm for this grade of cricket is at an all time high, but unfortunately standards in all grades are not high. Surely then, there is an urgent need for all cricket administrators and enthusiasts to do some little extra for the benefit of the game. Junior coaching schools held for number of years, which had to be discon- tinued in the past two seasons through lack of wickets available, have had very satisfying results. As we look through S.A.C.A. District teams many names come to mind as Juniors who received coaching by the Turf panel, but the most satisfying was the selection of Jeff Hammond for the tour of England. Jeff attended the classes as a Junior, and we wish him a most satisfying tour. Members may find interesl'ng that Ian Chappell also played Turf Cricket in his early days of cricket. Many of the older members can recall Ian playing with his father, Martin Chappell. Naturally our best wishes are with Ian and his team in their quest for . As we look back over the years we realise the growth of this Association is a tribute to all the hard working club officials, and this is noticeable in the number of multiple teams that are affiliated at present.

9 I think it is worth mentioning that the present chairman, Don Bartlett, and I came into office in 1957 -58 with a total of 32 teams (today 124) and a few extras that have been achieved while Don has been chairman of the Execu- tive indicate some of the growth: Annual Report (as presented), Association Constitution, Association By -Laws, comprehensive publicity coverage, listening delegate on S.A.C.A. Cricket Committee, sponsored radio session, copies of Minutes and Circulars to all clubs, formation of Player Life and Full Member- ship, Certificates for Premiership and Player Life, Regular Inter -State games, participation in Gillette Cup competition, Colts cricket, coaching classes, regular Executive Committee meetings, annual dinner and presentation social, Associa- tion caps and ties, revised administration control, recognition by S.A.C.A. Cricket Committee. All these have been accomplished without interference to the promotion of the club games, but let us not forget all who sat on various sub -committees to help formulate these added facilities. Season 1972 -73 will no doubt be a record year with the additions of new teams, and to all members I wish a happy season. Now we have developed to this stage, let us not procrastinate, but surely work for the benefit of Turf Cricket. In the general routine of organizing the large number of teams during busy seasons, it is fairly important to the members not to overlook the important target which we set ourselves in 1961. I refer to the establishment of our own Association Headquarters, referred in our balance sheet as oval development.

Appreciation In addition to the acknowledgements made in this report I wish to record the gratitude of members and myself to: the President, Vice -Presidents, Honorary Life, Honorary Player Life and Full Members, for their interest. The Chairman and all members of the Executive Committee, and Chas Britton as Acting Treasurer while Jack Hull is overseas, for their activities. Messrs Darby Munn, Neil Blundell and staff of S.A.C.A. for their courteous assistance. Mr Lindsay Taylor for his assistance as Minute Secretary. Messrs Jack Hull, Chas Britton, Mike Paech and Gerry Goutter for their assistance in copying minutes and circulars. The Auditors, Messrs Thomas, Sara, Macklin & Co, and particularly Mr Bruce Edwards and his staff. To all who made the Inter -Association games so successful with their assistance and cooperation. V.S.D.C.A. officials, Brighton Cricket Club, Melbourne Cricket Club, and Mr Geo Hele for the visit to M.C.C. Cricket Museum. Messrs Don Bartlett, Jack Hull, Jeff Pywell, Mike Paech for their work on administration sub -committee. Mr John Guy for his help with the Association Certificates. All wives and friends of our officials for their tolerance and understanding. Mr Doug Richardson for his assistance to Steve Wellington. My employers, Messrs Ron and Treth Muggleton for their continued consideration. Mr Gordon Ruxton for his effort as A.T.C.U.A. coach. All clubs and committees for the use of grounds and facilities for our major rounds. Finally to my wife, for without her help and cooperation to the Association and myself, I would be unable to continue as Secretary.

G. L. HAYMAN, Adelaide, 31st July, 1972 Honorary Secretary

10 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Once again it is my pleasure on behalf of the Executive Committee to mention some of the highlights of the past cricketing season and our hopes for the future. We are looking forward to an exciting year with many new teams with turf wickets applying for affiliation. The administration this year has been streamlined to cope with our many problems associated with a rapidly expanding Association. All clubs have the opportunity to nominate delegates or members to our 10 man executive and for positions as office bearers of the Association. The Executive has been increased to enable clubs to have more opportunities to elect members and only the Secretary and Treasurer will automatically be added to the 10 man Executive. Keen and capable administrators are required from the clubs to help run the Association smoothly with the additional duties under the new by -laws. Last season a very successful colts competition was played on Saturday mornings. We will be expanding these activities this season and a special sub- committee has already had two meetings with the Junior Union of S.A. The S.A.C.A. has again included our State side in the Gillette Cup semi- finals and another interstate match with the V.S.D.C.A. is assured with the possibility of an under 23 junior team playing locally or interstate. The willingness of club officials to prepare their ovals for the final series was again appreciated. Edwardstown facilities and assistance made the Al grand final a great success. Special thanks to the ladies committee for providing afternoon tea on both Saturdays. As the Association expands the same honorary office bearers accept cheerfully the added responsibilities thrust upon them. Gordon Hayman with Mrs Hayman's help continues to give magnificent service to the executive, delegates and players. Cricket is Gordon's life and the Association owes him a tremendous debt of gratitude for the cheerful way he handles the many complex problems on our behalf. Gerry Goulter is a very capable assistant for Gordon and journeys down from Elizabeth for all our meetings. Steve Wellington again was a very energetic publicity officer. Jack Hull a very experienced executive member over a long period was again treasurer and by Massie's performances in England Jack while on long service leave has obviously caught up with the Australian fast bowler and been most helpful. The Association is greatly indebted to Gordon's employers, Ron and Treth Muggleton. They are very keen sportsmen and have always shown a lot of interest in our activities. The 1971 -72 season promises to be another great cricketing year for our Association. While wishing all - players and officials -a successful and enjoyable summer I would remind all club administrators to study the new by -laws care- fully and assist the executive to make the streamlining of Association operations a success. TREASURER'S REPORT It is regretted that this year we must report a deficit of $61. While the deficit is reported as $61 it must also be realised that an amount of $300 was transferred from our Provision for Touring Expenses to assist in offsetting the cost of $692 in sending our Association team to Melbourne. It has been apparent in recent seasons that rising costs have been catching up on us and this situation culminated during the 1971 -72 season. Although the financial position of the Association is sound, it can only remain so if we continue to at least meet our expenses from income received from season to season, and in fact, if the Association is to continue to progress and proceed with development plans, we must be able to set aside amounts into our Provision accounts. It therefore appears that for the first time for 6 years it will be necessary for fees to be increased for the ensuing season. I submit this report as Acting Treasurer over the last 3 months, during the absence overseas of our Honorary Treasurer, Jack Hill. C. W. Britten, Acting Honorary Treasurer
