Specifically, it focusses on the month spent at Nootka Sound (on the west coast of Vancouver Island) in 1778. The textual discrepancies between the official 1784 edition by Bishop Douglas, A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, and J.C. Beaglehole’ s scholarly edition of 1967, The Voyage of the Resolution and Discovery 1776-1780, reveal that Cook’s Voyages present not an archive of European scientific and historical knowledge about the new world but the deployment of colonial discourses. Examining this relatively specific moment as discourse expands a critical sense of the importance of Cook’s Voyages as cultural documents, for the twentieth century as well as for the eighteenth. Chapters One and Two consider the mutually interdependent discourses of aesthetics and science: based upon assumptions of “objectivity,’ they distance the observing subject from the object observed, in time as well as in space. Chapter Three traces the development of the trope of cannibalism and argues that this trope works in the editions of Cook’s third voyage to further distance the Nootka from Europeans by textually establishing what looked like savagery. Chapter Four examines the historical construction of Cook as imperial culture hero, for eighteenth-century England, Western Europe, and the settler cultures that followed in his wake. Taken separately and together, these colonial discourses are employed in the accounts of Cook’s month at Nootka Sound to justify and rationalise England’s claim to appropriation of the territory. The purpose of these colonial discourses is to fix meaning and to present themselves as natural; the purpose of my dissertation is to disrupt such constructions. I therefore disrupt my own discourse with a series of digressions, signalled by a different typeface. They allow me to pursue lines of thought related tangentially to the main arguments and thus to investigate the wider concerns of the culture that produced Cook’s voyages, They also give me the opportunity to interrogate my own critical methodology and assumptions.     The Many Deaths of Captain Cook A Study in Metropolitan Mass Culture, 1780-1810 Ruth Scobie PhD University of York Department of English April 2013 i Ruth Scobie The Many Deaths of Captain Cook Abstract This thesis traces metropolitan representations, between 1780 and 1810, of the violent death of Captain James Cook at Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii. It takes an interdisciplinary approach to these representations, in order to show how the interlinked texts of a nascent commercial culture initiated the creation of a colonial character, identified by Epeli Hau’ofa as the looming “ghost of Captain Cook.” The introduction sets out the circumstances of Cook’s death and existing metropolitan reputation in 1779. It situates the figure of Cook within contemporary mechanisms of ‘celebrity,’ related to notions of mass metropolitan culture. It argues that previous accounts of Cook’s fame have tended to overemphasise the immediacy and unanimity with which the dead Cook was adopted as an imperialist hero; with the result that the role of the scene within colonialist histories can appear inevitable, even natural. In response, I show that a contested mythology around Cook’s death was gradually constructed over the three decades after the incident took place, and was the contingent product of a range of texts, places, events, and individuals. The first section examines responses to the news of Cook’s death in January 1780, focusing on the way that the story was mediated by, first, its status as ‘news,’ created by newspapers; and second, the effects on Londoners of the Gordon riots in June of the same year.

    Illustrations SAMOA Early European views… In relation to the encounters with Samoans, no drawing was made (or survived) from the Bougainville expedition or from the Lapérouse expedition. For the official and posthumous publication of the Lapérouse expedition narrative (1797), only the `Massacre' was drawn and engraved by Parisian artists (in a style which departed from the 1770-1790s' `noble' representations of Tahitians; see pictures in the section on Tahiti). This view went right through into the German colonial period: the 1797 French engraving was reproduced or redrawn many times, as in this case (pl. 2) for a German account of Samoa. The author, formerly Supreme Judge of `German Samoa', has compared on two adjacent pages what he called in his captions the `Samoan raid on the French' (pl. 2) and the `Hawaiian murder of Captain Cook' (pl. 4). 211 ‘First Contacts’ in Polynesia … and colonial times In 1883, the French had elevated on the site a monument stating that their marines gave their life `for science and for their country'. It is in another German colonial book of 1902 that the picture of this French statement found a place (pl. 3).     The Persistent Potato We did not know about this tasty potato until we moved to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Now it is established in our garden where the plants produce small, slender, and somewhat gnarled, pale, yellow potatoes. They are especially delicious when roasted and keep well throughout the winter in our cool garage. Flavorful Ozette fingerling potato INTRODUCTION In recent years, eighteenth century Spanish sailing incursions into the inland seas of the Pacific Northwest have been the subject of increased scholarly research, but in the past little if anything was taught in schools about the presence of Spanish ships north of the 45th parallel. Even fewer in-depth studies were made of the cultures of the people who had for thousands of years made the rim of the north Pacific their home. In hindsight, the impact of the European newcomers, initially few in number, was far-ranging, not only for its political intrigues and influence on the lives of the local indigenous people, but in a very practical way. The Spanish came not so much for conquest (except for that which involved competition for land with their European and American counterparts) but rather for trade. However, this primary objective implied a secondary one — permanence. Land-based occupation, whether with permission or not, was part of the Spanish intent, as they sought to extend their nation’s presence north of their California base. For both the purpose of trade, as well as the option of establishing enduring settlements as directed by their King, the Spanish brought provisions that could support more than a season or two in the northern latitudes.

    THINK AHEAD 2011-2012 Annual Report To the Case Western Reserve Community: Ours is a campus full of people driven to make a difference. Whether pursuing a cure for Alzheimer’s or prosecuting pirates on the high seas, our faculty, staff, and students strive for impact. They translate discoveries about nature into state-of- the-art technology. They turn insights about oral health into answers to orthopedic issues. They even use irritation about a common car problem as fuel for a promising product. Are we dreamers? Absolutely. But at Case Western Reserve, aspirations are only the start. Then come questions: How can we make this concept work? What tweaks will take it farther? What improvements can we add? As Gmail inventor Paul Buchheit (’98) told our 2012 graduates, the correct path may not be the one everyone else identifies. Sometimes the answer involves forging through unfamiliar trails. In such instances, the key is not only to listen to instincts, but follow them. In 2011-2012, that spirit spurred Celia Weatherhead to announce that she and her late husband, Albert, had committed $50 million to our university to advance management education and community health. It led an anonymous donor to commit $20 million for our programs in the natural sciences. And it prompted trustee Larry Sears and his wife, Sally Zlotnik Sears, to contribute $5 million to think[box], a campus initiative to encourage entrepreneurial innovation. Such support inspires us all. It also helps attract still more like-minded achievers. The undergraduate class we admitted this spring represents the largest, most diverse and most academically accomplished in our university’s history.
