Home to the impressive mountain range of the Julian and beautiful , one of the largest national reserves in Europe, this is the ideal destination for an epic adventure mini-break.

Immerse yourself in the visually spectacular world of pristine mountains and snowcapped peaks to ascend the rocky centrepiece, Mt Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak at 2864m. The climb to the summit is outstanding and excitingly airy along a breath-taking trail which offers some brilliant scrambling and sections of via ferrata. You will be rewarded with incredible panoramic views from the summit across the and as far as neighbouring , and Croatia.

Its name ‘tri-glav’ means ‘three-headed’, due to its three-peak shape. This rocky mountain giant is steeped in tradition and is Slovenia’s national symbol. It appears on the country’s coat of arms and on the flag itself. Climbing Triglav is something of a Slovenian tradition and akin to a patriotic rite of passage. On reaching the summit it’s also very likely that you will witness the traditional for first time ascendees of receiving a thwack on the buttocks from a birch branch, or in its absence a climbing rope, which is just one of the many quirky features that makes this mountain adventure so unique and memorable.

This vast landscape of mountain peaks, thick forests, postcard-perfect lakes and blue-green rivers is the perfect setting for multitude of adventures right on your doorstep.

Mt Triglav Trek Overview This action-packed adventure will immerse you in the majestic scenery and quirky traditions of the Julian Alps, introduce you to via ferrata and alpine scrambling and see you summiting the highest peak in Slovenia, Mt Triglav, and all in just 3 days.

This fantastic trekking adventure takes you on a spectacular journey across the Julian Alps of Slovenia to the summit of Mt Triglav, an offshoot of the . Straddling Italy and Slovenia the incredible Julian Alps offers some of the most impressive mountain scenery in Europe including Triglav National Park which is home to alpine pastures, pine forests, clear streams, crystal lakes, mountain huts and a rich variety of jaw-dropping trails. From the lakeside fairy-tale gem of Bled you will be transferred via magnificent tracks cutting through the forests, following a wild river to the start of your trek in the in Triglav National Park. Starting your trek through picturesque alpine meadows and forests before rising above onto a high plateau with breath-taking views. Then it’s on to the shoulders of Triglav and the Triglavski hut at 2,515 metres. This is the highest mountain hut in Slovenia with the highest meteorological station in the country. From here the route to the top is outstanding and excitingly airy as you follow an exhilarating trail of a 400-metre ascent of a via ferrata to the summit climbing a series of cables and ladders. The view from the summit is described as one of the most sublime among the Alps as Triglav is considerably higher than other high Julian Alps peaks so you’ll be rewarded with an extensive panorama across the Julian Alps, Italy and Austria.

You’ll then descend this rocky giant and have the option to either be transferred to Airport for your return flight to the UK or to extend your stay in this fantastic adventure playground.

ITINERARY MT TRIGLAV SLOVENIA WEEKEND ADVENTURE ______

DAY 1 Flight from UK to Ljubljana Slovenia 30min transfer from the airport to Lake Bled Free time to explore Lake Bled On your arrival into Ljubljana Airport on the recommended Adventurous Ewe flight time, you will be met with a transfer to take you from the airport to your accommodation in Lake Bled. You are also welcome to arrive earlier into Ljubljana if you wish as there are taxi transfers available to Lake Bled giving you more time to explore this fairy-tale gem of place.

You will be transferred by minibus from Ljubljana Airport to your hostel at Lake Bled. This transfer will take approximately 30 minutes. On arrival you will have time to get to know your fellow team-mates, make final preparations for your trek and explore this well-renowned picture- postcard wonderland with its natural beauty and wealth of legends. Bled’s bluish-green alpine lake, iconic church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff, some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke as backdrops, Bled is an ideal place to begin your discovery of the natural beauty of Slovenia.

DAY 2 Transfer from Bled to Krma Valley and trek to Triglavski Dom (2515m) Following breakfast, you’ll meet your IFMGA Guide and take a scenic 1 hour drive via magnificent tracks cutting through the forests, following a wild river to the start of your trek to the start of the trek in the Krma Valley in Triglav National Park. The start of your mountain adventure will see you trekking through picturesque alpine meadows and forests before rising above onto a high plateau with breath-taking views. Then it’s on to the shoulders of Triglav and the Triglavski hut at 2,515 metres. This is the highest mountain hut in Slovenia with the highest meteorological station in the country. Triglavski Dom is one of the most welcoming huts in the park with its dramatic setting where you can relax with a hot drink and enjoy the views, or explore the area and find a nice vantage point for sunset.

Your Guide will decide whether or not you will attempt the summit climb of Triglav in the afternoon or early the following morning which is mainly down to conditions. If your summit attempt is scheduled for the following morning, that afternoon is a great chance to relax, meet some other trekkers from all over the world and enjoy some truly remarkable mountain views from this fantastic location.

ITINERARY MT TRIGLAV SLOVENIA WEEKEND ADVENTURE ______

DAY 3 Triglavski Dom to Triglav summit, return transfer to Ljubljana Airport This morning, make sure you set your alarm early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Julian Alps as the mountains glow orange when the sun’s early morning rays reach their rocky peaks.

If you are still to make your summit bid, you will set off in teams under the glow of the early morning sun. Leaving your day-packs at the hut you can travel light on your final 400 metre ascent along the East Ridge. The route is outstanding and excitingly airy as you follow an exhilarating trail of via ferrata to the summit climbing a series of cables and ladders. This means you will be wearing a harness which is attached to the fixed ropes known as Via Ferrata. The experienced Guide will be on hand to offer help and support. The scrambling is excellent alongside a breath-taking mountain setting and stunning views. You’ll be focused on the ridge and the climb over Mali Triglav (little Triglav) so the two hours to the summit will pass quickly and before you know it, you’ll be stood on the highest point in Slovenia. The 360 degree views from the top are simply jaw-dropping and include the vast display of the Julian Alps whilst the valleys of , Krma, Vrata and spread out below. You will also see the neighbouring peaks in Austria and Italy. After taking in the views and the all-important summit photos you will return to the Triglavski Dom mountain hut for lunch.

In the afternoon, you descend through alpine forests into alpine meadows famous for their summer pastures. Cattle are herded to these mountain pastures at the end of June where they graze for at least two months. As you near the end of your trek it’s your last chance to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Julian Alps. Arriving back Krma Valley you will be transferred to Ljubljana Airport for your return flight to the UK full of an incredible sense of achievement and many stories to be shared.

PASSPORT All nationalities require a full passport that must be valid for 3 months beyond the intended length of stay. Airlines may not carry passengers holding passports with less than 3 months validity.

VISA British nationals do not require a visa to enter Slovenia for the purpose of tourism. INSURANCE It is a condition of travelling with Adventurous Ewe that you have a suitable travel insurance policy which covers you for your entire expedition. Please ensure your policy covers, among other things, medical (emergency, evacuation and repatriation) arrangements, cancellation and curtailment of the trip, and more specifically for the adventurous activities undertaken on this trekking challenge. You must send your Travel Insurance Policy to Adventurous Ewe no less than one month prior to departure.

VACCINATIONS There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for Slovenia.

For the most up to date information on vaccinations, please consult with your GP or travel healthcare practitioner 8 weeks in advance of travel. For up to date vaccination information please check the latest health advice for Slovenia from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website.

Apart from the recent COVID-19 pandemic there are no other health risks in Slovenia. We are monitoring and activating the guidelines and recommendations put in place by the respective governments and World Health Organisation as a result of COVID-19. You will receive our operational guidelines for this expedition when you join the trip and hand sanitiser and face masks will be provided for travel. Rest assured your safety and wellbeing is our top priority at all times.

SAFETY AND WELLBEING Adventurous Ewe puts the safety and wellbeing of you, our leaders & crew and the communities we visit at the centre of all our operations, always. The Mt Triglav Trek is intentionally challenging and requires individual preparation as the trip is designed to take you out of your every-day comfort zone and achieve something incredible. Rest assured we have a thorough Safety Management System, indepth risk assessments and risk management systems in place.

You will be accompanied by your IFMGA qualified Mountain Guide/s. Our Guides are First Aid trained and have extensive experience in leading groups in this region. They will be ultimately responsible for your safety on this trip.

ADVENTUROUS EWE GUIDES AND CREW You will be accompanied by your IFMGA certified Mountain Guide/s throughout this mountain trek. An IFMGA-certified mountain guide is a professional whose competence has been certified worldwide by an official institution that is accredited by the IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guiding Associations). He/she may lead, instruct, advise and coach members of the public in the four disciplines of , ski touring, and ice climbing. Our Guides are First Aid trained and have extensive experience in leading groups in the Julian Alps. They will be ultimately responsible for your safety on this trip. Our Guides have been carefully selected to ensure you have the best experience with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

Your Guide is a key part to this trip. They are all expertly trained (IFMGA) and experienced in every field of mountain trek, bilingual (English and Slovenian) and have a huge passion for what they do and have plenty of knowledge ready to share with you. They are responsible for ensuring the complete safety, wellbeing and enjoyment of the team whilst also retaining a flexible and fun attitude. The Guide/s have radio and mobile phone contact with base, the local office and Adventurous Ewe's HQ.

TRIP GRADING Trekking experience and level of difficulty – ‘Tough’ This is a strenuous 2-day trek in the Julian Alps. It is graded ‘Tough’ due to the two full days of trekking, alpine scrambling and via ferrata sections. The trip is designed for confident trekkers who are looking for a short yet rewarding mountain ascent together with learning new mountain skills. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker and have a . Your route follows a well-established trail though there are some sections walking along ridgelines using via ferrata, the use of a safety harness, ropes, and a helmet (all of which will be supplied). No previous via ferrata experience is required as full instruction and support will be provided by your Guides.

As with any trek in mountainous areas, safety is paramount and your Guide will always make decisions to amend the itineraries to ensure the safety of the whole group.

WEATHER The climbing season for Mount Triglav is from July through October. Slovenia has a mixed alpine climate with summer temperatures in the range of 18 to 25°C. In the mountains cool mornings are normally followed by warm pleasant days, with temperatures in the Alps being ideal for walking. Summer weather on Triglav is quite cool; when it's pushing 30°C on the Slovenian plains, it may be just 10°C on Triglav. It often drops below freezing at night, and snow may persist on the peaks throughout the year. Weather on the mountain is highly variable, bringing unexpected wind, rain and snow.

ACCOMMODATION Hostel (1 night dorm share rooms) and mountain hut (1 night dorm share rooms) We've sourced our accommodation very carefully in Bled and picked a locally owned hostel in line with the Adventurous Ewe style of travel. Your first night you in Lake Bled you will be staying in the Hostel Bledec. Accommodation is in dormitory style rooms with a shared bathroom. Private rooms are available on request, as in an upgraded stay in the 3-Star Hotel. Please enquire at the time of booking.

Whilst on the trek you will be staying in comfortable mountain huts in dormitory style rooms (4+) with bedding provided. The huts have basic toilet facilities and running water however shower facilities are not provided. These huts range in size but are all staffed and catered.

Single travellers Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation in order to keep the cost at a minimum for you. Single rooms and tents may be organised for an additional cost however this is dependent on accommodation availability. Single travellers share with people of the same gender in accommodation ranging from twin to multi-share. FOOD AND DRINKS Whilst trekking breakfast and dinner will be organised and purchased in the mountain huts allowing you the flexibility to order what you wish. Breakfast will typically be bread, jam, cheese, tea and coffee. Dinner is usually two courses consisting of traditional Slovenian alpine food such as goulash, spaghetti or alpine stew followed by fruit, pudding, strudel or pancakes.

Lunch items, snacks and drinks can initially be purchased in Bled prior to your ascent and food and drinks can also be purchased in mountain huts. Again, this allows you the flexibility to eat what you wish and sample local foods.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps or streams enroute. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles. Bottled water can be purchased throughout the trek from the mountain huts, but we strongly discourage buying these as it contributes to plastic waste. LUGGAGE You will be required to carry your own rucksack for your 2-day trek containing items needed such as wet-weather jacket & trousers, a warm layer, beanie hat & gloves, clothes for the mountain hut, first aid kit, personal medication, sun-screen, camera, water, lunches, snacks, etc. You can leave your extra luggage in the hostel luggage room in Bled or at the Guide’s office. It’s always a good idea to have a travel padlock on your kit bag that you leave behind.

MT TRIGLAV SLOVENIA WEEKEND ADVENTURE

KIT LIST Please find below a list of essential and recommended kit for your Mt Triglav Adventure. Good quality, durable kit could mean the difference between a fantastic trip and an uncomfortable one. Please note, the climate in the Julian Alps is ever changing on a daily basis so please ensure you are well prepared for all weather conditions including the heat, the cold, the wet and very windy conditions.

ESSENTIAL CLOTHING  Water-proof jacket with hood AND water-proof trousers. It is imperative to have good quality water-proof clothing which is breathable. We recommend the following fabrics: Gore-Tex Pro, Gore-Tex or Páramo.  Wind-stopper jacket or a soft-shell jacket which is wind-proof  Midlayer or fleece  Trekking trousers - trekking trousers with zip off legs are ideal for lower sections of the trek if you feel the heat. Avoid cotton trousers  Base layers (merino wool or wicking fabric) long-sleeved top x 1 and long johns x 1 (ideal for sleeping in the mountain hut)  Buff – used for sun protection and warmth  Beanie which covers your ears and is lined for extra warmth  Gloves – thermal  Underwear  Clothes for mountain hut

FOOTWEAR  Hiking boots – well-worn in trekking boots with ankle support and waterproof  Trainers / crocs – or comfortable shoes to wear in the evenings / mountain hut. There are communal slippers available in the mountain hut as boots are not permitted in the hut  Socks – minimum of 2 pairs of merino wool or synthetic trekking socks over the liner socks. Please ensure you trial your sock-wear prior to departure to ensure your sock choice is suitable for your feet.  Flip-flops or similar – (optional).

KIT LIST MT TRIGLAV SLOVENIA WEEKEND ADVENTURE ______

BAGS  Kit bag – preferably a soft duffel bag. This bag with any additional clothing can be left in the hostel in Bled. Please ensure you have a luggage label attached to your bag with your name clearly written on it together with a travel padlock.  Rucksack – 30 - 35 litre rucksack should be sufficient for you to carry your own spare clothing, camera, and all your personal kit including your lunch, snacks and water. Preferably your rucksack should have with waist belt to help distribute the weight and a whistle for safety provisions  Dry-bags - we recommend packing your kit inside dry bags to ensure your kit remains dry in the case of wet weather. A wet-weather cover can also be used over your rucksack but this must be securely fastened to your bag especially during high winds.  Reusable cloth bag for shopping (to avoid plastic bags)

EQUIPMENT  Water bottle - we suggest a 2-3 litre capacity. Platypus / Camelbak system. A wide mouth water bottle is ideal for collecting water. Please bring water purification tablets to reduce the need for purchasing water in plastic bottles or you can purchase an Adventurous Ewe Water- to-Go filtration bottle  Head torch & spare batteries - essential to carry at all times during the trek  Sunglasses – these are essential. They must have strong UVA/UVB protection  Trekking pole(s) - optional. Please train with these prior to your trek  Gaiters – optional. Should be worn over the boot and not too tight  Sleeping bag liner – (optional as bedding will be provided in the mountain hut)

TRAVEL ADMIN  Passport  Visa - at the time of producing this document, UK nationals did not require a visa to enter Slovenia. For all other nationalities, please check with your respective Embassy with regards to visa requirements and applications  Insurance certificate / policy – essential. You must send your travel insurance document number and emergency contact phone number to Adventurous Ewe no later than 1 month prior to departure  Cash – Euro’s. Cash is needed for purchasing items in mountain huts.  Debit and credit cards  Photocopies of essential documents and a copy left with your next of kin  Pen – you need to complete a landing card on arrival at Ljubljana airport.

MISC KIT  Sunscreen and lip block – SPF40 as a minimum  Camera – we recommend small digital cameras however the scenery is spectacular so if you use a SLR style camera and you are happy to carry this.
