Thus the cultivation and dissemination of the compositions represented by the publi- shers unquestionably form the main emphasis of our work. Our successful collaboration with a large number of composers has now lasted over the course of many decades. The present publication presents portraits of a representative selection of our compo- sers from the field of serious music. We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to them and to all those only mentioned by name for their trusting and fruitful collaboration. The cornerstone of the publishing house was laid in 1935 by Dr. Hans Sikorski (1899-1972) in Berlin. Resident in Hamburg since 1946, the independent music pu- blishing group, still family-run, represents composers from all over the world. Sikorski has been committed to contemporary music for decades, with the spectrum extending from chamber music, orchestral music and stage works to musicals and film music. The works of composers of the former Soviet Union form a basic area of emphasis. Through the intensive work of our publishing house, names such as Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian and Dmitri Kabalevsky penetrated more strongly into the consciousness of Western cultural life and established themselves on the concert scene. The same was possible with the succeeding generations of composers and the oeuvres of Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edison Denisov, Giya Kancheli, Galina Ustvolskaya, Lera Auerbach, Elena Firsova, Alexander Raskatov and others. Numerous German composers are also represented, including Peter Ruzicka, Ulrich Leyendecker, Jan Müller-Wieland, Moritz Eggert, Johannes Harneit, Jörn Arnecke, Daniel Smutny, Johannes X. Schachtner and Marius Felix Lange. The international spectrum has been expanded to include such important composers as Marko Nikodijevic, Ferran Cruixent, Gerald Resch, Yaron Gottfried, Osmo Tapio Räihälä, Xiaoyong CHEN, Wenchen QIN, Guoping JIA and Lin YANG. The decisive promotion of contemporary music within the framework of an interna- tionally orientated publishing policy is our central concern. With the help of the com- posers who have been with our publishing house for many years, and the constantly growing roster of new composers, we are able to successfully and permanently set ourselves this task. 4 ko m p o N i s T e N B e i s i ko r s k i Die komponisten und ihr musikalisches schaffen stellen das Herzstück eines jeden musikverlages dar. pflege und Verbreitung der vom Verlag vertretenen kompositionen bilden daher auch den eindeutigen schwerpunkt unserer arbeit. Die vorliegende publikation porträtiert nun eine repräsentative auswahl unserer kom- ponistinnen und komponisten aus dem Bereich der ernsten musik. ihnen und all jenen, die nur namentlich erwähnt werden, sei für die vertrauensvolle und fruchtbare Zusam- menarbeit herzlich gedankt. Namen wie Dmitri schostakowitsch, sergej prokofjew, aram Chatschaturjan und Dmitri kabalewski gelangten durch die intensive Verlagsarbeit verstärkt in das Bewusstsein des westlichen kulturlebens und etablierten sich im kon- zertgeschehen. Gleiches gelang mit den nachfolgenden komponistengenerationen und den oeuvres von alfred schnittke, sofia Gubaidulina,e dison Denissow, Gija kan- tscheli, Galina Ustwolskaja, Lera auerbach, Jelena Firssowa, alexander raskatov und anderen. aber auch zahlreiche deutsche autoren werden erfolgreich vertreten, unter ihnen peter ruzicka, Ulrich Leyendecker, Jan müller-Wieland, moritz eggert, Johannes Harneit, Jörn arnecke, Daniel smutny, Johannes X. schachtner oder marius Felix Lange. Mai 1947 Baku/Aserbaidschan Zwischen 1965 und 1973 studierte Frangis Ali-sade am konservatorium in Baku klavier und komposition bei kara karajew, dessen aspirantin sie von 1973 bis 1976 war. im anschluss an ihr studium unterrichtete sie bis 1990 musikgeschichte am kon- servatorium ihrer Heimatstadt. ab 1990 war sie für drei Jahre als professorin für zeit- genössische musik und Geschichte der orchesterstile tätig und promovierte 1994 mit der arbeit ,Die Besonderheit der orchestrierung in Werken aserbaidschanischer kom- ponisten‘. seit 1999 lebt ali-sade in Deutschland und ihrem Heimatland aserbaid- schan. als pianistin setzt sich ali-sade nachdrücklich für die Werke zeitgenössischer komponisten der ehemaligen sowjetunion, für Werke der Zweiten Wiener schule sowie der gesamten moderne des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts ein. Frangis ali-sades kompositionsstil bewegt sich zwischen der traditionellen musik ihrer Heimat aserbaidschan und der (teilweise auch experimentellen) Gegenwartsmusik. Zwei kräfte wirkten in ihr, sagte sie einmal, und aus dem Widerspruch ergebe sich das Neue. ihr stil wird von einer eigenwilligen synthese dieser beiden Welten geprägt. ali-sade schafft eine musik, in der östlich modales Denken mit westlich konstruktivis- tischem verschmilzt. Franghiz Ali-Zadeh studied piano and composition from 1965 to 1973 at the Con- servatory in Baku with Kara Karayev, whose aspirant she was from 1973 until 1976. Following completion of her studies, she taught music history at the Conservatory of her native city until 1990. Beginning in 1990 she was a professor of contemporary music and the history of orchestral styles, receiving her doctorate in 1994 with the dissertation ‘The Special Qualities of the Orchestration in Works of Azerbaijan Composers’. Since 1999 Ali-Zadeh has been living alternately in Germany and in Azerbaijan. As a pianist, Ali-Zadeh has been especially committed to the works of contemporary composers of the former Soviet Union, to the Second Viennese School and to all modern music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s compositional style moves between the traditional music of her homeland Azerbaijan and the (at times also experimental) music of the present day. She once stated that two forces operate within her, and what is new is the result of this con- tradiction. Her style is marked by an idiosyncratic synthesis of these two worlds. September 1973 Hameln Jörn Arnecke wurde 1973 in Hameln geboren. Bereits als 30-Jähriger gewann er mit dem Hindemith-preis des schleswig-Holstein musik Festivals einen der wichtigsten kompositionspreise Deutschlands. Jörn arnecke studierte komposition und musiktheorie bei Volkhardt preuß und peter michael Hamel an der Hochschule für musik und Theater Hamburg. 1997/1998 war er einer der letzten schüler von Gérard

The author examines the creation of ‘Ustvolskaya Myth’ by critically analysing Soviet, Russian and Western literature sources, oral history on the subject and the composer’s personal recollections, and reveals paradoxes and parochial misunderstandings of Ustvolskaya’s personality and the origins of her music. Having examined all the available sources, the author argues that the ‘Ustvolskaya Myth’ was a self-made phenomenon that persisted due to insufficient knowledge on the subject. In support of the argument, the thesis offers a performer’s interpretation of Ustvolskaya as she is revealed in her music.

PETER OPIE - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA DECEMBER 2011 Among twentieth-century composers, Sergei Prokofiev is widely considered to be one of the most popular and important figures. He wrote in a variety of genres, including opera, ballet, symphonies, concertos, solo piano, and chamber music. In his cello works, of which three are the most important, his partnership with the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich was crucial. To understand their partnership, it is necessary to know their background information, including biographies, and to understand the political environment in which they lived. Sergei Prokofiev was born in Sontovka, (Ukraine) on April 23, 1891, and grew up in comfortable conditions. His father organized his general education in the natural sciences, and his mother gave him his early education in the arts. When he was four years old, his mother provided his first piano lessons and he began composition study as well. He studied theory, composition, instrumentation, and piano with Reinhold Glière, who was also a composer and pianist. Glière asked Prokofiev to compose short pieces made into the structure of a series.1 According to Glière’s suggestion, Prokofiev wrote a lot of short piano pieces, including five series each of 12 pieces (1902-1906). On the other hand, in the same comment Lindberg also mentioned features that have remained constant in his music, including his penchant for drama going back to the early defiantly modernistKraft (1985).

    SAYI 17 BAHAR 2018 MUSICAL CENSORSHIP AND REPRESSION IN THE UNION OF SOVIET COMPOSERS: KHRENNIKOV PERIOD Zehra Ezgi KARA1, Jülide GÜNDÜZ Abstract In the beginning of 1930s, institutions like Association for Contemporary Music and the Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians were closed down with the aim of gathering every study of music under one center, and under the control of the Communist Party. As a result, all the studies were realized within the two organizations of the Composers’ Union in Moscow and Leningrad in 1932, which later merged to form the Union of Soviet Composers in 1948. In 1948, composer Tikhon Khrennikov (1913-2007) was appointed as the frst president of the Union of Soviet Composers by Andrei Zhdanov and continued this post until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Being one of the most controversial fgures in the history of Soviet music, Khrennikov became the third authority after Stalin and Zhdanov in deciding whether a composer or an artwork should be censored or supported by the state. Khrennikov’s main job was to ensure the application of socialist realism, the only accepted doctrine by the state, on the feld of music, and to eliminate all composers and works that fell out of this context. According to the doctrine of socialist realism, music should formalize the Soviet nationalist values and serve the ideals of the Communist Party. Soviet composers should write works with folk music elements which would easily be appreciated by the public, prefer classical orchestration, and avoid atonality, complex rhythmic and harmonic structures. In this period, composers, performers or works that lacked socialist realist values were regarded as formalist.

In November of the same year he was reading Valery Bryusov’s novel, “The Fiery Angel.” At the same time he was establishing a closer relationship with his future wife, Lina Codina. For various reasons the composition of The Fiery Angel endured over many years. In April of 1920 at the Metropolitan Opera, none of his three operas - The Gambler, The Love for Three Oranges, and The Fiery Angel - were accepted for staging. He received no additional support from his colleagues Sergi Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and Pierre Souvchinsky, who did not care for the subject of Bryusov’s plot. Despite his unsuccessful attempts to have the work premiered, he continued working and moved from the U.S. to Europe, where he continued to compose, finishing the first edition of The Fiery Angel. He married Lina Codina in 1923. Several years later, while posing for portrait artist Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, the composer learned about the mysteries of a love triangle between Bryusov, Andrey Bely and Nina Petrovskaya.
