Lo u r e n ç o (With 7 figures) Abstract A new subgenus and species of scorpion,Hottentotta (Deccanobuthus) geffardi sp. n. (Buthidae), are described. The type specimen was collected in Kurduvadi, Deccan Province, India. This specimen had been examined previously by Vachon (pers. comm.), who suggested that it represented a new genus closely allied toButhotus Vachon (= Hottentotta Birula). However, because the precise compositionHottentotta of remains unclear, only a subgenus is proposed at present for this new species. Introduction In the mid-1940s, Vachon started some general studies on the scorpions of North of Africa (see Vachon 1952). One of his main preoccupations was to better define several groups within the family Buthidae, which lead to the division of the genusButhus Leach, 1815 into about 10 different genera. One of the genera proposed by Vachon (1949) was Buthotus, which grouped the majority of the species previously assigned to the subgenus Hottentotta Birula, 1908 (see Vachon & Stockmann 1968). Kraepelin (1891) was the first to distinguish a hottentotta“ group” (species-group) withinButhus. This mainly included species allied Buthusto Hottentotta (Fabricius, 1787). Birula (1908) created the subgenusHottentotta , but Vachon (1949), without explanation, discarded both Hottentotta Birula, 1908 and Dasyscorpio Pallary, 1938 establishing a new name, Buthotus, instead. Hottentotta is, however, a valid senior synonym and was re established by Francke (1985). -

Faulconbridge NSW 2776 1 2 Foreword Of all the ships that have flown the ensign of the Royal Australian Navy, there has never been one quite like the first HMAS Perth, a cruiser of the Second World War. In her short life of just less than three years as an Australian warship she sailed all the world’s great oceans, from the icy wastes of the North Atlantic to the steamy heat of the Indian Ocean and the far blue horizons of the Pacific. She survived a hurricane in the Caribbean and months of Italian and German bombing in the Mediterranean. One bomb hit her and nearly sank her. She fought the Italians at the Battle of Matapan in March, 1941, which was the last great fleet action of the British Royal Navy, and she was present in June that year off Syria when the three Australian services - Army, RAN and RAAF - fought together for the first time. Eventually, she was sunk in a heroic battle against an overwhelming Japanese force in the Java Sea off Indonesia in 1942. Fast and powerful and modern for her times, Perth was a light cruiser of some 7,000 tonnes, with a main armament of eight 6- inch guns, and a top speed of about 34 knots. She had a crew of about 650 men, give or take, most of them young men in their twenties. -

Taxonomy and distribution data of species are reviewed based on scientific literature until August 2008. We report the presence of 48 valid species in the area, belonging to four families and 16 genera. Examined material of nine buthid species collected from Egypt (including the Sinai Peninsula) and Libya is recorded. The current knowledge on taxonomy, chorotypic status, and origins of species, complexes, and genera in relation to their biogeography and phylogeny is also discussed. Only a Scorpion small fraction of scorpion species are considered harmful to humans, but the often life-threatening symptoms Venom caused by a single sting are significant enough to recognize scorpionism as a global health problem. The con- Scorpionism tinued discovery and classification of new species has led to a steady increase in the number of both harmful and Scorpion envenomation harmless scorpion species. The purpose of this review is to update the global record of medically significant Scorpion distribution scorpion species, assigning each to a recognized sting class based on reported symptoms, and provide the major toxin classes identified in their venoms. We also aim to shed light on the harmless species that, although not a threat to human health, should still be considered medically relevant for their potential in therapeutic devel- opment. Included in our review is discussion of the many contributing factors that may cause error in epide- miological estimations and in the determination of medically significant scorpion species, and we provide suggestions for future scorpion research that will aid in overcoming these errors. 1. The war left so many issues unhandled, one such issue is the theme of this thesis, and that is to analyze legal regime that is governing sunken warships. Status of warship still in service is protected by international law and national law of the flag State, stipulating that warships are entitled to sovereign immunity. The question arises whether or not such sovereign immunity status follows warship wreck? Contemporary international law regulates very little considering ”sovereign wrecks‘, but customary international law, municipal court decisions and State practices are addressing issues quite profoundly, stating that even the warship is no longer in service it is still entitled to sovereign immunity status. HMAS Perth is Australian owned warship whose wreck current location is within Indonesian Territorial Sea. Recent reports show that commercial salvaging has been done, provoking outrage amongst surviving HMAS 3erth‘s naval personnel and Australian historians. In order to acquire clear stand point on issue of Sovereign :recks legal status, especially of +0AS 3erth‘s wreck, an in-depth analysis of legal material is necessary. Key words: Camel spider, solifugid, revision, taxonomy Introduction Solifugae, commonly known as camel spiders, is a poorly studied order of arachnids. It currently includes 12 families and over 1,100 described species. The phylogeny of the order and of all but one family is currently unresolved. In recent years, our lab has focused on the phylogeny, biology, and natural history of the North American family Eremobatidae Kraepelin 1899 (Brookhart & Cushing 2002, 2004, 2005; Cushing et al. 2005, 2014, 2015; Conrad & Cushing 2011; Cushing & Casto 2012). Cushing et al. (2015) produced a backbone molecular phylogeny of the Eremobatidae that supported the monophyly of several genera and species groups within the family.
