When I was in high school 1962 1963 1963 at Fordham Prep, they had a thing called JUG. It was mindless, 1964 1964 which is what made it such a pain in the neck. And I was I’m sure 1965 1965 guilty of laughing (or) talking in class, and so I was consigned to 1966 1966 JUG, which meant walking up and down outside this building. 1967 1967 That’s all, just walking up and down. And several other bad boys would now be 1968 G 1968 1969 in the group. So one day, we were all walking up and down and I decided, ‘Let’s 1969 1970 sing.’ So we were singing, ‘Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah,’ that kind of 1970 1971 thing. And the discipline priest came out, stopped everything and said, ‘Who’s 1971 1972 singing?’ And they all pointed to me. So he told the others, ‘You can all go.’ And 1972 1973 then he said to me, ‘You stay, you walk and you sing.’ And for about an hour, I 1973 1974 had to walk up and down outside the building on the campus, singing. That was 1974 1975 about as bad a thing as I ever did. 1975 1976 1976 1977 1977 1978 1978 1979 1979 1980 1980 1981 1981 1982 1982 1983 1983 LAKE COUNTY MUSEUM/GETTY IMAGES 1984 1984 1985 1985 1986 1986 1987 1987 1988 1988 1989 CHILDHOOD 1989 1990 1990 1991 rowing up, Mom, Dad, myself and my baby 1991 1992 sister, we lived in a fifth-floor walkup apart- 1992 1993 ment in Washington Heights in New York. 1993 1994 Close-knit, just four of us. We didn’t do too 1994 1995 much together because we didn’t have any 1995 1996 Gmoney. My father had spent a lifetime at sea. He was 1996 1997 English, he had been in the British Navy and the Mer- 1997 1998 chant Marine, and eventually he married my mother 1998 1999 who was widowed – my father had passed on. On a 2002 2003 Sunday we would walk across the George Washington 2003 2004 Bridge – it didn’t cost anything – and if we had had a 2004 2005 good week, we’d have an ice cream cone at the Jersey 2005 2006 side, and then turn around and walk back and ride the 2006 2007 Fifth Avenue bus, up on top without the roof. I enjoyed going to school. I think 1961 1962 I enjoyed the camaraderie of my fellow students more than 1962 1963 anything else. I prepared out of fear, because I didn’t want 1963 1964 to fail – I didn’t want to be held up to ridicule. I’ve always 1964 1965 done that – researched out of fear of sounding dumb. I read, 1965 1966 I would not say, anything more than the average fellow. I read a little 1966 1967 I 1967 bit more as I got into college, and I tried to retain a few things – that’s 1968 difficult in itself. He had a lovely daughter, but he treated me like a 1964 H 1964 1965 son. But again, it’s because he cared. So 1972 1973 he had a tremendous influence, especially on preparation, because 1973 1974 he would always pepper me with questions before the game. ‘Why 1974 1975 is this fella hitting ahead of this fella? Sandy would walk down 1964 1965 1965 toward the bullpen to warm up and get standing ovations. 1966 I 1966 Players would stop doing what they were doing to just look 1967 1967 at him. Clayton is a marvelously talented young player, but 1968 1968 for whatever reason, he doesn’t really have the electricity that 1969 1969 1970 involved Koufax. It’s really hard to explain, but maybe it was 1970 1971 part of Sandy’s nature. His nature was to recede back into his 1971 1972 shell – the more applause, the more acceptance, the quieter 1972 1973 he became. I think Clayton revels in the applause and in the 1973 1974 attention. And good for him – he should. But they are totally 1974 1975 different people. 1975 1976 You have to remember, Clayton pitches every fifth day. Sandy pitched every fourth day. It’s a big difference, physically. 1976 1977 Sandy was unusually strong. One reason is to look at the way he was built. He had an unusually broad back and extremely 1977 1978 long fingers. I’d almost wreck my wrist swinging Sandy’s golf clubs, because the handles of the club were like barrels on a 1978 1979 bat to accommodate his fingers. So he was unusually strong. ... Clayton is just not built quite that way, but as a modern- 1979 1980 day, every-fifth-day pitcher, Clayton is what he is – twice a Award winner, and the sky’s the limit. 1980 1981 1981 1982 1982 1983 1983 1984 1984 1985 1985 1986 1986 1987 1987 1988 1988 1989 1989 1990 1990 1991 1991 1992 1992 1993 1993 1994 1994 1995 1995 1996 1996 1997 1997 1998 FERNANDOMANIA 1998 1999 1999 2000 VS. PUIGMANIA 2000 2001 2001 2002 h, totally different. Fernandomania was almost spiritual. 2002 2003 I had the feeling many times: I would see an apparently 2003 2004 lower-income Hispanic family coming to the ballpark, with 2004 2005 toddlers or little children, and I knew that they were coming 2005 2006 not just to watch a game, and not even just to watch Fernan- 2006 2007 do.O I know they were saying to their children, ‘See that man out there? He 2007 2008 comes from abject poverty, from the back of beyond. And see what hard 2008 2009 work and everything else will do.’ I knew that was what was going on. 2009

They’re all some- 1961 1962 what different as life progresses – your life changes constantly. So 1962 1963 no, I don’t have a specific (favorite). Maybe, of course, when you 1963 1964 first start this job, this major job, you’re very much younger and 1964 1965 more impressionable and emotional, so maybe the ’50s, which 1965 1966 was a real growing-up period both in my life and my broadcasting career, 1966 1967 I 1967 that was probably the biggest change. And then you kind of settle in. 1968 “You don’t dread (the years passing). You’re grateful you’ve gotten that 1968 1969 far. He had just tak- 1996 1997 en over really. And so my reaction was (that) he’s got 1997 1998 so many more things to worry about than naming a 1998 1999 streetI after me. I mean someday, it’d be nice I guess for my 1999 2000 children, grandchildren and down through the years. But 2000 2001 you know, when you’re not here, it’s not going to make you 2001 2002 feel any better anyway. So whatever they decide is fine with 2002 2003 me. There’s no need – there’s no hunger. It’s not like I really 2003 2004 want to have a street. No. And I was truly (speaking) from 2004 2005 the heart when I said, ‘If they’re naming streets around here, 2005 2006 one should be Walter O’Malley.’ I mean, he brought 2006 2007 the team here. He built the stadium. What more do you need 2007 2008 to have a street named after you? The Dodgers were 1960 1961 playing the Phillies, the final game of the year, winner 1961 1962 goes on to the World Series. And it was a great match- 1962 1963 up, and , two great 1963 1964 pitchers of that era. And to make a long story short, the Dodgers 1964 1965 G 1965 lost that game – 10th-inning home by – and I went 1966 down to the clubhouse to kind of commiserate. It was my first year. I 1966 1967 walked by, and there was a door open and I saw a station wagon piled 1967 1968 1968 with stuff on top of it, and I thought, ‘Well, only a player can park 1969 1969 there.’ And I thought, ‘Why would a player be all ready to go home – 1970 1970 don’t you think he’d be thinking of winning and staying?’ And I said 1971 1971 ‘Whose wagon is that?’ And they said, ‘Oh, that’s Carl Furillo.’ Well, 1972 1972 1973 Carl Furillo was blue-collar, worked hard day after day after day, and 1973 1974 I said, ‘I saw you’re packed out there.’ And he said, ‘Yeah, you either 1974 1975 do or you don’t.’ And that really struck me as the complete profes- 1975 1976 sional. ‘You either do or you don’t.’ 1976 1977 Interview with Vin Scully conducted January 7, 2014. 1977 1978 1978 JON SOOHOO 1979 1979 1980 1980 1981 1981 1982 1982 1983 1983 1984 1984 1985 1985 1986 1986 1987 1987 1988 1988 JON SOOHOO 1989 1989 1990 1990 1991 1991 1992 1992 1993 REFLECTION 1993 1994 1994 usually push forward, it’s rare for me to go backwards, very rare. One 1995 1995 time I did go backward was last year, when they clinched in and 1996 1996 they went into the swimming pool and all that stuff. I had left the booth, 1997 1997 1998 and I wasn’t going to go near the clubhouse because I know they were 1998 1999 pouring champagne and all that stuff. So I went to the bus in the tunnel 1999 at the ballpark, and I was totally alone, and I sat there quietly, and I became a 2000 I 2000 reflective person. 2001 2001 2002 I started thinking back over the pennants that the team had won and the 2002 2003 various players who had contributed heavily to them. I thought of the frustrating 2003 2004 days and seasons. So yes, that was one special time, and it was probably 45 2004 2005 minutes when I sat quietly in that bus and enjoyed every minute of it, going back 2005 2006 through the years. 2006 2007 I can’t say it all stays fresh. It was more like faces. It was more like sitting on a 2007 2008 little grassy knoll, and let’s say it’s a golf tournament and the players are walking 2008 2009 by. In my mind, players were walking by, running by, pitching and hitting or 2009 2010 crying ... not specific games, but players, people, men that I knew well. 2010 JON SOOHOO
