It’s a Woman’s World: Almodóvar’s Fighting Girls vs. the Struggles of the 90s Casey Watson Marshall University Spanish Capstone Watson 2 Pedro Almodóvar is a well-known director that centers his films around his home country of Spain. Almodóvar was one of the heads of the arts movement called La Movida Madrileña. Dr. Mark Allinson wrote the book A Spanish Labyrinth: Films of Pedro Almodóvar, which analyzes Almodóvar’s background and breaks down his films, “Pedro Almodóvar symbolized free and democratic Spain – as its chronicler and as its agent provocateur…” (Allinson 3). Almodóvar has been seen as a provocateur for his shock-filled and controversial films. His films have been seen as a starter of a movement of liberating Spain from its oppressed past and a look into the dark sides of the world. Almodóvar used his film, All about My Mother to fight against the oppression of women and the LGBTQ community from Spain’s history and to bring forth the struggles that were faced in the 1990s. The oppression of these groups is rooted in Spain’s history that goes back to the coup d’état of the Republic and the dictatorship of Franco. The Republic, 1931-1939, was a golden age of for women in Spain. “According to the historian Mirta Núñez (2004), the Republic prompted women to have and seek an autonomous presence in the public sphere, a presence not subordinated to men. It pushed them to seek and find paid employment in order to make a living on their own, and it also tried to instill equality in early education” (Ayerra 247).

The Hidden Earth: Visualization of Geologic Features and their Subsurface Geometry Michael D. Piburn, Stephen J. Reynolds, Debra E. Leedy, Carla M. McAuliffe, James P. Birk, and Julia K. Johnson ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Paper presented at the annual meeting of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, New Orleans, LA, April 7-10, 2002. ABSTRACT Geology is among the most visual of the sciences, with spatial reasoning taking place at various scales and in various contexts. Among the spatial skills required in introductory college geology courses are spatial rotation (rotating objects in one’s mind), and visualization (transforming an object in one’s mind). To assess the role of spatial ability in geology, we designed an experiment using (1) web-based versions of spatial visualization tests, (2) a geospatial test, and (3) multimedia instructional modules built around innovative QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR) movies. Two introductory geology modules were created – visualizing topography and interactive 3D geologic blocks. The topography module was created with Authorware and encouraged students to visualize two-dimensional maps as three-dimensional landscapes. The geologic blocks module was created in FrontPage and covered layers, folds, faults, intrusions, and unconformities. Both modules had accompanying worksheets and handouts to encourage active participation by describing or drawing various features, and both modules concluded with applications that extended concepts learned during the program. Computer-based versions of paper-based tests were created for this study. Delivering the tests by computer made it possible to remove the verbal cues inherent in the paper-based tests, present animated demonstrations as part of the instructions for the tests, and collect time-to-completion measures on individual items.

PEDRO ALMODÓVAR’S “HOMAGE” TO TENNESSEE WILLIAMS MICHAEL S. D. HOOPER “A Streetcar Named Desire has marked my life.”1 The filmic qualities of Tennessee Williams’ plays and stories, their perceived adaptability and the writer’s own willingness to explore the possibilities of an emergent Hollywood cinema in the early part of his career have contributed in no small part to the wide reach of his success and reputation. Indeed, his experimentation with dramatic forms, evident as early as 1944 with The Glass Menagerie and its “plastic theatre”,2 has been seen as an extension of the techniques Williams no doubt assimilated from a youth spent in movie houses: The drama of Tennessee Williams derives its lyric naturalism from the adaptation of the modern short story for the cinematic theatre. Throughout the canon, film techniques undermine the conventions of stage realism. Music comes out of nowhere. Lighting is symbolic.3 Williams often seems to have had one eye on a broader canvas, one which eschews the limitations of theatrical mimesis and which measurably assisted the transition of his work to the big screen. An Introduction to Film
An Introduction to Film (Faith & Film: Elements of Filmmaking) The Special Nature of the Art of the Cinema The Effects of Flow 1. Flow: “Anything that makes you conscious of the camera pulls you out of the experience” (see Boorstin, Making Movies Work, 31). Contrast this to the flow of a sermon. Should a sermon ever draw attention to itself as a mode of persuasion (to lose flow but add to the credibility)? 2. The essence of the art of Cinema is the FLOW that we experience when we’re transported into an imaginary but vividly real world of make-believe (cinema’s “illusionism”). FLOW engages our curiosity, interest, desire, and intellect by causing us to become concerned, focused, Questioning, and open to new realities and interpretations. To get to the “what” of the movies” we first have to get past the “wow of the how” (the illusion). 3. Flow occurs when a movie appeals powerfully in three areas in good balance (in Boorstin, How Movies Work): a) The voyeuristic element: this world is real (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars trilogies, Godfather, Harry Potter films) b) The vicarious element: I empathize with the feelings of the characters (Sixth Sense, Philadelphia, Contact, Precious, Shawshank Redemption) c) The visceral element: I am caught up in experiencing this (Devil, thriller movies, Toy Story 3) 4. For the viewers to experience this flow, they must be willing to “suspend their belief.” (They know the movie is not real, but they are willing to accept this.) In addition, all the elements of the movie should cooperate to keep viewers absorbed in the movie, not expel them out of it.
