WHISKEY IN THE JAR Widely popular & oft-performed traditional Irish tune; modern lyrics go back at least to1870; the American Metal Band, Metallica, earned a Grammy in 2000 using those lyrics! The song tells of a highwayman spurned by his lover. In Irish lore, one symbol of resistance to British colonialism has been the highwayman. It starts on Christmas with the Edinburgh Torchlight Parade and is all downhill from there! Look to Scotland to find the best, most spectacular fire festivals in the UK. Combine the primitive impulse to light up the long nights (the ancient idea that fire purifies and chases away evil spirits) and the natural Scottish impulse to party to the wee small hours and you end up with some of the most dazzling and daring midwinter celebrations in Europe. At one time, most Scottish towns celebrated the New Year with huge bonfires and torchlight processions. Many have disappeared, but those that are left are real Site where the horde was found humdingers. Here are the five of the best winter fire festivals in Scotland: STONEHAVEN FIRE FESTIVAL: Strong Scots dare-devils parade through the town on New Year's Eve swinging 16-pound balls of fire around themselves and over their heads. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. The room contained a dozen tables, and vapors of homemade moonshine had almost replaced oxygen in the air. The bar offered no entertainment, except for an old jukebox playing dixieland tunes in the corner. Patrons were here to drink, but it wasn't the sweet taste of white whiskey they sought. I am not saying that all illegal alcohol was bad, but for sure good liquor wasn't found in this joint. This bootleg establishment was located in a basement, below an honest and legit clothing store. Behind the bar, Frank was wiping glasses. Frank was a tall and poorly shaved white guy. He had small dull eyes, yet he was known for his occasional moments of wisdom. Frank was no saint, but he was a good man. He believed in personal freedom and had started his business after boll weevils had destroyed all his crops. He was acting calm and jaded that night, even though he was worried about a payment due the day before that he hadn't been able to honor. Missing payments in legal business is not an issue to be taken lightly. However it fails to compare with the risks of missing payments when dealing with the mob. And here in Louisiana, the Mafia was involved in pretty much everything illegal, especially bootlegging. Frank was afraid he would be made an example of. He feared they would go after him – he had no family – or close his speakeasy.

The Mostly Celtic Songbook Mostly Celtic Songbook 2 Introduction After sitting in on some of the Tuesday evening open jam sessions at C.B. Hannegan’s in Los Gatos, and trying to sing along but not remembering the lyrics, it seemed like a good idea to compile a songbook that we could all share. After one or two pints and a few encouraging words from Tony Becker, the idea became a project. So, here it is. It’s not by any stretch of the imagination complete, but it does contain many of the Celtic traditional songs1) that are played, along with some popular country and folk songs. The songs included here are the ones played most frequently, and some I added on my own. In some cases, I took the liberty of editing some of the traditional lyrics for readability, especially the lyrics I got from the Web, and adding or changing a few chords, since many of the songs exist in several different versions anyway. Some of the song titles are listed without the leading “The” and “A” in the index, to make it easier to find them. The chords are written in Nashville notation (well, sort of), so transposing is a piece of cake. For example, the root chord is represented as a 1, and the other chords are numbered according to their relationship to the root chord. So, in the key of C, a C chord is 1, an Am chord is 6m, an F chord is 4, a G7 is 57, and so on. Chord numbering in relative minor keys is arbitrarily based on the root of the corresponding major key, so a Dm is 6m, where F is 1.
