Metallica played their first ever show on March 14, 1982 at the 150 capacity Radio City club in Anaheim: they were paid $15 for their appearance. The band played a nine song set, featuring just two original songs – Hit The Lights and Jump In The Fire – and seven NWOBHM covers. “Went down pretty good,” Lars Ulrich noted in his gig diary. “Very nervous. Played so-so.” The second show advertised on this poster, scheduled for March 26, never actually took place, as the band were busy practising for two shows supporting Saxon at LA’s famous Whisky A Go Go club on March 27. Larry Hollingworth, current visiting professor of AID MEMOIR Humanitarian Studies at Fordham University in New York City, served as head of the UNHCR’s efforts in Bosnia throughout the lengthy conflict that plagued the former Yugoslavia in the early to mid 90’s. Aid Memoir follows Larry and his UN colleagues throughout multiple efforts to provide much needed relief for besieged, isolated, and desperate communities riddled by senseless killing and aggression. The characters encountered throughout are at times thrilling, at times frightening. Larry spares no details, however troubling, and therefore shines a telling light on the reality of the situation that most will remember to have watched on their television screens. Front cover. The concerts were historic on multiple levels, serving as the grand opening of San Francisco’s Chase Center, reuniting the band and Symphony for the first time since the 1999 performances captured on the Grammy-winning S&M album, and featuring the first-ever symphonic renditions of songs written and released since those original S&M shows. “S&M2 offers an inspired and eye-opening view into not just the shared heritage of classical music and heavy metal, but into the spirit of innovation and to endless vistas awaiting exploration.” - Louder “And it’s also of little surprise, especially for anyone who attended those increasingly legendary shows at Chase last year, that this new album is another major winner. What a great memento of such a monumental night in Bay Area live music history.” - The Mercury News “This collaboration between Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony brings to life the fusion of heavy metal and classical music. As it was in 1999, S&M2 is a grand celebration of the energy and magic that these forms of music convey.” – Metal Wani S&M2 is a landmark release in the Metallica catalogue, both sonically and visually.

Several people deserve special mention for their involvement in the writing of this thesis. Thanks to Dr. Jeremy Yudkin and Dr. Victor Anand Coelho for their direct guidance in this project. Their knowledge of popular music has been a wonderful resource, and their input and direction have consistently steered me on the right course. I am very grateful for the patience they have shown in helping me through this long process. Thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Seitz, who was a tremendous influence in getting me started down this path. She invited me to give a guest lecture at her popular music course at Brown University, and it was through our discussions and preparation for this lecture that I first recognized the extent to which Metallica uses variation. It was with her encouragement that I followed these observations through to this thesis. Thanks to Dr. Joel Sheveloff, Dr. Thomas Peattie, and Dr. Joshua Rifkin for their interest and input in this project and personal support. Thanks to Dr.
