Objective: The prime objective of the study is to document the traditional medicinal plants used by tribal people inhabiting the sanctuary. Methods: The ethnobotanical studies carried out during 2013-15. The information was collected through interviews, discussions and observations. Many tribal pockets were visited to interact local people and gathered information about medicinal plants. Results: The present investigation revealed the medicinal properties of 96 species belonging to 88 genera under 47 families. The most cited family was Apocyanaceae (9) followed by Lamiaceae (6), Fabaceae (6), Malvaceae (5), Capparaceae (4), Rubiaceae (3), Combretaceae (3), Menispermaceae (3), Asteraceae (3), Convolvulaceae (3), Moraceae (3), Verbenaceae (3), (3), Euphorbiaceae (2), Amaranthaceae (2), Liliaceae (2), Caesalpinaceae (2), Cleomaceae (2), Solanaceae (2), Loganiaceae (2) and remaining families contributed one species. Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a urgent need to conserve the plant resources of study area from over exploitation and illegal trade of rare plants like Red sanders. Krishnaiah, Dr. K. “Tirupati City With Many Slums ; An Ill Health Environment To The Piligirim Centre” in Martin J. Bunch, V. Madha Suresh and T. Vasantha Kumaran, eds., Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Environment and Health, Chennai, India, 15-17 December, 2003. Chennai: Department of Geography, University of Madras and Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University. Pages 226 – 232. TIRUPATI CITY WITH MANY SLUMS ; AN ILL HEALTH ENVIRONMENT TO THE PILIGIRIM CENTRE Dr. K. Krishnaiah Associate Professor, Department of Geography, S.V.University, Tirupati- 517 502 Abstract Industrialisation results in increasing urbanization. The accumulation of wealth and availability of more economic and job opportunities in the urban centres have resulted in the concentration of the population in the congested metropolitan areas and thus the formation and growth of big slum areas. These slum centres, when combined with industrial sectors, become more hazardous from the stand point of environmental degradation and pollution. If these slum centres are many, it is hazardous and causes ill health to the city like Tirupati, an important piligrim centre in the country. In the present study the emphasis was on the ratio of the total number of slums. 42 were identified in the small area 0.715 sq. km as per 2001 census in Tirupati. The author makes a caution that the higher the density of slums in the pilgrim centre, the more will be the ill health environment in terms of spread of diseases. Introduction The phenomenon of rapid urbanization in conjunction with industrialization has resulted in the growth of slums. The sprouting of slums occur due to many factors, such as the shortage of developed land for housing, the high prices of land beyond the reach of urban poor, and a large influx of rural migrants to the cities in search of jobs etc.

PROFILE OF ANANTAPUR DISTRICT The effective functioning of any institution largely depends on the socio-economic environment in which it is functioning. It is especially true in case of institutions which are functioning for the development of rural areas. Hence, an attempt is made here to present a socio economic profile of Anantapur district, which happens to be one of the areas of operation of DRDA under study. Profile of Anantapur District Anantapur offers some vivid glimpses of the pre-historic past. It is generally held that the place got its name from 'Anantasagaram', a big tank, which means ‘Endless Ocean’. The villages of Anantasagaram and Bukkarayasamudram were constructed by Chilkkavodeya, the Minister of Bukka-I, a Vijayanagar ruler. Some authorities assert that Anantasagaram was named after Bukka's queen, while some contend that it must have been known after Anantarasa Chikkavodeya himself, as Bukka had no queen by that name. Anantapur is familiarly known as ‘Hande Anantapuram’. 'Hande' means chief of the Vijayanagar period. Anantapur and a few other places were gifted by the Vijayanagar rulers to Hanumappa Naidu of the Hande family. The place subsequently came under the Qutub Shahis, Mughals, and the Nawabs of Kadapa, although the Hande chiefs continued to rule as their subordinates. It was occupied by the Palegar of Bellary during the time of Ramappa but was eventually won back by 136 his son, Siddappa. Morari Rao Ghorpade attacked Anantapur in 1757. Though the army resisted for some time, Siddappa ultimately bought off the enemy for Rs.50, 000. Anantapur then came into the possession of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

Mapping Land Subsidence of Krishna – Godavari Basin using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry Technique Lokhande Rohith Kumar, Divya Sekhar Vaka, Y. S. Rao Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, IIT Bombay, Powai-400076, Mumbai, India Email: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] KEYWORDS: Interferometry, subsidence, PALSAR, oil and gas wells ABSTRACT SAR Interferometry (InSAR) is a technique by which a wide area can be mapped for surface deformation. The conventional InSAR technique has limitations due to baseline restriction, atmospheric phase delay and temporal decorrelation. Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) technique is an advanced InSAR technique, and it mitigates the atmospheric phase delay effect and geometric decorrelation to a large extent by utilizing a stack of interferograms and gives time series deformation with high accuracy. Extraction of oil and natural gas from underground deposits leads to land subsidence. The East coast of Andhra Pradesh (AP) state in Krishna-Godavari basin is most likely to be affected by this phenomena because of extraction of oil and natural gas from its underground reservoirs for the last two decades. In this paper, an attempt is made to know how the urban cities in this region are affected due to land subsidence using PSI technique. For this, two coastal test areas are selected and ALOS-1 PALSAR datasets from 2007 to 2011 comprising of 11 and 13 scenes are processed using PSI technique. Although the area predominantly agriculture, small villages, towns and cities provide adequate Persistent Scatterers (PS). From the results, land deformation rates of different cities in test area are observed.
