  • NIAZI TRIBE of MIANWALI: a Cultural Study Session
NIAZI TRIBE OF MIANWALI: A Cultural Study Session: 2012-14 By PARI GUL NIAZI Roll No. 10 M.Phil (Regular) Supervised by: Dr. Muhammad Akbar Malik Department of Pakistan Studies The Islamia University of Bahawalpur i Abstract Mianwali district is located in Pakistan it is one of less developed area of Pakistan. There are different casts living in Minawli but the majority living people are consisting of Niazai tribe. This is one of the strong tribes of Pathans. Their culture and language differs a lot from other people. This is never discussed in dateils at any forum. One or two articles can be found in newspapers but not a detailed thesis or book is found on this topic. This is the reason; this topic was chosen for a research work. Although the history of Mianwali district is explored and worked for many times yet the cultural aspects remained in dark. A less worked area which is never been discussed, could bring a research material to the field of Pakistan Studies and cultural anthropology. It will encourage others to explore their culture which we are forgetting and merging with the western culture. This work highlights the cultural aspects of Niazai tribe specifically. The research style is followed by the steps taken in the Cultural Anthropology of Connard Phillip Kottak. Niazai people of Mianwali are very hospitable and respect its guests. But their language contains an element of satire so the habitants of that area are used to it and reply other person in a mocking manner. It is creates humor among them.

  • State Capacity in Punjab's Local Governments
Final report State capacity in Punjab’s local governments Benchmarking existing deficits Gharad Bryan Ali Cheema Ameera Jamal Adnan Khan Asad Liaqat Gerard Padro i Miquel June 2019 When citing this paper, please use the title and the following reference number: S-37433-PAK-2 STATE CAPACITY IN PUNJAB’S LOCAL GOVERNMENTS: BENCHMARKING EXISTING DEFICITS Gharad Bryan, Ali Cheema, Ameera Jamal, Adnan Khan, Asad Liaqat Gerard Padro i Miquel This Version: August 2019 Abstract As the developing world urbanizes, there is increasing pressure to provide local public goods and local governments are expected to play an important role in their provision. However, there is little work on the nature of of capacity deficits faced by local governments and whether these deficits are acting as a constraint on performance. We use financial accounts data from Punjab’s local governments for 2018-19 to measure their ability to utilize budgets and find that there is considerable variation in this metric across local governments. We supplement this with a management survey with the top managers whose decisions affect budget utilization in a random sample of 129 out of 193 urban local governments in Punjab. We find that the capacity deficits in local governments are particularly challenging in terms of human resource capabilities, the adoption of automated systems, and legal and enforcement capacity. We also find that better human resource capabilities and the use of managerial incentives are positively correlated with budget utilization. Our evidence provides new insights on the importance of management and human resource capabilities and systems capacity in local governments in a developing country setting.

The study area is gifted with fertile agricultural land that is blessed with arid and semi-arid climatic conditions. However, uncultivated landscapes in the region are occupied by wild flora including wild edible fruits. This work focused on the consumers of wild edible fruits in the indigenous communities because of their vast traditional knowledge on the nutritional importance of indigenous wild species. A total of 27 wild edible fruit plants were recorded in the area belonging to 16 families. All the plants were native and have occupied the area for decades or centuries. Ziziphus nummularia, Morus nigra and Morus alba were found to be the most abundant and consumable species. The most rarely occurring species were Asparagus officinalis, Cocculus hirsutus, Cordia gharaf and Grewia tenax. The plant samples were collected, identified, preserved and deposited in the Herbarium of University of Sargodha (SARGU) for future reference. Fruit samples were subjected to proximate analysis such as moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash and nitrogen free extract (NFE) contents to evaluate their nutritional importance.
