  • Look Around a Look at Historical & Archaeological Issues in Andover and the Surrounding Villages
Look Around A look at historical & archaeological issues in Andover and the surrounding villages. 2016 Number 3 September “Look Around” is the newsletter of the ANDOVER HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY www.andover-history.org.uk From the Chair September 2016 Firstly our congratulations to Martin Coppen for winning a research and publication award from the British Association for Local History for his article The History of St Mary Magdalene Hospital (The Spittle) in our 2015 edition of Lookback. Martin was presented with his award by Professor Claire Cross at the BALH Local History Day in London in June. This year’s edition of Lookback will be on sale at our first meeting of the autumn in September. As always, it is full of interesting articles but it does look a little different because we have changed the way it is bound. I hope you will approve the change as I do, especially as the new binding allows edition details to be printed on the spine making it easier to find a particular edition on my bookshelf. If you have passed the Andover War Memorial Hospital recently, you may have noticed that the entrance road has been named Henry Gamman Drive. This decision by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is very welcome because it formally recognises that Henry Gamman gifted the land to help Andover build its war memorial to the Andover men who died in WW1, which included both of his sons. The occasion had a special link to the past because descendants of Henry Gamman took part in the the naming ceremony by the of Mayor of Test Valley, and afterwards the public were invited to see the facilities the hospital now offers.

  • Report of Subject Secretaries Committee. S
-99 REPORT OF SUBJECT SECRETARIES COMMITTEE. S. ANDREWS. Correspondent. As correspondent of the above Committee, I have to report that this' war time is playing havoc • with our special work. County Archaeology is not active, and New Forest Natural History has to lie by, Winchester Botany also suffers, but each of these hopes for future work to be reported. Hants Ornithology is quite dormant with Mr. Philip Munn on active service with the troops. The Isle of Wight is at present the most active side of the work, Mr. Colenutt having'some useful notes, especially of practical developments of Geology. As to Mediaeval Hants History I can report a commencement of making the papers of the Ecclesiastical Court at Winchester tell their tale, and also a beginning of work at the Court Rolls of the Episcopal Manors, which are cared for by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in Lon- don. While the anxiety of the National trouble continues little more can be expected in this matter. I append Reports from Subject Secretaries :— New Forest Fungi, 1915—J. F. RAVNER, F.R.H.S. In the course of the season two fungus forays were held in the New- Forest, one by the Bournemouth Science Society, the other by the New Forest Natural History Society,%both being conducted by the Sectional Secretary. On each occasion rainy weather pre- vented any notable results, except that Lactarius hysginus Fr. and Hygrophorus calyptreeformis Berk, were found in fresh localities. On the other hand, a considerable amount of individual work has been done, especially in the Brockenhurst district, and the follow- ing 19 species have been added to the Forest list, besides many fresh localities for species already recorded :—Lepiota holosericea Fr., Pleurotus ulmarius (Bull.) Fr., Lactarius volemus Fr., Russula rosacea Fr., Marasmius splachnoides - (Hornem.) Fr.,.

  • NOTES. Cranbury Park. Bank S.W. of the House and Close to It. Can Be
304 HAMPSHIRE FIELD CLUB: NOTES. By O. G. S. CRAWFORD, F.S.A. Cranbury Park. Bank S.W. of the house and close to it. Can be traced round the W. and N. W. edge of the Hill. Appears to have been tampered with at various times. There was a dwelling here, I think, in mediaeval times, when some damage may have been done ; and there has also been extensive landscape gardening in subsequent (18th or 19th century) times. But the site is the highest in the district : the park contains Celtic lynchets and a ditch, now under plough again : and the name (-bury.) suggests a pre-Conquest, and therefore probably pre-Roman earthwork. Hickley Farm. There are the remains of the south side of a fine hill-fort in the wood W. of the farm, but most of it has been destroyed by gravel- digging. Breach Farm, Bishopstoke. On 18th May, 1936, I observed a belt of buttercups, from the train, cutting across a bend of the Itchen between Breach Farm and Allbrook. I had previously observed a slight depression here, as of a filled-up ditch. Air photographs confirm. this. Last winter I walked over the ground, now arable, and found that the depression was.as I noted, and extends from the alluvium on the N. round to that on the W. I picked up a nice " Thames pick " of flint in the field. I have little doubt that this was a promontory fort. PAPERS AND PROCEEDINGS 305 A CAMP NEAR NURSLING. Mr. O. G. S. Crawford, F.S.A., zorites from Hope Villa, Nursling, near Southampton, under date September 10th, 1942, as-follows : "T7ESTERDAY morning (September 9th, 1942) I found JL another ' camp-' within less than a mile of this house, where I have lived for almost 22 years ! It is in the modern parish of Rownhams, between Lord's Hill and Aldermoor, in a copse adjoining the south end of Nursling plantation, which copse is bounded on the east by a road leading to Lord's Hill and Rown hams, and on the south by the road from Brown Hill to Aldermoor Bridge.
