The back is suffering because it is taking on too much to compensate for these weak- ened or injured areas. Low back pain can be the result of many different things. Over time, a muscle injury or weakened muscle that isn’t managed can lead to an overall imbalance of the spine, causing constant tension and tightness. Lower back exercises focus on strengthening the core: back, hips, abdominals and glutes. Knowing what exercises to do and what exercises to avoid is important in the healing process. With low back pain, it helps to start the day off with some gentle stretching. Walking also helps wake up stiff joints and muscles. Of course, de- pending on the cause and se- verity of your back pain, it is important to get approval first from your physician be- fore engaging in exercise. It’s necessary to get the body warm before perform- ing any deep stretches. Lean- ing forward to touch your toes may feel good, but standing toe touches puts greater stress on the discs and ligaments in your spine which may increase your pain. Instead of full situps, opt for upper-body crunches just lifting the shoulder blades off the floor. This can strengthen the abdominals without putting pressure on the discs in your spine. Lying leg lifts, high-impact activities, weight lifting or any activities that twist the back, such as golf, should be avoided during this recovery phase. It is suggested that you avoid sleeping on your stomach because it puts too much pressure on your spine. Instead, sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. The Tigers (2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are off to their third straight 4-0 start and are brimming with confi- dence after defeating Boston College 34-7. Next up are the Hokies (4-0), who open their league season attempting to end a four game losing streak against the Tigers. “I definitely think our best football is in front of us,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “Especially if we’ll keep bringing the right mindset and just learning from mistakes.” They made plenty of them the first three quarters against Boston College as Kelly Bryant threw two inter- ceptions and the Eagles kept the Tigers pinned deep in their territory in a game that was tied at seven entering the final period.
