Knaphill Football Club began its life in 1924 at Waterer's Park.Waterer's Park was left to Woking Urban District Council in 1924 by Mr Anthony Waterer of Knaphill Nursery. The Recreation Ground was originally part of the nursery called "Blue Gates Field" and the park was laid out by Woking Council between 1924 and 1928 - the task taking so long as the bottom part of the field was very "soggy", whilst the rest was uneven and infested with moles. And these conditions can still be seen over 70 years later! Very little history is known about the Club between 1924 and 1980, although we do know that the team colours were originally red and white. In 1980 Knaphill were represented in the Old Woking and District League (now Guildford and Woking Alliance League) in Division 3 under Manager Dave Holloway. Dave took them from Division 3 through promotion to the Surrey Intermediate League. Dave then left Knaphill to take over Conference side Woking's reserve and youth teams. The late Andy Westcott took over the Manager's position at Knaphill in 1984. Andy successfully took the Club from Division 3 to the Premier Division 1, at the same time Clive Howes was running the Reserve Team, who also won promotion from Division 3 to the Reserves Premier Division 1.Geoff Poulton was to go on to take over the running of the Reserve Team from Clive Howes.

In 1990, Mick Garbutt became the Manager of Knaphill and Paul Bambini was running the Reserve Team. Mick Garbutt left the Club in 1994 to join up with Colin Lippiatt and Geoff Chapple at Woking. After this time the club went into decline and was struggling for players for both the First and Reserve Teams. The decision was taken by then Senior Secretary, Sean Carrigy, to approach local team Heathlands, who were playing in the Guildford and Woking Alliance League. Heathlands found themselves struggling for facilities but not players; this gave the two teams the opportunity to amalgamate. Season 1995/96 saw the arrival of Greg Anderson as Manager, with Sean Carrigy running the Reserve Team. In 1996 Dave Freeman took over from Greg as First Team Manager. The Reserve Team Manager's position was handed over to Noff Diliberto in 1997; he left the Club a year later, when Carl Barker took over. Season 2002/03 saw 2 new men at the helm with Mick Garbutt in charge of the 1st Team and Frank Walters in charge of the Reserves. Paul Bailey took over midway through 2002/2003; Carl Barker then had a second spell as Reserve Team Manager with Danny James as Reserve Team Coach and Dave Freeman as 1st team coach.

At the start of the 2003/2004 season the club formed a third team named KNAPHILL 'A' to play in the Guildford & Woking Alliance League due to volume of players at the club. Carl Barker took over as A Team Manager with Danny James in charge of the Reserves. The 2004/2005 season brought about further changes at team management level seeing Dave Freeman retiring from playing due to injuries and being appointed as 1st Team Manager with Mick Garbutt stepping down to Assistant Manager. There was also a new man at the helm for the A Team with Kevin Fletcher taking over from Carl Barker who had taken up the Chairman role. The club also moved into there new ground at Redding Way and the re-development of the Waterers Park ground, due to finished by April 2005, giving Knaphill Football Club some of the best facilities in the Surrey area.

In the 2004/2005 season the Reserves finished Runners Up to Old Rutlishians and the A Team were beaten by a last gasp winner in the Junior Cup Semi-Final against Shepperton FB with 1st Team finishing 7th in there respective division.

Season 2005/2006 was destined to be a big season for the club with the club established at its new ground at Redding Way and the A Team reverting back to Waterers Park having had the facilities rebuilt. 1st Team Manager Dave Freeman continued in charge for the 2005/2006 campaign and appointed former professional with Bristol City, Bob Pritchard, who has also managed at senior level with Chertsey Town, amongst others, as 1st Team Coach. Kevin Fletcher was appointed Reserve Team Manager having impressed by running the A Team the previous season. The 2005/2006 season did prove successful as we won the Division One title on the last day of the season against nearest rivals Virginia Water and gained promotion to the Premier Division.Season 2006/2007 continued with Dave Freeman in charge of the 1st Team and Paul Bailey re-appointed as Reserve Team Manager. The A Team management was split during the season. Martin Hobson took charge during the first few months but had to resign due to work and family commitments. Gavin Wilcox and Tim Handley then took over until the end of the season.

The 1st Team claimed back to back titles by winning the Premier Division Championship which resulted in us achieving promotion to the Combined Counties Football League, the most successful period in the clubs history up to then. Bob Pritchard took over from Dave Freeman as Manager who became Bob’s assistant during September 2007.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME KNAPHILL VS WARLINGHAM THE STORY SO FAR SEASON 09/10 historyofknaphillfootballclub

The 2007/08 season was the busiest the club has ever endured. Over 45 matches were played at Redding Way and the pitch was still the best in the league at the end of the season. Bob Pritchard and Dave Freeman led the club to a very commendable 7th place in the CCL, our first in senior football. The early season had seen Knaphill pushing for a top 5 position, but poor runs over the Christmas & Easter periods saw the clubs performances drop off the leading runners; still 7th place was an excellent result considering the circumstances. Steve Hutton led the Reserves campaign, a massive 40 games with a mixture of good and bad results, beating the leaders of the league on at least two occasions, but dropping too many points by conceding late goals. The A Team had an up and down season eventually finishing in 7th place in the GWAL 3rd Division table.

The closed season also saw the amalgamation of Knaphill FC and Knaphill Wanderers (the junior sides) at long last under the Knaphill FC banner. The Wanderers will keep their identity for the coming season and plans to achieve the highly sought after FA Community Charter status will continue in earnest.

The 2008/09 season started with a most welcome new face, the former Bisley and Farnborough Assistant Manager, Ian Savage. Ian joined us as player/coach and with his experience and knowledge this club has the right to feel proud that he chose to join Knaphill after receiving many other offers from teams at higher levels. Steve Hutton has left his post as Reserve Team manager for pastures new in the summer and was replaced by the very experienced Graham Pope, however Graham left the club in November due to personal reasons and side is now run by Adie Wilson and Lee Cook.

The A Team is now under the control of James Taylor and Brendan Baker who received the good news at the GWAL AGM that their team is to play in the 2nd Division last season after wholesale changes in the leagues constitution. With a reduction in League games in Division One to 34 from 38 in 2007/08, Knaphill entered two new Cup competitions. the Anagram Trophy and the Southern Combination Cup, both of which saw an early exit. However, the team kept a high profile in the League staying in the top half of the table all season, eventually finishing in fifth place. They could have become champions had they won their last game of the season when, in a tightly bunched set of teams in the top six. Knaphill on 69pts needed to win at Farleigh to pip Staines Lammas to the title. Disappointingly they lost 3-2, so near yet so far.

The Reserves finished ninth in their Division with the second half of the season providng a 17 match sequence losing just two games. Adie Wilson having taken over in November from Graham Pope gelled well his players and together that was shown with the results. The A team won promotion to Division 2 of the GWAL, their second move up the ladder having been promoted from Division 3 to Division 2 the previous season. The new season sees a B team starting their first season in Division4(North).

In the close season Terry Chapman was voted in as the new Chairman, replacing Nick Croshaw who stood down after two seasons. The newly formed Ladies side will also come under the senior banner and once again enhance on the size of the football club. Plans for floodlights and hard standing alongwith a 100 seated stand at Redding way are moving forward with the help of Woking Borough Council who continue as in recent years to support the football club.

So, a challenge ahead for individuals, players and management combined for the new season 2009/10.

warlingham fc

visitors todays

Warlingham F.C was founded in 1896 and is affiliated to the Surrey F.A. The clubs base is at Church Lane, Warlingham where they moved in the early twenties. At this time they amalgamated with Warlingham C.C to form Warlingham Sports Club. In the early years the team played at various local venues. The current Church Lane site was left to the people of Warlingham for the pursuit of sport and is now used to support our junior teams and our "A" and "B" teams and 2 Veterans teams. For the coming season 2009-2010 (and 2010-2011) we have entered into a ground sharing agreement with Ryman South team Merstham. This allows us to retain our position in the Combined Counties league and pursue promotion to the CCL premier division. In the meantime we will continue to look for alternative local sites to build our own facility to meet the ever increasing demands of the Football Association.

Our reserve team will continue to play at Verdayne (Hamsey Green Playing Field), which was leased, from Tandridge District Council in March 2004 specifically to allow us to gain promotion to the Cherry Red Records Combined Counties league. In our long history we have gained virtually every honour available in Intermediate football and also achieved success at the next level having won the Combined Counties Div 1 title in season 05/06 and the Reserve section in both 04/05 and 06/07. In September 2008 we completed work on a new floodlit Astro training facility which has improved what we can offer our members in both our adult and colts sections.

Season 08/09 was a year of consolidation with all 6 adult teams finishing comfortably within their respective leagues. Again it fell to the evergreen Vets to deliver our success. Our Vets "A" won the Surrey Vets Cup 10 years after our hat trick of success in the late nineties. They were also runners up in the league and reached the league cup final. We were also runners up in the Jersey Vets Tournament narrowly losing our title after our victory in 2008. Our U9's reached the final of the Tandridge League cup. We ran 6 senior teams during season 2008-09 and will do so again during 2009-2010. Our Colts section will grow to 10 teams and continues to provide a regular flow of talent for our senior teams.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME KNAPHILL VS WARLINGHAM VISITORS SEASON 09/10

Chris Fox netted The Last Time We Met two goals against the Wars Tuesday August 18 2009 Warlingham 0 Knaphill 5

What a difference a few days make in football at the start of a new season. Having gained just one point from their first two games, Knaphill’s last two have produced maximum points from both, scored nine goals, and in the convincing 5-0 win against Warlingham, they showed all the right ingredients, pace, purpose, and an excellent team performance at Merstham’s ground on Tuesday night.

Knaphill made their presence felt with a strike after just six minutes. Following an early scare which produced a couple minutes of desperate defending, they cleared their lines, went on the attack as James Wills worked well down the left flank, delivered the perfect shot from just outside the 18 yard box and into the far corner of goal to make it 1-0. After 13 minutes, it could have been two, as Nick Darnell’s short lob forward found Chris Fox in the box, but his hurried effort blazed over the bar. Soon after Ricky Hogsden advanced towards goal and the keeper who pounded his effort away.

The visitors defence had to be aware of a quick break from Warlingham as a bit more composure by the home side might have paid dividends, whilst at the other end, Knaphill had two opportunities to increase their lead. Another dangerous run on the left, saw Wills deliver the perfect cross for Matt Baker to knock home goal number two from 6 yards after 25 minutes. Five minutes later, following an initial contribution from Hogsden, it was Baker’s drive from 20 yards which had his goal mark stamped on it to nestle in the back of the net.

Matt Baker netted Then a hasty clearance from Vic Flynn averted danger as the home side had a th twice, one of which couple of cracks at goal. In the 34 minute, Knaphill came close to a fourth had his goal mark goal when a through ball from Wills, was latched onto by Fox as he raced stamped towards goal, but was thwarted by the keeper. Shortly before halftime two on it further efforts from Knaphill went wide of the post. Taking their comfortable 3-0 lead into the second half, Baker’s stinging shot brought out an excellent save by Murch in the home goal, turning it over the bar. Prior to that, Knaphill’s keeper Danny Wheeler, saved well from James Ang.

But Knaphill’s next goal was a well worked effort, Wills was against instrumental in the move as he slipped the ball to Fox who tucked away his shot from eight yards for a 4-0 lead. It was Fox again who was on target in the 75th minute when a poor clearance by the defence allowed him to latch onto the ball and calmly slot home for his second and Knaphill’s fifth. Warlingham could have notched at least a couple of goals in the latter stages of the game, but for a couple of good saves from Wheeler, some timely defending and a bit of off target shooting.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME KNAPHILL VS WARLINGHAM ACTION REPLAY SEASON 09/10 BOOTROOM inside BANTER talk ian savage

This week Bryan Freeman gets the Inside Talk from player coach Ian Savage……

Player coach Ian Savage made a big impact when he joined Knaphill at the beginning of last season and introduced a tough but beneficial coaching/training programme with the First and Reserve teams, and also became instrumental on the pitch.

But then Ian has always proved his worth from the time his early playing days started in football. On leaving school at the age of sixteen, he grabbed the opportunity to be part of the Southampton FC YTS scheme and was with there for three years gaining valuable footballing experience at a top pro Club. That experience, Ian took with him when he left Southampton and moved nearer to home by joining Farnborough Town in the Football Conference.

A three year spell proved very productive during his 3 year stay at Cherrywood Road with over 100 appearances for Boro. Ian became a player not to rest on his laurels at one Club, and moved onto play for five different Clubs over a period of time. After leaving Farnborough, Ian played for Wokingham, Hampton & Richmond Borough, Salisbury, Borehamwood, and Dulwich Hamlet. His time at Dulwich was a shorter stay where he sustained a broken leg and was out of football for over 2 years.

The passion and need to continue playing was still very much within Ian Savage the player, and when fully fit and raring to be part of the action again, he joined Hartley Wintney as coach, and for one season was playermanager. Never short of a challenge, Ian went on to take his experience to Godalming for 2 years as playercoach at the then Combined Counties League side. In his second season there, the Club won the Premier Division title. Moving on…Ian was part of the Bisley squad that won the League title in season 2005/06. After Bisley he packed in playing, but that wasn’t to be for too long!

The next move was back to Farnborough in his coaching role. By then, League titles were following Ian around, and Farnborough became the third successive club where he was involved with a title winning side. It was then Knaphill who were to benefit from Ian’s coaching skills when he joined the Club for season 2008/09, Knaphill’s second season in the Combined Counties. This followed a conversation with Manager Bob Pritchard and a visit to the ground, where Ian saw the potential in getting involved with a local Club who were moving very much onwards and upwards.

OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME KNAPHILL VS WARLINGHAM INSIDE TALK SEASON 09/10 The players early reaction to the new coaching/training regime, found it tougher than they were used to, but realised it was beneficial to them all for fitness and skills. Ian being very influential with the players not only in training but in that first season on the pitch as a player as well. With the team finishing in 5th place in Division 1 last season, after missing out on the title in the last match of the season, Ian thought the team had ‘over achieved’ last year in their total of 34 games, winning 22 and losing nine of league games, and playing some good football, the right way.

Ian feels the team are under achieving this season, with other Clubs ‘more aware of us’ despite what he feels is a better side, which is not performing as well as last season, and missing players like Jonathan Lloyd, Jason Greenwood and Gavin Evans. Plus there are some stronger teams showing up in Division 1 this season. At this stage there have been too many games lost, but the team are capable of doing better. There are still 20 games remaining, half the season, and a good run could bring the side higher up the Division One table.

Cherry Red Records Combined Counties League Division One Saturday 2nd January 2010 South Park 1 Knaphill 1

Having been out of action for three weeks, Knaphill’s season recommenced with a visit to South Park on Saturday where they shared the points in the 1-1 draw, a result that showed a fair reflection of equality between the two teams. Knaphill though went very close to grabbing all three points in the closing minutes of the game. Without strikers Matt Baker and Ricky Hogsden the Club’s leading striking duo, that extra finishing touch of chances was lacking in the first half, although the second half saw a more effective approach in Knaphill’s play. The first chance for the visitors came after eight minutes when Jason Greenwood, making his first appearance of the season after a few months in America, swung over a cross which lone front man Greg Alexander headed over the bar. Greenwood’s performance showed he will be an asset to the team in a brief spell at the Club before returning to the States. On 27 minutes Alexander did have the ball in the net, but was offside.

Earlier a move between Gavin Brainch and Alexander almost produced a goal, but the final effort was block by Polley in the home goal. South Park also had their opportunities in the opening 25 minutes before they took the lead on the half hour when a cross from the left saw Whiting-Balcombe rise to plant a header past Richard Shelley’s vain attempt to gather the ball to make it 1-0. Three minutes later, the home side created more danger in the Knaphill defence with an effort which came back off the bar.

Knaphill started the second half with more zest and bite in their play with a better approach than the first half. They had an appeal for a penalty turned down after 64 minutes, before forcing three corners within a couple of minutes. After 75 minutes, Craig Parrington ventured into the 18 yard box, only to be brought down, and from the resul- tant penalty, Ian Savage scored from the spot kick for the equaliser. South Park went close to regaining the lead after 78 minutes with a header that struck the bar that left Shelley rooted to the spot, expecting it to go over the bar. A minute later Knaphill came close, Daniel Cox releasing a stinging drive just over the bar.

Two substitutions spurned Knaphill with a late flurry of chances. Tom Davis had a shot looking goalworthy, thwarted by the outstretched leg of the keeper, then Matt Edwards saw one effort blocked near the line and another looking set for the top corner, headed clear over the bar by a defender. Knaphill close to a possible winner, but finishing with a deserved share of the points.
