H. F. Loomis , the well-known specialist on millipeds of the

West-Indies and Central America , died in Miami 1 Florida , on

July 5 1 1976 , of cardiac complications , at the age of 79. Born in Mertensia , New-York , on December 23 , 1896 , he was exposed to Diplopoda early in life : his uncle G.N.Collins was an early collaborator with O.F.Cook, and Loomis came under the influence of cook when he joined the U.S.Department of Agri­ culture in 1914 • Several of his early papers were co-authored with Cook , and a similarity in philosophy and technique between the two men was evident in Loomis•s writings. Although a botanist and horticulturist by profession , the taxonomy of millipeds occupied his leisure time for many years , and either alone or in company with Cook he was able to collect material in China 1 western United States , the West Indies , and Central America. He was an expert photographer and elegant enlarged photographs illustrated some of his earlier papers. After eight years of residence in Arizona during the 1920's , Loomis was transferred to the u.s. Plant Introduction Station in Miami , where he was thenceforth permanently stationed. During the last 13 years of his professional career he was di­ rector of this facility , and after retirement in 1958 , he maintained a small office-laboratory there where his milliped work was conducted. Except for two taxonomic studies (on american callipodoid and cambaloids millipeds) Loomis's papers were basically faunistic in approach. His major works are complete surveys of the millipeds of Hispaniola and of Panama , and a checklist of the millipeds of Central America, all three indisp.ensable basic references for these regions. Loomis described new milliped taxa in 51 papers , publishing a total of nine new families , 129 new genera , and 525 new species (some in collaboration with other authors). Our personal friendship extended back to 1946 (R.L.H.) , and throuqhout this periode of three decades he remained always a most ~racious an~ helpful colleague. With his passing, systematic Diplopodology suffers a grievous loss, and no one stands ready to take his place.

On March 20 , 1976, an informal meeting of myriapodologists vas held at Radford C6liege , Radford , Virginia ; the participants being R.M. SHELLEY (Raleigh), W.A. SHEAR (Hampden-Sydney) , A.A. WEAVER (Wooster) and the untersigned. The occasion was taken for discus$ion of subjects of mutual interest , and a short local excursion was· ·made to collect males of a minute Chordeumatoid thought to represent hhe family Tingupidae. Although only persons were involved, this is the greatest· number of myriapodologists ever assembled at one time and place in the western hemisphere , and was considered a great success. A se­ cond annual congress , now being organized by Dr. Shelley , will be held in Raleigh , North Carolina, on March 18-20 ·, · 1977 , and a much larger attendance (10- 12 persons) is expected for this event. "TREATISE ON MYRIAPODOLOGY " (R.L.H.) Garland Publishing, Inc., a New-York company, has undertaken to pu­ blish a series of -1noriographs under the above· general 'title r the i11ili.:.. vidual volumes to appear whenever manuscripts are available. Each is expected to comprise a complete, independant treatment of some asp.2cts of the biology of myriapods , making a reference sui table for begir:- · ning students as well. as for specialists. The initi~l contribution , now in press and expected to appear by June, 1977 , is entitled "Classification of the Diplopoda" and was compiled by thre untersigned who is also general aditor for the series.
