It is great to see so many students participating in a wealth of events since the last edition. After a short break, Year 7 split into small groups and walked around the village filling in a map by labelling the age of the buildings and the services. The history of the village of Burham can be traced back to Roman times. The Battle of the Medway took place in AD43 at the crossing point on the River Medway where Burham is now situated, when the invading Roman legions, advancing west across Kent, were confronted by a massed army of the ancient British Tribes. Around 1830 Burham became a “Cement Village” on the Medway, after the discovery of the manufacturing technique for Portland Cement. Students were then introduced to mythical beasts and had to create their own in pencil tone. After this they were shown how to mould and construct clay and then they were able to construct their mythical beast using the techniques shown to them. After the sculptures were complete, students presented their work to the rest of the class and discussed the work in front them.     Germany Gains Right To Host Bobsleigh And Skeleton World Championships The world governing body of bobsleigh and skeleton has announced Germany©s Konigsee has been selected as the last-minute replacement for Sochi. Konigsee has hosted the World Championships on four previous occasions, most recently in 2011. In a statement on its website, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) remarked the track was available during the period of two weeks for which the championships had already been scheduled. It added local officials had the required operational and logistical expertise to successfully organize the event at such short notice. The IBSF further added that holding the events at Konigsee would minimize the travel and financial impact on the teams. The IBSF decided to withdraw the 2017 World Championships from Sochi after evidence of systematic, state-sponsored doping emerged in a second World Anti-Doping Agency- commissioned report by Canadian sports lawyer Richard McLaren. Announcing the decision to strip Sochi, the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation said it was prudent not to organize such an event in Russia. Latvia was the first country to boycott the World Championships in Sochi. The IBSF was urged by high-profile American bobsledder Lolo Jones to move its flagship event. Lolo had remarked she wanted to compete in a competition that was "drug free and safe." Kyle Tress, an American skeleton racer, had previously remarked memos calling for a boycott of the bobsled and skeleton championships in Sochi have been circulated. Kyle said there is tremendous support to skip this event, and he thinks it is the right decision.

    PRESS RELEASE – Preview 2 BMW IBSF Bobsleigh + Skeleton World Championships Overall World Cup winner, Olympic and World Champion favourites for men’s skeleton Whistler (RWH): The overall World Cup winner versus the Olympic Champion versus the World Champion in the battle to win gold in the men’s skeleton at the 2019 BMW IBSF World Championships. Alexander Tretiakov of Russia – who has just won his second overall World Cup (after first winning in 2009) – has been the most successful and consistent athlete of the 2018/2019 season. He has notched up four World Cup wins, plus two second-place finishes and two fourth-place finishes. And the 2013 World Champion has enjoyed positive results at Whistler Sliding Center in the past. He won Olympic bronze there in 2010 and has also finished on the podium three times out of his last four World Cup appearances. The Olympic Champion Sungbin Yun (KOR) is also a firm favourite for a World Championship medal. The Korean athlete has finished in the top three at all eight World Cup races this season and has also celebrated two victories. The 2016 World Championship silver medallist has also won the last two World cup races in Whistler. And last but not least, there is the defending World Champion Martins Dukurs of Latvia who has previously won Olympic silver in Whistler along with two of his 51 World Cup race wins. A win for him would spell World Championship title number six. The top three favourites are then followed by a long list of potential candidates for a World Championship medal.
