On the occasion of 80th birthday of His Holiness Late Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb RA , Burhani Foundation was established by Syedna in 1992 which conducts and sponsors projects related to environmental research and preservation of natural resources. The late Syedna had advocated for the conservation of nature and had strongly emphasized on avoidance of envi- ronmental degradation. His realistic and result-oriented guidelines for the safeguarding of the eco-system and con- trolling pollution have been seminal in environmental schemes setup in India and elsewhere. From the dry interiors of Rajasthan in India to the mountainous terrain of Yemen where the Mausolea of Dawoodi Bohra saints are located, horticulture, apiculture and agriculture projects such as greenhouses, terrace cultivation, plantations, rain water harvesting and lush landscapes have been extensively undertaken under the late Syedna and now his successor His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin Saheb (TUS) ‘s directives and guidance. On the occasion of 103rd Milad Mubarak, BFI recounts the activities undertaken by the Foundation celebrating Milad over the years as BURHANI ENVIRONMENT DAY. The competition was enthusiastically received in the four major States of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where it was organ- ized by the local women’s organizations under the guidance of BFI, the re- A series of “Environmental Awareness Workshops” was launched. The Nasik workshop on 5th April, 2008 sponse was overwhelming and beyond expectations. was one of the first in this series. About 120 participants from Nasik and a main team from Mumbai attended this workshop. It included small group discussions, large group interactive sessions, lectures, presentations and video films. This workshop covered many environmental topics e.g. climate change, global warming, waste management, energy conservation etc. An inter-school competition “Envestigate 99” was held for the students of STD 8th, 9th and 10th. Students had to undertake a survey of any recreation area, natural water bodies or historical/heritage site and learn about its history, environmental problems it is facing and its solutions. An “Enviro Quiz” and “Tree Plantation Programme” BFI sponsored an Eye Camp organized by Dr Mustafa Parekh in Khambat. Various eye surgeries and operations was also organized in many different places, which received a good response. were conducted and medicines were given to the patients. “Clean Air” contest was organized for Dawoodi Bohra Women in the age group of 14-24 yrs.     ʿAshara Mubaraka AH 1440 Majlis 7 English Reflections On the 8th of Muharram al-Haraam we were blessed with the barakat of three Du’at Mutlaqeen in the day of ʿAshara Mubaraka dedicated to Amirul Mumineen AS. Al-Dai al-Ajal Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA invoked Imam Husain AS to intercede for those who have yet to be blessed with children. Zakariyyah Nabi AS was instructed to fast on the second of Muharram and by the intercession of barakat of Imam Husain, Allah Taʿala answered his prayer for a child. Syedna Saifuddin RA recalled that his father Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA also fasted on this day and was bless with children at a late age. In the brief bayan mubarak we had the honour of listening to, Maulana al-Muqaddas RA directed us to always remember one thing: remain true to your dai. We were then blessed with the waʿaz mubarak delivered by Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA 33 years ago in Indore affront a gathering of nearly 1,20,000 at the same location where al-Dai al-Ajal Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS addresses us today. In his waʿaz mubarak, Syedna al-Muqaddas explained that Imam Husain AS chose to sacrifice his life in order to preserve truth, to preserve the faith. In this context Maulana Burhanuddin RA counselled Mumineen to always be truthful, to continuously remember Husain AS as do people of other communities who even take vows in his name. We should stay true to the Shariah, prayer and fasting and be brotherly both with Mumineen and with people of other beliefs.

    Muslim Women and the Challenge of Religion in Contemporary Mumbai 323 Muslim Women and the Challenge of Religion in Contemporary Mumbai QUDSIYA CONTRACTOR Religious freedom for Muslims in general, and the rights of Muslim women in particular, has been a matter of serious contention in post-colonial India. Although the right to religious freedom is enshrined in the Constitution, and India is signatory to several international conventions, it continues to be highly contested not just in the courts of law, but also in everyday life. The rights of women to equality of religious practice seems to throw up greater political challenges since the guardians of most religions are men, while religion itself is seen by many feminists as another institution that constitutes patriarchal power, to which Islam is no exception. Religious personal laws, for instance, have posed a major challenge to the career of secularism and one such debate has been the role of religious orthodoxy on the question of Muslim women’s autonomy in marital and family life. The Shah Bano case (1985–86) highlighted how the interests of women are particularly vulnerable to exploitation by an alliance of religious and secular interests (Pathak and Rajan 1989).     To Allah we belong and to Him we return It is with deep sorrow that we inform Mumineen of the wafaat (demise) of the 53rd Dai al- Mutlaq Syedna Khuzaima Qutbuddin RA on the 23rd Jamadil Ukhra in USA, California. Our beloved father has passed away to the highest echelons of jannat in the fellowship of Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA and Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA in hazrat of Imam-uz- zamaan SA. Syedna Qutbuddin RA has left in our midst his successor, his Shehzada to whom Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin RA gave the name Taher, the Mubarak name of Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA. Syedna Qutbuddin RA personally prepared his beloved son and made him like him in knowledge and character. This year on the 27th of Muharram, the urus Mubarak of Syedi Fakhruddin Shaheed RA, Syedna Qutbuddin RA appointed Syedna Taher as his successor and granted him the laqab Fakhruddin. At that moment Maulana Qutbuddin advised the witnesses to keep the Nass confidential and gave the witnesses the handwritten letter of Nass. Syedna Abu Khuzaima Taher Fakhruddin TUS is the 54th Dai al-Mutlaq and the representative of Imamuz-Zaman Tayyibul-Asri wal-Awaan SA. The succession of Du’aat Mutlaqeen continues. A Maula has passed, A Maula remains. Mawlaka mada, mawlaka baqi. May Allah Ta’ala grant long life till qiyamat to Syedna Taher Fakhruddin. May we swear our allegiance and misaaq to the Dai al-Haqq and board the ark of salvation, the safinatun-najaat. In this difficult time, Aqamaula TUS advises all Mumineen to recite Quran Majeed on the niyyat of our Dai, our compassionate father, Syedna Khuzaima Qutbuddin RA.
