Alpine National Park ‐ around Heyfield, Licola and Dargo Visitor Guide The Alpine National Park stretches from central Gippsland all the way to the New South Wales border where it adjoins Kosciuszko National Park. In this south‐western section of the park you will find pleasant Snow Gum woodlands, sprawling mountain vistas, spectacular rivers and gorges, as well as rich cultural heritage ‐ from the rock scatters of the Gunaikurnai people on lofty vantage points, to grazier’s huts nestling in protected folds of the high country. Hut is a further 3 km though groves of snow gums. Built in 1940, the Getting there hut is an excellent example of bush architecture. Continue 1 km This area of the Alpine National Park is situated approximately 250‐ south east from the hut to the carpark. 320 km east of Melbourne. To get to Heyfield take Princes Highway to Traralgon, then take Traralgon‐Maffra Road. The steep East terrain and spectacular Snowy Mountains in the north give way to sloping foothills, broad Gippsland coastal plains and extensive dune systems in the south. Region Four river basins form the region – Far East Gippsland (basin 21), Snowy (basin 22), Tambo (basin 23), and the Mitchell (basin 24). Mitchell River Basin January 2014 Introduction Southern Rural Water (SRW) is the water corporation responsible for administering and enforcing the Mitchell River Basin Local Management Plan (LMP). The purpose of the Mitchell River Basin LMP is to: • Document the management objectives for the system; • Explain to licence holders (and the broader community) the specific management objectives and arrangements for their water resource and the rules that apply to them as users of that resource; • Clarify water sharing arrangements for all users and the environment, including environmental flow requirements; and • Document any limits, including water use caps, permissible consumptive volumes or extraction limits that apply to the system. Management objectives The objective of the LMP is to ensure the equitable sharing of water between users and the environment and the long-term sustainability of the resource. Water system covered The LMP covers all the unregulated rivers and creeks located within the Mitchell River Basin, which includes: Mitchell Catchment Wonnangatta & Dargo Catchment Mitchell River (downstream of East Gippsland Wonnangatta River Water off take) Mitchell Lagoons (including Pound Swamp & Dargo River Macleods Morass) Upper Mitchell River (upstream of Wentworth Clifton Creek & Tributaries River) Prospect (Boggy) Creek Iguana Creek The Mitchell River Basin is shown in the map below. Catchment information The Mitchell River is a Heritage River and is the largest remaining river system in Victoria that does not have a large on-stream dam. Its major tributaries include the Wonnangatta, Wongungurra, Dargo and Wentworth Rivers. With a catchment basin of some 4800km2 and long term average discharge rates of 884,500Ml per year, it provides valuable irrigation water to Lindenow valley farmers as well as supplying urban water users.

Walk Title: Wonnangatta Valley Overnight Walk No
WALK TITLE: WONNANGATTA VALLEY OVERNIGHT WALK NO: 17 DISTANCE/TYPE: 17 kms / one way – overnight Sun & Mon WALK DURATION: 7 hours GRADING: Medium / Hard ASCENT/DESCENT: 170 / 1,090 metres PATH: Foot track and 4WD track A walk through spectacular alpine plains and forest, with magnificent views across the mountains and down into the Wonnangatta Valley. This walk is supported by the Macalister 4WD Club which will transport our food and camping supplies down into Wonnangatta. On Sunday, explore the history and remains of the Wonnangatta Station area and the nearby cemetery. WALK DESCRIPTION: Start walking from the Bryces Gorge picnic area. Take the signposted track towards Guys Hut. After 1 km note an interpretive sign about Guys Hut, then visit the old, restored hut. Take the signposted track towards Conglomerate Falls and Wonnangatta. After about 1.5 km the track splits. Take the left track towards Wonnangatta. The track is fairly level, with tussock grass and scattered snow gums. For a while the track is overgrown and frequently indistinct as the course follows a shallow valley beside the Conglomerate Creek. Crossing the creek headwaters, continue heading N/NE until reaching the 1,400m contour. Here the foot track becomes benched as it winds its way down towards the Dry River far below. This could be a suitable spot for morning tea. The switchback track trends NE for 2 – 3 km before bending back NW until near the bottom of the descent. Cross a small creek and follow the track eastward, parallel to the Dry River. From the west, the Bicentennial National Trail merges with our track.
