It basically divides an object into two mirror-image halves. The line of symmetry can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. There may be one or more lines of symmetry. One of the most enduring cultural changes was the adoption of French names, at the expense of the more traditional Anglo-Saxon ones. In an attempt to imitate their new conquerors, many English chose to abandon the traditional names like ‘Godwin’, ‘Harold’, or ‘Ethelred’, in favour of names French names like ‘William’, ‘Henry’ or ‘Robert’. Even in the last decade, William still features in the top 10 baby names for boys in England and Wales today. Wednesday L.O. to investigate the Bayeux Tapestry The Bayeux Tapestry (pronounced Bay-O), in spite of its name, is not really a tapestry. However, it is an important historical item that gives information surrounding the events of the invasion of 1066. Read the information about the tapestry and then answer the questions below: 1. What are the measurements on the tapestry? 2. How many scenes are depicted? What does it look like? 3. Who is shown shipwrecked off the coast of France? 4. What do scholars think is on the missing part of the tapestry? The tapestry is 70 metres long and just under 50 centimetres wide… That is 2 metres wider 5. Names embroidered are in what language? 6. “The Bayeux tapestry is an important piece of history but it needs than a professional football pitch! One researcher studying the tapestry Success Criteria -use the information in the text to answer the questions counted 626 human figures, 202 horses, 55 dogs, and 505 other animals. -skim read to find the answers The Story Think of the tapestry as the first ever comic strip. It shows the Norman conquest of England in 1066. It was commissioned by the winners of the invasion (the Normans) and attempts to justify William of Normandy’s invasion. The tapestry starts by showing Duke Harold Godwinson, the brother-in-law to the English king, Edward the Confessor. Harold had been shipwrecked off the coast of France in 1064. He was rescued by William, Duke of Normandy and the tapestry shows Harold swearing an oath to William to support William’s claim to the English throne. There is some doubt as to whether this oath was actually made or was just made up to bolster William’s claim to the throne. The tapestry then shows William preparing to invade England and then setting sail for England. The final scenes of the tapestry show the Battle of Hastings. One of the scenes shows the death of Harold (who, at this point, was the king of England). The tapestry shows Godwinson getting an arrow through his eye. There is some debate as to whether the figure depicted in the tapestry is Godwinson but we do know Godwinson definitely died during the Battle of Hastings. There is another figure that is being shown cut down by a Norman horseman which some scholars think could also be Harold. Some scholars believe that the missing piece of the tapestry showed William being crowned king. Where was it made? Just as people are unclear about who commissioned the tapestry to be made, people are also unclear about where it was made. Most scholars agree that the tapestry was made in England given the recognized skill of women embroiderers in England. In addition, the names were spelled in the English style of Latin. The Bayeux tapestry is an important piece of history but it needs to be remembered that it was commissioned by the winners and therefore, some of the information may be biased.

    Colchester Borough Council Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service A SHORT HISTORY OF COLCHESTER CASTLE 1066, the defeat of the English by the invading army of Duke William of Normandy. After his victory at the Battle of Hastings, William strengthened his hold on the defeated English by ordering castles to be built throughout the country. Colchester was chosen for its port and its important military position controlling the southern access to East Anglia. In 1076 work began on Colchester Castle, the first royal stone castle to be built by William in England. The castle was built around the ruins of the colossal Temple of Claudius using the Roman temple vaults as its base, parts of which can be seen to this day. As a result the castle is the largest ever built by the Normans. It was constructed mainly of building material from Colchester's Roman ruins with some imported stone. Most of the red brick in the castle was taken from Roman buildings. England, William's newly won possession, was soon under threat from another invader, King Cnut of Denmark. The castle had only been built to first floor level when it had to be hastily strengthened with battlements. The invasion never came and work resumed on the castle which was finally completed to three or four storeys in 1125. The castle came under attack in 1216 when it was besieged for three months and eventually captured by King John after he broke his agreement with the rebellious nobles (Magna Carta). By 1350, however, its military importance had declined and the building was mainly used as a prison.

    The Colchester foundries. August 2018 Joseph Wallis The foundry at the west end of the High Street was built by Joseph Wallis C1792 on land owned by the Winnock Charity as an adjunct to his ironmongery business and under various owners itremained in operation until 1920. His home was at no 5 North Hill which has most attractive cast iron balconies and a foliated tie plate dated to 1809. His most celebrated work are the set of cast iron columns from 1819 that support the colonnade of the Essex Fire Office in the High Street. The iron clad wall plate would also have been cast by his foundry. His was also responsible for the very beautiful castings of the Royal Coat of Arms to be found in some churches in the area as well as the Castle Museum. He died in 1827. Richard Coleman The Richard Coleman foundry was started at the Hythe in 1807 although he already had retail premises in Wyre Street and a warehouse. As iron and coal came by river to the Hythe it was cheaper and easier to build there and Wallis also built a foundry nearby in 1810. Coleman cast the railings for All Saints Church at the Hythe and his surviving other works include St Martin church gates, his own foundry gates in the Museum collection and those at Spring House, Lexden. It is argued that Henry’s succession to the throne was a demonstration of the complicated interaction between hereditary right, designation, and election. It is argued that the distribution of power within the government was, for the most part, ill-defined and varied throughout the minority’s course. It is also argued that there was a fundamental uncertainty about when the minority would end and what role Henry himself would play during the minority. Taken together, it is argued, these demonstrate that Henry’s minority was more of a political settlement than a constitutional settlement. This does not mean that England had no constitution during the thirteenth century but merely that it was more sensitive to the political dynamics of the time than perhaps modern constitutions are and that, compared to modern constitutions, it was much less well defined and lacking a clear unified philosophy.
