Racial Gatekeeping in Country & Hip-Hop Music By Cervanté Pope Student ID #: 947767021 Portland State University Pope 2 Introduction In mass communication, gatekeeping refers to how information is edited, shaped and controlled in efforts to construct a “social reality” (Shoemaker, Eichholz, Kim, & Wrigley, 2001). Gatekeeping has expanded into other fields throughout the years, with its concepts growing more and more easily applicable in many other aspects of life. One way it presents itself is in regard to racial inclusion and equality, and despite the headway we’ve seemingly made as a society, we are still lightyears away from where we need to be. Because of this, the concept of cultural property has become even more paramount, as a means for keeping one’s cultural history and identity preserved. -

D. Dominick Lombardi: Kathryn E. Delmez on Carrie Mae Weems at the Frist 1/4/13 12:13 PM January 4, 2013 Kathryn E. Delmez on Carrie Mae Weems at the Frist Posted: 09/07/2012 7:22 pm I would be hard pressed to think of anyone in the visual arts who has done more to make public the centuries old discrimination of race and gender, the oppressive effects of power, the intricacies of domesticity and our general sense of place as human beings than Carrie Mae Weems. As we are only about one year apart in age, I can remember quite well the level of racial inequality that Ms. Weems was born into. I can also remember very clearly, the buzz created when a non-stereotypical, everyday African American housewife appeared in a laundry soap commercial for the first time. It was a 1970, Wisk detergent television advertisement, and since I lived in a largely white community defined by hardworking blue and white collar husbands paired with stay-at-home, home- maker wives, the vocal backlash that ensued could generally be placed into the category of "what is the world coming to?" When you think about how systemic and ingrained the feelings, subtle or profound, were regarding race, gender and the system of power built upon those prejudices that Ms. Weems addressed all those years ago a very different, very intense level of strength and courage emerges. Yes, it's true that the Civil Rights movement had already begun, and was gaining worldwide recognition and ground every day. -
Lil Nas X in December 2018, Atlanta Rapper Lil Nas X Released His Hit Single “Old Town Road,” Which Some Have Described As Country Trap
Station 5: Lil Nas X In December 2018, Atlanta rapper Lil Nas X released his hit single “Old Town Road,” which some have described as country trap. In spite of the song containing elements of traditional country songs, the song was removed from the Billboard Hot Country charts igniting controversy and discussion about how country is categorized. The song went on to become the longest running number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Read the article below and answer the questions that follow. Lil Nas X: How the West Was Won Blazing the trail for a new kind of cowboy, Lil Nas X is the viral star whose country-trap sound brought chaos to Nashville, and sent thunder through the internet By Jack Mills, Dazed Digital, July 30, 2019 At the end of last year, the myth of the ‘lonesome cowboy’ crept into the imagination of a 19-year-old rapper from the Atlanta suburbs. “I literally saw myself in a movie,” he recalls, “a loner cowboy western. I wanted to run away from everything.” Montero Lamar Hill – now better known as Lil Nas X... When Hill enters the red clay set for the video to “Old Town Road” – which co-stars Diplo, Vince Staples and Chris Rock – he isn’t just wearing spurs and fringed chaps, the usual cowboy getup. He’d had Indiana-based designers Union Western imagine a black suit embroidered with racing- pink and electric-blue unicorns – the kind made for events such as the Rose Parade, where prestigious carriages lined the streets of Pasadena. -

Nashville Community Theatre: from the Little Theatre Guild
NASHVILLE COMMUNITY THEATRE: FROM THE LITTLE THEATRE GUILD TO THE NASHVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE A THESIS IN Theatre History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri – Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by ANDREA ANDERSON B.A., Trevecca Nazarene University, 2003 Kansas City, Missouri 2012 © 2012 ANDREA JANE ANDERSON ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE LITTLE THEATRE MOVEMENT IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: THE LITTLE THEATRE GUILD AND THE NASHVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE Andrea Jane Anderson, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT In the early 20th century the Little Theatre Movement swept through the United States. Theatre enthusiasts in cities and towns across the country sought to raise the standards of theatrical productions by creating quality volunteer-driven theatre companies that not only entertained, but also became an integral part of the local community. This paper focuses on two such groups in the city of Nashville, Tennessee: the Little Theatre Guild of Nashville (later the Nashville Little Theatre) and the Nashville Community Playhouse. Both groups shared ties to the national movement and showed a dedication for producing the most current and relevant plays of the day. In this paper the formation, activities, and closure of both groups are discussed as well as their impact on the current generation of theatre artists. iii APPROVAL PAGE The faculty listed below, appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, have examined a thesis titled “Nashville Community Theatre: From the Little Theatre Guild to the Nashville Community Playhouse,” presented by Andrea Jane Anderson, candidate for the Master of Arts degree, and certify that in their opinion it is worthy of acceptance. -

Philip Martin Gallery 2712 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034 philipmartingallery.com 310 559 0100 Philip Martin Gallery Rihanna is ready. First she moved our interview from Thursday to Wednesday. Then from evening to afternoon. When I get word of this latest change, on a slick and humid August day in Los Angeles, I have just enough time to shower and get to the Hotel Bel-Air. Waiting for Rihanna is practically a journalistic genre all its own. That the Barbadian superstar is now running ahead of schedule seems evidence of her new life as global fashion mogul. Only three and a half years have passed since she presented her first Fenty x Puma collection at New York Fashion Week, a vision of gothleisure delivered to a clamoring world (“if the Addams Family went to the gym” was how she put it). At the time, design was something she was trying on; over the following year, Puma’s profits rose by 92 percent. Since then the 31-year-old has done nothing less than upend the beauty and lingerie industries. In 2017 Fenty Beauty introduced 40 shades of foundation in a business where a dozen was the norm—making a reported $100 million in the first 40 days and nearly $600 million in the first year. Dior, CoverGirl, and Revlon quickly followed, establishing a 40-shade standard now known as “the Fenty effect.” (Rihanna upped the ante again this summer with a hydrating foundation in 50 shades, writing on Instagram, “When the foundation takeova ain’t ova!”) In 2018 she unveiled Savage X Fenty, an intimates line available in many sizes and shades of “nude.” (The brand just secured a reported $50 million in new funding.) Now Rihanna is reimagining fashion at the highest levels. -
The Extremes of Rap on Trial: an Analysis of the Movement to Ban Rap Lyrics As Evidence
The Extremes of Rap on Trial: An Analysis of the Movement to Ban Rap Lyrics as Evidence * MICHAEL CONKLIN This Article is a review of Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America. The book largely focuses on the dangers of allowing rap lyrics to be presented as evidence in criminal trials. The authors posit that the fictitious and hyperbolic nature of rap lyrics are misrepresented by prosecutors as autobiographical confessions that document illegal activity and violent character traits of defendants. The authors compare rap to other musical genres and conclude that racism is the underlying cause for why the genres are treated differently in court. The authors also advocate for evidence nullification and argue for a complete ban on all rap-related evidence at trial. This Article assesses both the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence presented to support these claims. Furthermore, this Article discusses pragmatic issues such as how the author’s advocacy for their more extreme proposals may be counterproductive to enacting their more reasonable proposals. INTRODUCTION This Article is a review of Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America, written by University of Richmond professor Erik Nielson and University of Georgia Law School professor Andrea L. Dennis.1 The book largely focuses on the dangers of allowing rap lyrics to be presented in criminal trials—what the authors refer to as “rap on trial.” The authors posit that the fictitious and hyperbolic nature of rap lyrics are misrepresented by prosecutors as autobiographical confessions that document illegal activity and violent character traits of defendants. -
