Most of the orphans cannot be introduced back into the wild, as other elephant family groups will not accept them. They enjoy a good life with their human parents, and many find good foster homes in zoos around the world. It is more interesting to visit an Orphanage at feeding or bathing time. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO) is a captive elephant based recreation facility. The objective of this study was to gather baseline information for a visitor management plan through a questionnaire survey. The mean monthly number of visitors was 43,725, of which 72% were Sri Lankans. Peak visitation occurred in August and the lowest in November. More than 90% visited as groups. Most (91%) arrived by road. Observing juvenile elephants being bottle-fed was the most attractive experience. Almost all visitors indicated a desire to revisit, but only around 50% did. Nearly 80% were dissatisfied with the facilities provided. Safe structures for viewing elephants, information about elephants and better guidance to the facility, affordable restaurants and safe parking are suggested to enhance visitor experience. Brown4 Abstract Background: Previous studies have established ovarian cycle characteristics of adult Asian elephants using progestagen analyses, but little work has been done on young elephants to determine age at puberty. Demographic studies of wild Asian elephants suggest females give birth at about 12–18 years of age (conceiving at 10–16 years of age based on a 2-year gestation). However, there are a few examples of zoo elephants giving birth at only 5–6 years of age, so they would have started cycling much earlier. This study was carried out at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage (PEO) in Sri Lanka, where a herd of >80 captive elephants breeds successfully, resulting in a unique opportunity to monitor hormones and document initiation of ovarian cyclicity in young females, thus contributing to the normative reproductive database for this species. Results: We measured serum progestagens in samples collected every 10 days for 18 – 24 months from 11 females (3.5–15 years of age), and found six (5.5 – 12 years of age) already were cycling at study onset. Four females started cycling during the study at 4.5, 5.5, 7.5 and 15 years of age. There were no quantitative or qualitative differences between the first pubertal luteal phase and those of subsequent cycles.

Since the displacement is a life changing event, the attention should be focused to address all aspects of restoration of lives such as building houses, establishing livelihood opportunities, rehabilitation and reintegration in the process of relocation. In order to address the relocation issues and challenges for seeking durable solutions, community based strategies are most welcome in contemporary disaster management plans. In addition to examine the failures of existing relocation programmes, this study has attempted to investigate one of the neglected aspects of restoring displaced lives in the recovery phase of disaster management cycle; post-relocation satisfaction. The methodology has initially been designed based on qualitative approach focusing 72 households selected through judgment sampling from six relocated housing schemes after the massive landslide occurred in 2016 at Aranayaka division in Kegalle District, Sri Lanka. Both quantitative and qualitative techniques have been used for data collection through questionnaires, structural interviews, semi structural interviews and case studies while descriptive data analytical methods applied particularly for case study interpretation. The research results revealed that, this unexpected landslide hazard has created several socio-economic constraints which cause to accelerate the relocation issues.
