Omslag_FEB08_mj.inx 2 08-01-15 16.02.07 Welcome aboard For your enjoyment on board this aircraft, SAS has provided first-class entertainment. Using touch-screen technology, choose your own entertainment directly on your personal video screen. Alternatively, you can use your personal handset to navigate around the screen and make your choices. We have provided a variety of movies, audio programs and games, as well as information on the progress of your flight. Before take-off, the forward-looking camera and the moving map are available on all seatback-mounted video screens. Just reach out and touch the screen to activate it. Once airborne, armrest-mounted screens may be used. The downward-looking camera will now be activated and the moving map channel will continually be updated to let you know where you are, how far it is to your destination, and to display other relevant flight information as well as video information programs relating to your flight. To tune in to the soundtrack for a video program being displayed on the overhead monitors, select Flight Information and press Moving Map on your personal video screen. Once the aircraft has reached its first cruising level, the entertainment system is switched on. You will now have a large choice of movies, audio entertainment and games. The movie choices include your favorites, ranging from dramas and comedies to nature and science programs. The audio choices offer a wide selection, from children's stories to chart-topping hits to classical music. For the young and young-at-heart, try the Games option. Use your personal handset and you'll be at your destination before you know it! Video on demand. We are improving our entertainment system even more by installing video and audio on demand. This means you can start the movie or audio channel of your choice, take a pause to stretch your legs and then pick up where you left off when you return to your seat. If you get stuck, just touch the Help button on the Main Menu for on-screen assistance. The entertainment system will be closed down 30 minutes before landing. We hope you have a pleasant flight. Michael Clayton SAS sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused by failure of the In-Flight Entertainment System or any of its components. We will, of course, do our best to try to solve any problems that may arise. However, SAS disclaims any and all liability for failures in the System, and no monetary compensation will be payable in the event of such failures. • Neglected Jazz Figures of the 1950S and Early 1960S New World NW 275
Introspection: Neglected Jazz Figures of the 1950s and early 1960s New World NW 275 In the contemporary world of platinum albums and music stations that have adopted limited programming (such as choosing from the Top Forty), even the most acclaimed jazz geniuses—the Armstrongs, Ellingtons, and Parkers—are neglected in terms of the amount of their music that gets heard. Acknowledgment by critics and historians works against neglect, of course, but is no guarantee that a musician will be heard either, just as a few records issued under someone’s name are not truly synonymous with attention. In this album we are concerned with musicians who have found it difficult—occasionally impossible—to record and publicly perform their own music. These six men, who by no means exhaust the legion of the neglected, are linked by the individuality and high quality of their conceptions, as well as by the tenaciousness of their struggle to maintain those conceptions in a world that at best has remained indifferent. Such perseverance in a hostile environment suggests the familiar melodramatic narrative of the suffering artist, and indeed these men have endured a disproportionate share of misfortunes and horrors. That four of the six are now dead indicates the severity of the struggle; the enduring strength of their music, however, is proof that none of these artists was ultimately defeated. Selecting the fifties and sixties as the focus for our investigation is hardly mandatory, for we might look back to earlier years and consider such players as Joe Smith (1902-1937), the supremely lyrical trumpeter who contributed so much to the music of Bessie Smith and Fletcher Henderson; or Dick Wilson (1911-1941), the promising tenor saxophonist featured with Andy Kirk’s Clouds of Joy; or Frankie Newton (1906-1954), whose unique muted-trumpet sound was overlooked during the swing era and whose leftist politics contributed to further neglect.

PLAYING AGAINST THE ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1. The roof of Daniel and Estrella’s old apartment complex. DANIEL: Estrella! Why did you want to meet here? We’re going to miss the party! ESTRELLA: Can you believe how much this place has changed? DANIEL: I don’t even recognize it. ESTRELLA: It’s all so… white. It used to be filled with smells and sounds and people. DANIEL: Like the sounds of my terrible violin playing. ESTRELLA: I remember the smells that came from those windows. Mi abuela cooking (She pauses and smells the air) mole and fresh tortillas, and elote, and capirotada. DANIEL and ESTRELLA: and that awful Posole. They both make a face. DANIEL: We played for hours. ESTRELLA: With my Barbies. DANIEL: They were rich. ESTRELLA: and they had a swimming pool and like 10 kids and they always fought. DANIEL: Like my mom and dad. Before he left… ESTRELLA: but remember… we would run away and sneak out. DANIEL: And just lay up here and just look at the stars. They sit in silence remembering the past. DANIEL: You know… in a new place, you can be anyone you want. ESTRELLA: Easy for you to say, ”Dannie Beckerman football star.” (She laughs to herself) DANIEL: Speaking of… that party. You promised you’d come. ESTRELLA: I know. Just one more minute. 1 Scene 2 Scene 1. Friday Night. A teenage house party. We hear bumpin music, perhaps something by Drake or Kanye. DANIEL AND ESTRELLA enter the party. There are groups of mostly McGregor High School students scattered about the room laughing and talking loudly.

To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors.
