YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

  • 40Th Anniversary Reunion (DVD) Page 1 of 2
FAME Review: Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - 40th Anniversary Reunion (DVD) Page 1 of 2 FAME Review: Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - 40th Anniversary Reunion (DVD) 40th Anniversary Reunion Emerson, Lake, & Palmer MVD Visual - MVD5219D (DVD) Available from ELP's web store . A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mark S. Tucker ([email protected] ). While I was ecstatically getting my brain razed by some of the latest NuProgressives (Chocolate Horses and Nerves Junior being two of the most recent and among the best), this MVD DVD providentially came my way as kind of a subtle grail, a piece of the true cross, a time machine back to where it all started. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer have reigned as co-equal kings among a coterie of legendary ensembles from an age when unbelievable intelligence, talent, and musical mastery held sway, a time that sadly waned as the shenanigans of punk took over (a regicide happily and speedily failed, as we've seen), and is now in the last gasps of its glory. Before Jorden Rudess, Vitali Kuprij, and others arose, Keith Emerson, Jon Lord, Kerry Minear, Mike Pinder, and sundry geniuses established what virtuosity meant in a rock keyboardist. Before Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, and other skins-pounders took over the reins, Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, and others were the drummers to be feared and admired. And when it came to the bass guitar, Greg Lake, Colin Hodgkinson, and Percy Jones preceded Flea and the gaggle of modern day four- stringers. There are aways antecedents. Earlier, Emerson fulfilled a dream we progheads have long held: the reunion of his pre-ELP band, The Nice, and, man, was it ever a rare thrill to see Keith, Brian Davison, and Lee Jackson making music again (if you're a Nice fan, check out the hideously cool Microwerks Diamond Hard Blue Apples of the Moon 2-CD issuance of 'bootleg' materials from the original 60s Nice).

  • Review English Paola Tagliaferro Sings Greg Raffaele Astore
Review English Paola Tagliaferro Sings Greg Raffaele Astore | Psycanprog PAOLA TAGLIAFERRO- LA COMPAGNIA DELL’ES PAOLA TAGLIAFERRO SINGS GREG LAKE (2021) Rating: Very Good 5/6 I have reviewed Paola Tagliaferro’s first work, Fabulae, a record where soundscapes and rhythms from all over the world merge, masterfully amalgamated with profound lyrics in the best tradition of Keats, Byron and others. It truly inspires me, among the many records we share with our readers. This new production by Paola Tagliaferro Sings Greg Lake - La Compagnia Dell’Es which, while proposing in a completely personal key ten pieces reinterpreted as only she knows how to do, brings us back to a time which is always pleasant to relive. In addition to taking us on this fantastic journey through time, Paola offers us her interpretation of songs which have not just significantly impacted rock music, but music as a whole. We also gain an insight into Lake who holds such high esteem within the music industry by being a key part of the great bands we all recognise. It is also fascinating to gain an insight into her new album Paola Tagliaferro Sings Greg Lake - La Compagnia Dell’Es through her perspective. She says: I never imagined making an album dedicated to already famous songs by a great author when I met Greg Lake and his wife Regina back in 2012. From that moment on, I kept in contact with Greg until shortly before his death. Regina was the one who suggested in 2019 that it would be great if I made an album “ PAOLA TAGLIAFERRO SINGS GREG LAKE”.

  • Forms of Intertextuality: Keith Emerson’S Development As a “Crossover” Musician
FORMS OF INTERTEXTUALITY: KEITH EMERSON’S DEVELOPMENT AS A “CROSSOVER” MUSICIAN Akitsugu Kawamoto A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2006 Approved by Advisor: John Covach Reader: John Nádas Reader: Severine Neff Reader: Allen Anderson Reader: David Garcia © 2006 Akitsugu Kawamoto ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT AKITSUGU KAWAMOTO: Forms of Intertextuality: Keith Emerson’s Development as a “Crossover” Musician (Under the direction of John Covach) Despite the broad range of attempts to mix “rock” and “classical” music by “progressive (“prog”) rock” musicians from the late 1960s, many writers on prog rock have interpreted the music in a relatively monolithic manner; they often have interpreted the resulting intertextuality simplistically as an elitist experiment that opposes rock’s populist origin. This could certainly be one interpretation of prog, but it is only one of many; there are additional kinds of possible narratives, according to the specific ways in which the materials are combined and fused. Yet the variety of intertextual approaches has rarely been recognized explicitly, and little analytical or musicological attention has been paid to the distinctly different intertextual styles. Generalized approaches to intertextuality have been common not only within popular music studies, however, but also within many humanistic fields. Since Julia Kristeva’s coinage of the term intertextuality in the late 1960s, theorists of the arts (literature, music, painting, architecture, etc.), sociology, politics, economics, and many other fields, have almost always treated intertextuality in a singular manner, presuming that all intertextual practices are more or less of the same kind.

  • The Published Music of Keith Emerson: Expanding the Solo Piano
THE PUBLISHED MUSIC OF KEITH EMERSON: EXPANDING THE SOLO PIANO REPERTOIRE by GIUSEPPE LUPIS (Under the Direction of Richard Zimdars) ABSTRACT The study examines the published music of Keith Emerson (b.1944) and includes solo piano transcriptions of thirteen of his compositions. Emerson’s music was published on three continents over a period of thirty years (1975-2005). Because almost all of it is currently out of print, a need exists for a cataloguing and a rediscovery of his music. The work is in five chapters. The first, a short biography, examines Emerson as a composer. The second addresses the importance of Emerson’s music. The third covers the sources of Emerson’s published compositions and a performance and recording history of Emerson’s music performed by pianists other than the composer. The fourth chapter surveys thirteen compositions which appear as solo piano transcriptions in the fifth chapter. • Welcome Back, My Friends, to Greg Lake's Songs of a Lifetime
Welcome back, my friends, to Greg Lake's Songs of a Lifetime By John Costello For fans of Greg Lake from his years with King Crimson, Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) and as a solo artist, it probably has seemed like a long wait for another "show that never ends" of any kind. Lake, who will bring his Songs of a Lifetime tour to the Varsity Theater May 10, was last seen and heard live in the Twin Cities in 2001 when he was a member of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. "I did a tour a while back with Ringo, and of course the Beatles' music has penetrated everywhere into people's lives and, thank goodness, that is one of the lovely byproducts of being in the music business," he commented. Besides remembering Ringo, Lake will share his unique recollections of Jimi Hendrix, Elvis and others throughout the performance, which will not only include some of the best-known songs from his days with King Crimson and ELP, such as In The Court of the Crimson King, Lucky Man and From The Beginning, but will also feature songs by other artists that have influenced his musical career over the years. Greg gave a very detailed answer when he was asked whether he would perform the ELP song Take a Pebble, which would seem to perfectly fit the tour's theme with its thought-provoking lyrics: "Just take a pebble and cast it to the sea/Then watch the ripples that unfold into me/My face spill so gently into your eyes/Disturbing the waters of our lives." "The way this tour came about was, I just finished writing an autobiography which, rather unsurprisingly, is called Lucky Man," Lake replied.
