Riff Types, Timekeeping Cymbals, and Time Feels in Contemporary Metal Music
Transcending Time (Feels): Riff Types, Timekeeping Cymbals, and Time Feels in Contemporary Metal Music Jose M. Garza, Jr. NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: hps://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.21.27.1/mto.21.27.1.garza.php KEYWORDS: heavy metal, rhythm and meter, time feels, riff, drums, cymbals, popular music, subgenres ABSTRACT: Over the past fifteen years, much of the music-theoretical scholarship on heavy metal has addressed metric processes (Lucas 2019, Capuzzo 2018, Hannan 2018, Lucas 2018, Lennard 2016, Smialek 2008, Pieslak 2007) and the use of the voice (Smialek 2017, Young 2018). A significant portion of the literature deals with the band Meshuggah, but the music of countless artists scaered across manifold subgenres remains unexplored. Widening the focus on such a large repertoire not only helps remedy this issue, but serves to inform one recent music-theoretical topic that relies on a broad stylistic understanding: time feels. To date, scholars have mainly limited the discussion of time feels to the kick and snare drums (e.g., de Clercq 2016), and indeed, these instruments ultimately determine a feel. I argue, however, that different uses of guitar, bass, and cymbals can reinforce, clarify, or contradict the feel laid down by the kick and snare. In this article, I describe several categories of guitar and bass riff types and timekeeping cymbals. I then discuss how their associations with certain time-feel contexts inform further analyses. To this end, I draw from post- millennial metal music in various subgenres including black metal, death metal, doom metal, grindcore, metalcore, progressive metal, sludge metal, and thrash metal. -

It is a complex amplification of heavy metal that has garnered increased attention during the last two decades due to some bands becoming more popular and accessible than anticipated for the styles it comprises. Although women have a small but steady presence in heavy metal, this number shrinks when applied to extreme metal - a subculture which has typically been coded as a masculine domain (Purcell 2003; Kahn-Harris 2007; Walser 1993; Weinstein 1991). For women, participating in such an overwhelmingly male-coded environment can incur sexism, marginalization, and misogyny. -

!1 Discordant Systems: Uses and Meanings of Rhythmic Difficulty in the Music of Meshuggah and Related Extreme and Progressive Metal Bands A Distinguished Major Thesis presented by Calder Hannan to The Department of Music University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia May 2017 !2 Abstract In this thesis, I present a series of close readings of metal texts chosen for their rhythmic difficulty. In the first chapter, I address use of polymeter and hypermeter in the music of the metal bands Meshuggah and Intronaut. I draw conclusions about the many complicating factors involved in conceptualizing Meshuggah’s core rhythmic style, the importance of the consistent use of this style in determining meaning, and compare the meanings expressed in Meshuggah’s music to the very different ones expressed in Intronaut’s music. In the second chapter, I address several instances of tempo ambiguity and tempo change taken from the music of the bands Gojira, Meshuggah, The Contortionist, Animals As Leaders, TesseracT, and Car Bomb. I explore different types of tempo ambiguity and change and their implications for perceptions and conceptions of tempo, pulse, and meter, as well as specific meanings tied more closely to the details of each song. In the third chapter, I address two more songs in which rhythmic difficulty is created by a lack of pattern and/or pulse. I comment on the ways that rhythm can express randomness, its potential for expressing chaos, and the very different ways in which these techniques are central to the images of the bands Meshuggah and The Dillinger Escape Plan. I conclude by drawing attention to a theorized link between heaviness (as in “heavy” metal) and disorientation caused by rhythmic complexity, as well as examining the implications of my analysis and synthesizing with the work of others to draw conclusions about the social place of the type of metal I discuss in the broader musical world. -

Acknowledgments Cordially, I would like to thank Professor Anabela Dinis for accepting my research proposal, providing me with the opportunity to learn and grow, both academically and personally. It was an enduring and time-consuming process but it was worth it! I am especially grateful to all the people I had the pleasure to meet throughout my research and data collection, in particular, to Toni-Matti Karjalainen for his availability, friendly reception, enthusiasm, support and valuable help in getting the right contacts. Thank you very much! Without your help this would be a lot harder to accomplish! I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the guys that accepted making part of this study with their bands and spared some of their precious time to meet and talk with me.
