MLRA notes Major Land Resource Area (MLRA): 031X–Lower Colorado Desert MLRA Description: Major land resource area (MLRA) 31 is the Lower Colorado Desert. This area is in the extreme southeastern part of California, in areas along the Colorado River, and in Western Arizona. The area is comprised of rough, barren, steep, and strongly dissected mountain ranges, generally northwest to southwest trending that are separated by intermontane basins. Elevation ranges from approximately 275 feet below sea level at the lowest point in the Salton Trough to 2700 feet along low northwest to southeast trending mountain ranges. The average annual precipitation is 2 to 6 inches with high temporal and spatial variability. Winter temperatures are mild, summer temperatures are hot, and seasonal and diurnal temperature fluctuations are large. Monthly minimum temperature averages range from 40 to 80 degrees F (4 to 27 degrees C). Monthly maximum temperature averages range from 65 to 110 degrees F (18 to 43 degrees C) (WRCC 2002). -

Beginningvery narrowlyin the Santa Barbararegion, it is bestdeveloped in Ventura,Los Angeles,Orange, and San Diegocounties, and endsin northwesternBaja California,where a differentplant assemblage,the maritimedesert scrub, begins(Thorne 1976). One very prominentfeature of coastalsage scrub is thicketsof cactus,including the CoastalCholla, Opun tia prolifera, and two speciesof prickly-pears,Opuntia littoralis and O. oricola. The coastalsage scrub is the primary habitat of two birds, the California Gnatcatcher, Polioptila californica californica, and the San Diego Cactus Wren, Campylorhynchusbrunneicapillus sandiegensis, that are decliningrap- idlybecause of lossof habitatto urbanization.(For explanationof variations in the spellingof the CactusWren's scientificname, see Appendix 1). This paper hasfour goals.First, we presentthe charactersdistinguishing C. b. sandiegensisas a validsubspecies distinct from adjacentraces of Baja Californiaand the interiorcontinental deserts. The charactersare givenin sufficientdetail that anyone with a specimenin hand shouldbe able to identifyit. Second,we evaluatethe taxonomicstatus of the CactusWrens occupyingVentura, Los Angeles,and Orange counties.In the original description (Rea 1986:119), these were referred to as less typical sandiegensis,and the birdsfrom the San FernandoValley, Los Angeles Co., were called anthonyi (Phillips 1986:120). Third, we analyze the habitatrequirements of C. b. sandiegensis.And finally,we presentcensus data from the last ten years demonstratingthe rapid declineof the San Diego CactusWren due to habitatloss. -

Three quarterly reports have previously been prepared by RECON in 2012. Information from those reports is summarized below for tasks completed between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012. This annual report also summarizes the results of the relevé vegetation surveys that were conducted in spring 2012 at the treatment sites, as well as the results of the bird point count monitoring. The Central City Preserve is in the central portion of the city of Chula Vista, east of Interstate 805, south of State Route 54 and Bonita Road, and north of Otay Lakes Road (Figure 1; see Attachment 1 for all Figures and Photographs). -

Desert Botanical Garden LEO MARTIN’S BIOGRAPHY Leo Martin began learning vegetable, ornamental and house plant cultivation from his mother and grandmothers at age 4. His earliest plant interest was cacti and other succulents. He has gardened in southern and northern California, the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest and the Sonoran Desert. Aside from cacti, he grows cycads, geophytes, various tropical plants, orchids, an extensive fruit orchard, and aquatic plants. He grows many of his plants from seed. Leo served on the Board of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America (CSSA) for nine years. He oversaw publication of the Journal of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America, the scientific annual Haseltonia, and was Convention Program Chair. He has served the Central Arizona Cactus and Succulent Society as Board member, President, Web master and Show & Sale Chair, and has offered workshops on winter-rainfall bulb growing to the CACSS. He has written many articles for the newsletters of the Henry Shaw Cactus Society in St Louis, as well as the Central Spine.
