Composer John Willsteed: Willsteed has a detailed wiki listing here, and he had a QUT listing here, which included this short profile: John Willsteed remembers most of a long and varied career as a musician, travelling the world and leaving a legacy of hummable bass-lines. He has performed with many iconic Australian acts including The Go-Betweens, The Apartments, The Riptides and Ed Kuepper. He has been a guitarist in award winning Brisbane band Halfway since 2010. He is a graduate of the AFTRS, Griffith University and QUT, and has an abiding interest in the musical history of his hometown (Brisbane) and the ways in which it might be told. As a sound editor and composer he has received national and international awards including three AFI Awards for sound. Willsteed also embodies a deep commitment to the wider concept and reality of the creative industries. He has acted on the board of QPIX and was state representative of the Australian Screen Sound Guild. He has been president of Feral Arts management committee since 2005, and currently serves on the board of the Queensland Music Festival. Career History He has been a teacher at private film schools, TAFE and universities since 2000 and his current role at QUT is Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative Practice. Apartment living quickly became a sought-after accommodation choice and was soon labelled as the cutting edge of Australian Modernism. The first round of apartment developments in Sydney lasted for approximately three decades before stalling with the beginning of the Great Depression. At the same time, Sydney was characterised as having low-density residential suburbs, high levels of home ownership and high general standards of well-being. Suburbia had a romantic notion, and the inner-city was losing favour with the growing numbers of homeowners, who saw higher density living as fostering slums, crime and immorality. The apartments modernism could not compete with the new shining suburbs or with the Government reforms and their push for suburbia while moving away from apartment living. The suburbs became the ideological heartland of Australian neoliberalism and high-density inner-city areas even those in the most desirable locations and inhabited by the wealthy middle class, became condemned as “slums of the future” and “un-Australian”.

Very few studies have explored the specific demand characteristics of apartments, which house a growing proportion of the global urban population. We present a study of apartment electricity loads, using a dataset containing a year of half-hourly electricity data for 6000 Australian households, to examine the relationship between dwelling type, demographic characteristics and load profile. The focus on apartments, combined with the size of the data set, and the representative seasonal load profiles obtained through clustering full annual profiles, is unique in the literature. We find that median per-occupant household electricity use is 21% lower for apartments than for houses and that, on average, apartments have lower load factor and higher daily load variability, and show greater diversity in their daily peak times, resulting in a lower coincidence factor for aggregations of apartment loads.

    THE BRISBANE SOUND Scott Bradley Regan BMus, BMus (Hons) DOCTORAL THESIS By CREATIVE WORKS Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology 2019 Abstract What is the Brisbane Sound, and what does it actually sound like? Many cities are said to have their own musical ‘sound’, for example, the Liverpool Sound (Cohen 1994), the Dunedin Sound (McLeay 1994; Mitchell 1996; Bannister 2006), and the Canterbury Sound (Bennett 2002). Brisbane, Australia is no different. Since the late 1970s, music journalists and other cultural intermediaries (Bourdieu 1984) have constructed the idea of a ‘Brisbane Sound’, and used it to consecrate a specific cohort of bands that emerged during the ‘five golden years’ of Brisbane music history, between 1978 and 1983. Yet, despite the cultural currency and prevalence of the trope in subcultural parlance, this so-called Brisbane Sound has remained entirely absent from existing scholarly literature about the local Brisbane music scene. This Doctoral Thesis by Creative Works aims to remedy this gap, and in doing so, contributes new knowledge to our understanding of Brisbane popular music history and cultural memory. It also proposes a novel way of addressing the perennial conundrum of music’s ineffability, by using music to explain music. I take an interdisciplinary approach to answer the question ‘what does the Brisbane Sound sound like?’ by adapting methods from three key fields: cultural studies, popular musicology, and creative practice. First, I collate and analyse how the Brisbane Sound trope has been defined in media discourses over time.
