Overtone Singing: History, Development, and Influence in Contemporary Music Jocelyn Black Fall 2018 Capstone California State University, Monterey Bay 12-2018 It is believed in Tuvan tradition that all things have a soul or are inhabited by spiritual entities. The Tuva, indigenous peoples of Siberia and central Asia, developed Khöömei, a sacred throat singing technique, to establish contact with these spiritual entities and assimilate their power through the imitation of natural sounds (Cosi and Tisato 3). The Tuvan people believed the ethereal two-toned sound is the way the spirits of nature prefer to use to reveal themselves and to communicate with other living things. Polyphonic overtone singing or throat singing is an elaborate voice technique that is most identified with parts of Central Asia, but it is also practiced in northern Canada by the Inuit Women and by the Xhosa people of South Africa where the technique takes on various styles and meanings.

‘We Gon’ Be Alright’: Kendrick Lamar’s Criticism of Racism and the Potential for Social Change Through Love by Courtney Julia Heffernan B.A. Hons., University of Western Ontario, 2014 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) March 2016 © Courtney Julia Heffernan, 2016 Abstract This thesis explores Kendrick Lamar’s criticism of institutionalized racism in America and its damaging effects on African-American subjectivity on his albums Section.80, Good Kid M.A.A.D City and To Pimp a Butterfly. The albums address the social implications of racism in the present day, throughout Lamar’s life and throughout the lives of his ancestors. In my analysis of Lamar’s albums, I address the history of American chattel slavery and its aftermath as a social system that privileges white over black. On the basis of my interpretation of the penultimate track on To Pimp a Butterfly, “i,” I propose a love ethic as a means through which the American social order can be changed. I take the term love ethic from Cornel West and bell hooks. A love ethic is a means through which individual bodies hurt by racism can be recognized and revalorized. Through the course of his three studio albums Lamar offers a narrative remediation of America’s discriminatory social order. In so doing, Lamar enacts the social change he wishes to see in America. ii Preface This thesis is original, unpublished, independent work by the author, Courtney Heffernan.

Its June! The music world celebrates Black Music Month and the summer festival season starts to heat up. The Playboy Jazz Festival happens in Los Angeles, The Atlanta Jazz Festival just happened a few weeks ago, The Detroit Jazz festival is coming soon, I Got Soul is happening in Dallas. You get the picture. As I write this I am preparing to head to Washington, D.C. for the Capital Jazz Festival. In many ways the Capital Jazz Festival is the embodiment of my “Mature But Not Dead!” credo. You have heard me speak on it before. Powers that be feel that folks over thirty only want to hear old music from back in the day, don’t dance don’t sing along. They only want to sit home and act sullen. I say “No Way” Folks get mature but they are not dead. This years Capital Jazz Festival has artists like Jeffrey Osborne, Howard Hewett, Roberta Flack, Randy Crawford ,Joe Sample and AWB to represent “back in the day” to the fullest. Ledisi, Eric Roberson, Frank McComb, Gordon Chambers, Jimmy Sommers will bring up the emerging newbies. Plunky and Maysa are D.C. area favorites and Boney James, Wayman Tisdale, Brian McKnight and Dianne Reaves are festival staples. Folks get turned on to some new stuff while enjoying their old favorites.
