After 4 months of dieting & gentle exercise, I lost 30 lbs. That was 12 years ago and I have been running ever since & my first race was FancesTown 5 in 1999!

Since my weight loss and healthy training, I have been able to accomplish things I never dreamed possible. I owe this healthy lifestyle to being a mem- ber of the Gate City Striders Running Club. My first track training was 2005 & my current training schedule includes weight lifting 2-3 times/week, run- ning 4 days and spinning once/week.

My other hobbies include fly fishing and hiking. I recently hiked Mount La- fayette with my son, Tim. This was our best father/son day all year. I attrib- ute my health to my son as he inspires and encourages me in all my sporting activities.

Exercise includes all family members. My wife Marian also works out at the gym. This allows her to be more active and benefit from the healthier life- style she achieves. Marian has joined us several of our hiking adventures and supports our activities.

Exercise and marathon running has allowed me to build great friendships. 2007 will mark the 4th year for “One Track Minded” running the Reach the Beach relay race. Our 12 member team runs in relays from Cannon MT. to Hampton beach each September. In addition to this feat of endurance (and lack of sleep for 24 hours), I have run the Mount Washington Road Race, the Hartford Marathon and the Philadelphia Marathon. Some day…….! This is a new invitational, with Middle (Continued on page 18) (Continued from page 17) Schools racing on Friday and High Schools from the Northeast region on Saturday. Earlier in the week Coach Bill was told that Marie Morrier could not run because of a heel problem so that left the team down to 5 runners. Then Katherine Swallow strained a hamstring playing soccer and knew that she couldn’t run at the level that she knows she is capable of. Despite that, all six girls and Gigi Piercy’s mom piled into coach Bill’s van for the 2 hour ride to Goddard Park. Needless to say, the van was rocking all the way down. Marie came along as the team Photographer and Katherine said she would try to run so the team would score.

Before the 6th grade race started, Coach Bill overheard a coach say that he had a runner that might win the race. Coach Bill just smiled. Because they were the first race they didn’t have time for a walk over the 2000 meter course, so Molly McCabe was told to stay with group for the first half of the course which was an open loop and then run as she felt on the second loop which was in the woods. Needless to say, Molly took the lead after about 50 meters and never looked back winning the race in 7:51. So much for coaching advice. Sarah Swallow was the next St Chris runner finishing in 3rd place in 8:04 and Gigi was next in 6th place in 8:20. Katherine ran 8:56 to place 10th in a gutsy performance and Chelsea Shoemaker rounded out the team scoring with a 9:12 for 13th place.

Folks at the finish line kept asking: Who are those girls in the gray shirts (St Chris colors)? The final team score was St Chris 33, Wickford 130 and JH Gaudet 151. Both Molly and Sarah were faster than the winner of the 6th grade boy’s race. After the race was over and the awards given out they all went down the road for pizza before heading back home.
