‘ZERO-WASTE PATTERN CUTTING ACROSS THE WORLD’ 1-Day Course - 18TH MAY

Using garments from The School of Historical Dress Collection, this course will explore the many different ways clothes have been made historically without wasting any fabric. Students will draft several different fabric layouts and make 1/2 scale toiles of them. The garments used in the classroom will include both Western and Non-Western examples from China, Japan, , Bulgaria, India, Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, France and the United Kingdom. Garment types include the shirt, smock, skirt, huipil, trouser, , , choli, and dohti. Some consist of the complete woven cloth width; garments that were woven to shape, or stitched into 3-dimensional shapes by the ingenious and frugal use of squares, rectangles and triangles. There are very few curves.
