Author talk: Robin Hobb discusses new book, “Blood of Dragons” Bestselling fantasy author of Rain Wilds Chronicles will be at the Tumwater library Sat., June 1 International bestselling fantasy author Robin Hobb will be at the Tumwater Timberland Library to talk about her new book, “Blood of Dragons,” the final volume in her series, “Rain Wilds Chronicles.” She will also sign books. Books will be available for purchase. The event will be held on Saturday, June 1 from 2 to 3 p.m. Blood of Dragons completes the story of the dragons, their keepers, and their quest to find the lost city of Kelsingra and the mythical silver wells that could save the dragons from extinction. Hobb’s epic Rain Wilds Chronicles has been praised by Booklist as “one of the most gripping settings in modern fantasy,” and Publishers Weekly called the story “a meticulously realized fantasy tale” and “a welcome addition to contemporary dragon lore.” The first three titles in the series are Dragon Keeper, Dragon Haven and City of Dragons. Hobb has also written four other fantasy series. Hobb was born in California, grew up in Alaska, and currently lives in Tacoma. She also publishes short fiction and contemporary fantasy under the name Megan Lindholm. INSTITUTIONEN FÖR SPRÅK OCH LITTERATURER PATRIARCHY UNDER SCRUTINY Tracing Feminist Discourse in Hobb’s The Realm of the Elderlings Saga Bokne Essay/Degree Project: Masters essay, literary specialisation, 30 credits Program or/and course: EN2M10 Level: Second cycle Term/year: VT 2017 Supervisor: Maria Olaussen Examiner: Ronald Paul Report nr: Abstract Title: “Patriarchy Under Scrutiny: Tracing Feminist Discourse in Hobb’s The Realm of the Elderlings” Author: Saga Bokne Supervisor: Maria Olaussen Abstract: The high fantasy genre has often been accused of conservatism and of perpetuating stereotypes. On the other hand, fantasy has also been noted for its capacity to subvert stereotypes and envision alternatives to the current order. This essay investigates the gender politics of Robin Hobb’s high fantasy series The Realm of the Elderlings, exploring the depiction of patriarchal structures and mechanisms in the work. To illuminate the discussion, Hobb’s series is read alongside a variety of feminist theories, with particular weight attached to Sylvia Walby’s Theorizing Patriarchy (1990). The essay is divided into two parts. The first part considers depictions of patriarchal structures in the series, focusing especially on sexual morality, sexual violence, and the institution of marriage. The second part points to ways in which The Realm of the Elderlings subverts and questions patriarchy by portraying gender as culturally contingent, historically variable, and by emphasising the performative aspect of it. In Hobb’s series, although it makes use of a traditional, pseudo-medieval fantasy world where patriarchy is a stock feature, patriarchy does not merely function as a backdrop. Instead, it is repeatedly thematised and put to scrutiny, its mechanisms exposed, and its basic premises questioned.
