Yet from a contemporary standpoint, the historical narratives prompted in the licensing of her name and image flatten her past into a palatable emblem of 1950s pin-up culture. In this article, I interrogate the ways Page’s image has been mobilized since the 1950s. I propose a cultural biography of Bettie Page attuned to her queer communitarian circulation in order to counter the nostalgic sanitation of her image since the 1990s. In November of 2017, several media industry and gay press news outlets announced that Violet Chachki, drag performer and 2015 RuPaul’s Drag Race season seven champion, would front an advertising campaign for a Bettie Page-inspired lingerie line by London-based brand Playful Promises. -

BCALA and GNCRT May Have Contributed to the Items Listed Here, and May Have Done So on a Voluntary Or Paid Basis
BCALA and the ALA Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table: Afrofuturism Last updated March 15, 2021 For the next iteration of our ongoing collaboration between the Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) and the Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table of the American Library Association (GNCRT), we are presenting themed Black Lives Matter comics reading mini-lists with a continued focus on Black literature. Titles are alphabetically arranged with their target audiences denoted in parentheses: A for Adult, YA for Young Adult, and J for Juvenile. However, many of these stories cross age groups! In addition, each list includes supplementary works for a deeper analysis, and each highlights a Black-owned comics publisher. You may notice that these lists include a slim collection of middle grade titles. This is due to the dearth of readily accessible comics and graphic novels by Black creators by established children’s publishing companies. For younger children, while some board books and picture books may suffice, there is a glaring shortage of middle grade comics and graphic novels by Black creators. Evidence has suggested a significant decline in pleasure reading by age nine (Scholastic’s “Decline By Nine”), a critical year to encourage a lifelong love of reading. As essential discussions are being held surrounding diversity in literature, reluctant readers, and attractive titles for young readers, the necessity for representation must be addressed. We implore publishers to uplift Black voices by hiring Black authors and illustrators to tell Black stories of all genres and topics in which Black readers can see themselves, and readers can view different experiences beyond their own lens. -
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Perfect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Together, this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers. Why you'll like it: Irreverent, comedic science-fiction, the meaning of life. About the Author: Douglas Noel Adams (sometimes referred to Bop Ad because of his distinctive signature) was born in Cambridge, England, on March 11, 1952 and educated at St. John's College at Cambridge University. He graduated with honors in English Literature in 1974. In addition to being a writer/editor for radio, television, and stage, Adams has worked as a hospital reporter, barn builder, and radio producer. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, 1979, one of his bestselling humor and science fiction novels, was originally a radio series. It was the first in a four-book series that includes The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, the Universe, and Everything, and So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish. He once stated that the idea for his first novel came while he was "lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck and gazing at the stars." He pokes fun at humanity by mixing science fiction with humor. Adams's additional books include The Meaning of Liff; The Deeper Meaning of Liff; Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency; The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul; and Mostly Harmless. -

Disney comics from Italy♦ © Francesco Stajano 1997-1999 http://i.am/filologo.disneyano/ A Roberto, amico e cugino So what exactly shall we look at? First of all, the Introduction fascinating “prehistory” (early Thirties) where a few pioneering publishers and creators established a Disney Most of us die-hard Disney fans are in love with those presence in Italy. Then a look at some of the authors, seen comics since our earliest childhood; indeed, many of us through their creations. Because comics are such an learnt to read from the words in Donald’s and Mickey’s obviously visual medium, the graphical artists tend to get balloons. Few of us, though, knew anything about the the lion’s share of the critics’ attention; to compensate for creators of these wonderful comics: they were all this, I have decided to concentrate on the people who calligraphically signed by that “Walt Disney” guy in the actually invent the stories, the script writers (though even first page so we confidently believed that, somewhere in thus I’ve had to miss out many good ones). This seems to America, a man by that name invented and drew each and be a more significant contribution to Disney comics every one of those different stories every week. As we studies since, after all, it will be much easier for you to grew up, the quantity (too many) and quality (too read a lot about the graphical artists somewhere else. And different) of the stories made us realise that this man of course, by discussing stories I will also necessarily could not be doing all this by himself; but still, we touch on the work of the artists anyway. -

One third of what might be a good storyBy Wonder CilantronCollects New Avengers (2013) 7-12I can't recommend this one, since this is only one third of the Infinity crossover story and really doesn't stand by itself. If Marvel also included Infinity #6, you might almost have a complete story, but I'm only guessing here, since I haven't read the entire crossover yet. I did give this book three stars since the individual issues here are pretty good, both art- and story-wise.If you decide to read the Infinity crossover, get the book linked above instead. Also, read New Avengers, Vol. 1: Everything Dies first, since it sets up the whole Incursion business. The hardback version of this does not have a slip cover.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I would not recommend reading this volume alone. You need the full story found in the Infinity collection.By Matt AndersonCollects New Avengers issues #7-12This volume ties in to Marvel's major event of 2013, Infinity. -

INTRODUCTION In October of 2010 the Children’s Book- a-Day Almanac website was launched (chil drensbookalmanac.com); each day since then one essay showcasing one of the gems of children’s literature has been published. Day after day I have been able to connect with readers— to lead them to books that they need and to remind them of the books that have made a difference in the lives of children. I have responded to ques- tions and critiques. I have also had children comment on the Almanac, through their parents and teachers, to inform me how they felt about my choices. All critics need to keep in touch with what happens when the rubber meets the road! As I prepared the fi nal pages for the printed book, I kept thinking about how much my daily Almanac readers have made it a better resource. Although I love the immediacy of cyberspace, I am thrilled to have this book in print. Now readers can easily thumb through and make plans for celebrating their own favorite days in advance. Every day of the calendar year I discuss an appropriate title and then provide information about how it came about, the author, the ideal au- dience, and how the book has connected in a meaningful way with young people from babies to age fourteen. For 365 days—or with a leap year 366—I provide a reli- able guide to the classics and to new books on their way to becoming classics. On March 12 I talk about Madeleine L’Engle’s road from rejection to her award-winning book A Wrinkle in Time; on June 11 I relate how Hans and Margret Rey saved Cu- rious George and themselves from the Nazis; on July 18 I focus on the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and its impact on Munro Leaf’s The Story of Ferdinand.
