Dr. Ashe graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and held honorary degrees from the Ordering Reproductions University of Pittsburgh, Stetson University, Florida Southern College and Mount Union College. -

Granville Brian Chetwynd-Staplyton How can I make you acquainted, I wonder? Above middle height, [5’8”] straight and square, fair hair, blue eyes, small fair moustache, a handsome face with a grave expression and altogether of an aristocratic appearance, and no wonder, for this family trace their descent from before the Conquest. He is rather quiet to outsiders but I don't find him so. I think we are something alike in some things, for instance most people think us both very reserved, excepting those who know us best. [Elizabeth Chetwynd- Stapylton to her sister March 1, 1886] It stretches one’s mind to believe that the mastermind behind the development of an English Colony near the western border of present Lake County, Florida in early 1882, was an ambitious, energetic 23 year-old English entrepreneur and a pioneer of dogged determination, Granville Brian Chetwynd-Stapylton. Granville Brian Chetwynd-Stapylton Stapylton, the youngest of four children, was born December 11, 1858, to William and Elizabeth Briscoe Tritton Chetwynd-Stapylton. His father was then the vicar of Old Malden Church, also known as St. John the Baptist Church, Surrey, London, England. Given the surname it should come as no surprise that this family is found in Burke's Peerage, Barontage and Knightage , a major royal, aristocratic and historical reference book. Granville descends from Sir Robert Constable, Knight of Flamborough (1423-1480). Although his father was an Oxford graduate Granville chose Haileybury College where, as an honor student, his interests were drama and geology. He is enumerated as a commercial clerk to a colonial broker in London in the 1881 English census along with his father, his sister Ella, a brother Frederick, a cook, a parlourmaid, a housemaid and a coachman. -

Many neighborhoods in our village have undergone extensive development and been transformed over the years. Even though we all understand new development is inevitable, new construction can be achieved in compliance with existing zoning regulations while still preserving the natural tree canopy of Coconut Grove. The subject property is a 6,499SF lot where a 1,205 SF single-family residence was built in 1956. Current work items on the City’s iBuild portal list 2 living units comprised of a 2 story 6000 SF structure in its place. The removal of mature specimen trees goes directly against the intent of Chapter 17 of the City’s Tree Protection Ordinance. In this particular case, a design that preserves the specimen trees and canopy of Coconut Grove in harmony with the future structure is attainable. We request a permit to remove trees, especially the specimen oak located on the property be denied and construction be performed strict compliance with City codes and ordinances. SECTION 2.1: ARCHITECTURAL STYLES BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY OF MIAMI Before the first European settlers set foot in South Florida; the Tequesta people inhabited this land. The Tequesta’s alongside other natives reached the astonishing number of 100,000 in population. Together they developed a complex society of living in communities that were planned and executed by early construction projects. The Tequesta people left behind a heritage in archaeological resources including the Miami Circle, Miami River Rapids, and the North Bank of the Miami River which all add greatly to the remarkable cultural patrimony of Miami. The first permanent European settlers arrived to South Florida in the early 19th century. Two families with Bahamian roots, received land grants from the Spanish Government when they owned Florida. These settlers were joined by Bahamian immigrants looking for employment, the Seminole Indians, and runaway slaves. They ferociously disputed the non-native absorption of Seminole lands in three Seminole Wars (1817-1818, 1835-1842, and 1855-1858). Few United States soldiers stayed after the end of the third and last Seminole War. It wasn’t until 1846 when South Florida was first surveyed the area flourished once the United States implemented the “Homestead Act” in 1862 which granted 160 acres of land to men willing to live on the land for at least five years. Important early residents included William Brickell and Julia Tuttle who brought the early Spanish grants. Together they convinced Henry Flagler to expand his rail line south to Miami. With the railroad, progress came to Miami and the first building boom occurred in 1900s to 1930s. -

Degree awarded June 2017 ii © 2017 Michael Sean Munger iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Michael Sean Munger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History June 2017 Title: Ten Years of Winter: The Cold Decade and Environmental Consciousness in the Early 19 th Century Two volcanic eruptions in 1809 and 1815 shrouded the earth in sulfur dioxide and triggered a series of weather and climate anomalies manifesting themselves between 1810 and 1819, a period that scientists have termed the “Cold Decade.” People who lived during the Cold Decade appreciated its anomalies through direct experience, and they employed a number of cognitive and analytical tools to try to construct the environmental worlds in which they lived. Environmental consciousness in the early 19 th century commonly operated on two interrelated layers.
