Open clusters are an important tool for studying the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk. Metallicity estimates are available for about ten percent of the currently known open clusters. These metallicities are based on widely differing methods, however, which introduces unknown systematic effects. Aims. In a series of three papers, we investigate the current status of published metallicities for open clusters that were derived from a variety of photometric and spectroscopic methods. The current article focuses on spectroscopic methods. The aim is to compile a comprehensive set of clusters with the most reliable metallicities from high-resolution spectroscopic studies. This set of metallicities will be the basis for a calibration of metallicities from different methods. Methods. The literature was searched for [Fe/H] estimates of individual member stars of open clusters based on the analysis of high-resolution spectra. For comparison, we also compiled [Fe/H] estimates based on spectra with low and intermediate resolution. -

The open clusters NGC 2323 and NGC 2539 have been analysed using CCD UBV(RI)KC photo- metric data, observed at the San Pedro Martir´ Observatory. Cluster memberships have been determined with the proper motion and parallax measures from the GaiaDR2 astrometric data release. Photometric metal and heavy element abundances have been obtained as ([M=H]; Z) = (−0:10; 0:012) (NGC 2323) and (−0:31; 0:007) (NGC 2539), from the δ(U–B) technique in the two colour diagrams, which are used to select the appropriate PARSEC isochrones. The estimated reddening of NGC 2323 is E(B-V)=0.23±0.04 using 11 early type stars. For NGC 2539, we find E(B-V)= 0.02±0.06. For (B–V) colour, distance moduli and distances for NGC 2323 and NGC 2539 are de- rived as (V0–MV, d (pc)) = (10.00±0.10, 1000±50) and (V0–MV, d (pc)) = (10.00±0.04, 1000±20), respectively. The median GaiaDR2 distance d=1000±140 pc ($=0.998±0.136 mas) for the likely members of NGC 2323 is in concordance with its four colour photometric distances 910–1000 pc. -

He described it as 'A nebulous star, fairly bright and composed of many stars'. Charles Messier, who cataloged it on June 3, 1764, and Johann Bode couldn't make this out and described it as 'nebula without stars,' so that it remained to William Herschel in 1783 to resolve this fine star cluster. M15 was the first globular cluster in which a planetary nebula, Pease 1 or K 648 ("K" for "Kuster"), could be identified (Pease 1928, on photographic plates taken at Mt. Wilson in 1927). M15 can be found extremely easily: First find the 2nd magnitude star Epsilon Pegasi, and Theta Pegasi SE of it. Follow the line from Theta over Epsilon and find M15 3 1/2 deg W and 2 1/4 deg N of Epsilon. A 6th magnitude star is about 20' away to the East; another one of magnitude 7.5 is about 5' to the NNE. With its apparent visual brightness of magnitude 6.2, M15 is about at the limit of visibility for the naked eye under very good conditions. The slightest optical aid, opera glass or small binoculars, reveals it as a round nebulous object. It appears as a round mottled nebula in 4-inch telescopes, with at best the very brightest stars visible, but otherwise unresolved in a fine star field. Be sure to catch & log M15 this month! A Basic Requirement for Studying the Heavens Is Determining Where In
Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short). -

This month I actually have a story EPHEMERALS to tell, instead of just random ramblings. As most august 2012 of you know I went to the Astronomical League Conference (ALCon) in Chicago at the beginning of July with my grandmother. It was great. Not quite 08/24, 7:00 pm as good as last year, seeing as I had to pay for it Night Hike and they didn’t give me a check and a plaque this Northwest River Park year (last year I won the Horkheimer Youth award, which paid for my trip), but it was still a lot of fun, and very educational. I met a lot of cool 08/24, 8:00 pm people and definitely learned something. The Garden Stars whole trip was a big story, but a few events stand Norfolk Botanical Gardens out the most in my memory, and they’re all connected to some extent. 08/28, 7:00 pm Boardwalk Astronomy It all started on the day we got there. ALCon is Near 24th St Stage an annual four day conference usually in the VA Beach Oceanfront beginning of July. This year, the day we got there was July fourth. After checking in, taking a nap and 09/06, 7:30 pm dining, we decided to participate in the observing BBAA Monthly Meeting event outside the hotel. It was in a parking lot with lights, and fireworks, but there was a large moon TCC Campus and Saturn was up, so we went for it. -
