Television Programs to improve an English Learner’s fluency It is important for children to begin their journey as learners of the English language in the most fun, but simultaneously educational, way. For children under the age of 7: These English TV programs will really help with your child’s fluency and are both age and level appropriate. Most of them can be found on either Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Cartoon Network, Jetix, Disney XD, or Netflix. As always, we encourage that you use this list at your own discretion. Most of these shows can be found on the Disney Channel, Netflix, Jetix, and other various streaming websites online. Please keep in mind that every child is different, and the goal is to get them to enjoy their use of English in their day-to-day life. So, communicate with your child, research a show and choose together something that they will enjoy. This list reflects the different personalities, interests, and ages of our students, and although not every title on here will be suitable for every student, we are certain everyone will find a few of interest. 1. The established consensus in 1964: encourage immigrant children to assimilate as soon as possible. For the scholarship underlying this consensus, see Milton Gordon’s monograph Assimilation in American Life: the role of race, religion, and national origins, New York: Oxford University Press, 1964. Because of this long-held consensus, the more recent finding that immigrant children now do better than American-born children is regarded as evidence of a “paradox.” Scroll to the bottom of this document for citations documenting the immigrant paradox. (It does not include any children’s output on other commercial generalist non-terrestrial channels, such as GMTV,ABC1, Sky One.) • This output analysis examines the genre range within children’s programming and looks at how this range has changed since 2003. It is based on the BARB Children’s genre classification only and uses the BARB subgenres of Children’s Drama, Factual, Cartoons, Light entertainment/quizzes, Pre-school and Miscellaneous. • It is important to note that the BARB genre classifications have some drawbacks: – All programme output that is targeted at children is not classified as Children’s within BARB.
