Entrenched views can take decades to overturn, sometimes requiring the changing of the guard to a more enlightened generation before true impartiality can be embedded – and even then it is clear that bias has a long and durable tail. But we are heading in the right direction. Half a century ago ingrained discrimination on gender and ethnic grounds was common. Sadly elements still exist, but progress is undeniable. What is more is the recognition of prejudices that in the past ran so deep they were not even recognised – for example ageism, bias against those with disabilities and against those who can’t simply be classified as heterosexual. Now the awareness and the language around such issues means minorities are no longer being ignored or repressed. Tackling such issues is undeniably ‘the right thing to do’, but now there is a different imperative driving change. The technology sector is suffering from a skills shortage – often quoted as the most important factor limiting a company’s growth. So far from being a discarded or ignored chunk of a potential workforce, this huge swathe of diverse people represents a real opportunity for smart companies to develop the pool of talent they so badly need. Some companies have realised this, developing programmes to create inclusive workforces and discovering that their businesses have become happier, more unified and more successful as a result.

Abstract This doctorate consists of two parts: a novel Torn and the exegesis: Writing the migrant story: nostalgia, identity and belonging. The novel and theoretical exegesis are intended to complement each other in capturing the 20th century Lithuanian historical and political circumstances that led to Lithuanian emigration to Australia. In my novel and exegesis, my intention has been to explore how the experiences of Lithuanian refugees and migrants differ, especially in relation to nostalgia, identity and belonging, depending on the time and circumstances of their arrival in Australia. Lithuanians came to Australia from the same place geographically, but from a different place in terms of history and politics. My novel is a creative representation of the Lithuanian migrants’ experience in the diaspora. It is set in the 1980s and 90s when the political, socio-economic and cultural environment radically shifted under Mikhail Gorbachev’s policy of perestroika (restructure). Daina, a theatre producer from Soviet Lithuania, comes to Australia to look after her great-uncle, Algis. As a postwar Lithuanian refugee, settled here since the 1940s, Algis has strong views about his Soviet-occupied homeland and its people. He lets Daina know that he hates anything associated with Russia and Russians who, in his opinion, were responsible for killings and deportations of Lithuanians during the war.

Introduction After nine Writers’ Calendars, of sorts, I thought I would do a collection with a slight difference. These are little snippets from here and there around the world, mostly from places I haven’t been. I thought it would be a way to travel at virtually no cost to me and might bring me into contact with some fascinating places and, with luck, some equally fascinating moments in history. Some of the places, as you will discover, aren’t places to stay and drink the water but I did want a sense of variety. It is still a writers’ calendar but I have confined my chosen pieces from various writers to pieces which have a connection to PLACE … And I have usually given priority to writers whose writing imparts a strong sense of PLACE … They don’t really need any introducing so hop aboard the magic carpet —ooops! The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant and serious impact on the lives of individuals across the world, especially the lives of people on the autism spectrum and their families. To investigate and understand the ways in which autistic people have been affected by COVID- 19, Autism-Europe conducted an online survey from March 23rd to June 15th, 2020. The survey aimed at assessing the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on the daily lives of autistic people and their families, including their access to support services, education, employment and healthcare, etc. This report outlines the findings of the survey, as well as incorporates media reports and findings from our member’s associations and academia, to bring awareness to the experiences and challenges of autistic people and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
