Huber* Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig, Adenauerallee 160, 53113 Bonn, Germany (Received 7 June 2004; revised 25 November 2004; accepted 29 November 2004) ABSTRACT The renaissance of interest in sexual selection during the last decades has fuelled an extraordinary increase of scientific papers on the subject in spiders. Research has focused both on the process of sexual selection itself, for example on the signals and various modalities involved, and on the patterns, that is the outcome of mate choice and competition depending on certain parameters. Sexual selection has most clearly been demonstrated in cases involving visual and acoustical signals but most spiders are myopic and mute, relying rather on vibrations, chemical and tactile stimuli. This review argues that research has been biased towards modalities that are relatively easily accessible to the human observer. Circumstantial and comparative evidence indicates that sexual selection working via substrate-borne vibrations and tactile as well as chemical stimuli may be common and widespread in spiders. Pattern-oriented research has focused on several phenomena for which spiders offer excellent model objects, like sexual size dimorphism, nuptial feeding, sexual cannibalism, and sperm competition. The accumulating evidence argues for a highly complex set of explanations for seemingly uniform patterns like size dimorphism and sexual cannibalism. Sexual selection appears involved as well as natural selection and mechanisms that are adaptive in other contexts only. Sperm competition has resulted in a plethora of morpho- logical and behavioural adaptations, and simplistic models like those linking reproductive morphology with behaviour and sperm priority patterns in a straightforward way are being replaced by complex models involving an array of parameters. -

(2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -

Trichocyclus septentrionalis sp.nov. was collected in various caves in North West Cape, northern Western Australia; it does not show troglobitic features in its morphology and was also fOWld outside caves. The genus Trichocyclus is diagnosed and differences with related genera are indicated. The type species, T. nigropunctaJus Simon, 1908, is redescribed. An identification key to all pholcid genera ofAustralia is presented. INTRODUCTION Scientific exploration ofthe Australian cavefauna has been relatively recent. Such explorations have revealed a rich spider fauna associated with caves in many parts ofsouthern Australia (Gray 1973a,b; Main 1976) and more recently in Chillagoe caves and Undara lava tubes. A specialised cave spider fauna was recorded and partly described by Main (1969), Gray (1973a) and Main and Gray (1985). Cavesin limestonesofdifferentgeologicalages in Western Australiaharbourspiders (Watson, et al. 1990). In recent years the Western Australian Museum has conducted extensive surveys of caves in the Cape Range, North West Cape, Western Australia (Humphreys 1991). Nevertheless muchofthe cavespiderfauna ofAustraliaremains undescribed. Thepholcid spiders collected in North West Cape belong to one species only. They do not exhibit any morphological cave-adaptations such as reduction of eye size or pigmentation; the environment may however have effected a lengthening of the legs. Diversity of pholcid spiders (Araneae: Pholcidae) in selected areas of Southeastern Mindanao, Philippines Mae A. Responte, Olga M. Pholcidae is one of the species-rich spider families. However, pholcid spiders are poorly studied in Southeast Asian countries like the Philippines. In this study, selected areas of southeastern Mindanao, Philippines were surveyed in order to determine the pholcid fauna in the area. Pholcids were collected using a combination of aerial-hand searching and ground-hand searching methods. Nonparametric richness estimators were used to estimate the species richness of the sampling area using EstimateS version 9.0 software. In addition, biodiversity and similarity indices were calculated using Paleontological Statistics Software Package (PAST) version 2.17c. Seventeen species of pholcid spiders were documented in which 88% of the samples collected were probably new species. Based on richness estimates computed, the true species richness in the surveyed areas might exceed 37 species and probably much more. The highest species diversity among the six sampling areas was documented in Mount Hamiguitan Wildlife Sanctuary located at San Isidro, Davao Oriental. However, Epol falls in Marilog District seems to be the distinct sampling area among the six sites surveyed because of the unique species found in the area. The results of this study clearly showed that the diversity of pholcid spiders is much higher in the country than the 13 species that were previously documented.
